Dark Souls Knight Artorias' Armour Historical Evaluation

Me playing dark souls 3
Dark Souls III is the latest game in the Dark Souls universe. Developed by FROMSOFTWARE, published by Namco Bandai.
It is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
Set in the Kingdom of Lothric, the player is tasked to survive an apocalypse brought about by the ongoing conflict between the age of fire and those branded with the Dark Sign as with previous iterations of the series. To survive this event the player character must face the Lords of Cinder, previous heroes who linked the fire, as the cycle of Light and Dark continues and no matter what you do, darkness will return and repeat itself forever.

I think an important thing to note with Artorias' armor, and _especially_ Ornstein's is that it was intended to aid in fighting dragons. For example, Ornstein's armor is very spiky and serrated (almost like a porcupine), which would be a huge disadvantage against any human sized opponent as it would catch blades and generally be a nuisance to deal with, but when you consider that the primary enemy that his armor was intended to defend against would have had biting as one of it's fundamental attacks... you get the picture. Similarly with Artorias, the mail skirt might be there less to directly defend against cutting or stabbing attacks, but to cushion large, high inertia blows from a dragon or a drake. ... or maybe I'm reading too far into it and the designers just thought a long hauberk looked cool. Actually, that's probably it.

emlmm88 late answer but, actually, artorias, although one of gwyn’s knights, was part of the half with ciaran that seem more fit to tackle human threats, you can see this in his lack of any lightning magic and his use of a shield(you don’t see it cause he broke his arm) and greatsword

Ornstein is dragon slayer, but arthorias is abbys walker... His enemy is not dragon, but the abbys monster... And i think abbys monster is more humanoid form than dragonoid... Even the abbys boss (i forgot his name) is more monster like than dragon like... More important thing (spoiler alert) arthorias failed on his task to battle the abbys... He actualy use shield on his left arm... But when battle the abbys, his left arm broken, and arthorias decide to use his shield to cast magic to protect his companion Sif... And succumb to the abbys... That is why when you fight arthorias, his left hand is daggling and only use his right hand... More spoiler and explaination on dark souls or arthorias can be found in vaatyvidya channel...

Artorias fought primarily humanoid enemies, the Darkwraiths, he had dealt with the abyss before but never dealt with the dark beasts of Oolacile, you also have to remember that his armour is damaged, and we can never see what it really looked like.

Since DS2 featured powerstances and DS3 changed to a weapon art system there are slight differences. The weapon art (stance) for the artorias greatsword can be executed from both hands in DS3 with the left trigger and followed up with right button or trigger into their respective special moves. The power stance weapon moveset in DS2 was unique on its own but not particularly relevant to the topic at hand, since artorias didnt ever dual wield power stanced his own weapon which there only was one of in the first place. I just remembered that in DS1 there were several "Artorias" swords, only one of them features the characteristic summersault spin moves. Not either of the two "Artorias" swords (divine or cursed), but the Abyss greatsword (the former 2 you get from the soul of Sif, the later you get from Artorias in the DLC himself). So wether the distinct moveset is something Artorias picked up after he was swallowed by the abyss, something that came about from his corruption or simply a design choice by the dev team is up for someone else to decide. It is an interesting topic to nerdsplore.

One thing that's good about artorias' armor is internal consistency - if you look closely, while it's ornamented, covered in that blue scarf/cape and has a custom made helmet, the armor itself is not much different from the standard armor of knights of anor londo

I mean, have you SEEEEN how long his reach with that sword is? Plus his combat style appears to be focused around a mixture of fast charges, fast spinning slashes, and gravity defying flips. I seriously doubt that the Abyss has the ability to grant knights skill in acrobatics.

To be fair, he would've used his massive shield for protection until he closed the gap or was clear from the threat of ranged attacks. The reason he wasn't an even more formidable boss was because his arm was crippled and his shield left behind to protect Sif from the abyss (cuz magic).

I know this is a four year old comment, but I like Dark souls and for anyone reading the comments section, Artorias primarily fought the Abyss, and was more equipped to fight Darkwraiths, which worked really well until they realized that you can’t stop the Abyss, and they flooded New Londo. After the Abyss showed up in Oolacile he was sent to combat it there, ( him and his wolf Sif ) however the threat there was different, it was more primeval man, simply corrupt. Artorias’ main hand was his left hand, when it broke he decided to defend Sif with his blessed shield and took up his sword in his right hand, his offhand, which explains his style of fighting as not only being corrupt by the Abyss, but also because he isn’t fighting with his main hand.

+evan shankar From what I understand, it was the development of muskets specifically that made plate armor obsolete. Previous handheld firearms were not sufficiently powerful to penetrate plate armor, especially when the breastplates started being thickened at the expense of armor at the extremities.

@thatasianguy99 Armor did continue to evolve, just in different ways, such as the tank, kevlar, bullet proof vests, etc. The weapon technology always leads the armor technology, because you first need to have the problem before you can defend against the problem.

I understand. And you're right, armor is developed in response to a threat. So I guess I should revise my question to ask how both weapons and armor would evolve without firearms around. Would the rest of the world adopt plate armor? What would be done to get past the problem of plate armor and how would armor evolve in response to this? It's very hypothetical but I'm curious as to what people like Metatron think about something like this.

I really enjoy your critiques of armor from video games. Many other youtubers are far too critical because they arent perfectly accurate to history. Fantasy and video games most of the time arent real. The fact that they arent real is what draws many people, the same way fantasy fiction does as a genre. I enjoy your videos because even though they arent historically accurate (and i dont expect them to) you still appreciate the creations, while still noticing the details that were inspired by history. Appreciate history and enjoy the fantasy. Great videos.

Ive always been the thief and id say it very much suits the games. you're some petty thief that died, and through luck (good or bad) received a curse and was forced to go on a long trial. Slowly you begin to abandon your shadowy ways and progress from the dark and ragged leathers and cloths to plate, which in a way symbolizes him redeeming the sins which he committed in life and starting down a more honorable path to save the world, when at the start he was only going through the motions because he had no choice. In DS2 i settled for the wanderer but i hated it in general as the only bad souls game, so i dont really count that.

Meh, starting class basically only dictates your limitations on gear and spells (mostly spells) for the first few hours of the game. Almost all basic forms of weapons can be gotten rather easily. And if you go for a thief or the master key, you can pull some BS and go trolling around and get stuff like the grass crest shield, and the elite knight set if you really want. Course I usually go for the elite knight set, grass crest shield, and astora straight sword for a lot of the early game.

Yes the longer mail on the bottom isn't fitting with the rest of the armor's time period, however! It might be there for specific functional purposes. His chest plate(s) gives it away as it's center bump is set so high up an attack coming down from above wouldn't deflect off as well as a normal shaped chest plate, but attacks from below are even further deflected away. His moveset also hints at the reason for the skirt as he does spinning vertical slams often and low horizontal sweeps. He fights against and has armor designed for fighting shorter than himself foes. He needs the longer skirt of mail as the average foe he fights will swing lower on his legs than a knight in the real world so it's worth the extra weight even if it is using an older design.

Marcus Smith this makes sense, and considering the height of all of Gwyn's knights (bar Ciaran) you can see that they were hulks of muscle, whereas the humans of the world (see the Balder Knights) were far more realistic - this lends claim to the idea that Artorias would fight shorter foes; and actually helps explain why his shield is so long, despite his fighting style.

Hey Metatron, awesome video once again! If I may, I want to add something to your analysis, it is the "horse mane" (don't know if it's the good english translation but in french this is called "crin de cheval") on Artorias's helmet. It actually is used for protection because you can't cut through it so it protect your neck (except for blunt trauma ofc). It's flexible and light so it won't disturb the cavalryman movements. You can see it today on the french 'gardes républicains' helms (wich look like a little to artorias helm). Keep going man, I wish you good times for your next videos.

Artorias' armor is actually heavily influenced by Guts' Berserker armor in the manga, "Berserk". It's a little wink from the creators of dark souls to fans of the manga, and it's not the only one. There are many more things that are nods and references to Berserk, and so I think it's worthy of acknowledging that little point when doing a historical evaluation of an armor set like Artorias'. Great video, though! Thoroughly enjoyable.

About the usage of the set on the DS's lore: Artorias was mainly tasked to hunt and exterminate any signs of Dark infestation and expansions of the Abyss over Lordran. Basically these can't be "fought" in any conventional way, so all he can do to contain it, apparently, is to eliminate every infected life form and it's hinted that sometimes entire cities for precaution if there was Dark spreading nearby. Based on this, he was pretty tanky (greatshield + a magical ring for extra poise) and used a very large "greatsword" (the definition of greatsword in DS is a bit strange, but basically this one doesn't look like any real greatsword and it's too large to be used as a longsword) and was strong enough to use both effectively. The creatures faced and that he would most likely need to protect himself were regular life forms turned into insane beasts (not-that-large compared to some creatures of DS's universe) and that attacked like an animal in rage, so he would need an armor resistant to heavy punches (many enemies in Oolacile attack with blunt impact), some claw like attacks (no need to even worry about armor penetration, but slashes could be dangerous if using shit armor) and regular weapons used by creatures that don't think; the shield is pretty good for protecting from the punches, the claw thing is not a real problem since he has a large sword, a shield and good armor and the weapons won't do anything against a shield that large. The only "originated from Dark" enemies I can think would be the locusts (but these can't do shit but eat people), that are just very large orthoptera insects with disturbing white humanoid faces, and Darkwraiths (I'm not sure if all of these came from New Londo or if they existed before), that would be the only problem, I think (and it seems that they sometimes came after the knights with the duty of guarding the Abyss, since they appear in Farron Keep coming in the direction of the Abyss Watchers). Sorry about the giant text.

Artoria's armor is basically a custom version of the silver knight armor, you can see it in its overall design, and specially on the arms. the thing that makes it looks diferent are the helmet, again has hints of the SK, but look more like a commander version, the mantle over its shoulder and of course, the fact that its corroded by the abyss.

One thing to keep in mind is that Artorias armor is corroded by the Abyss, therefore, the actual non-corroded armor would be thicker. Also the scarf was a cape.

  • @patrickmusulin7892

I believe the way Artorias's helmet's and mail skirt's shapes are the way they are is because. Artorias's style of fighting uses the weight of his weapon and the slashing movements to do damage. He takes a very low posture with his legs down for sharp mobility and looks that the skirt covers his legs when he is lower and the helmet deflects attacks from the top, allowing him to thrust or heavy sweep. (All assuming) But in the boss fight he does stab and slash and slam.

To be honest, the Artorias Knight set can be purchased in Dark Souls 3 after you beat Oceiros and go into a sort of 'past' version of the area you start off in. It can be purchased by the handmaiden there among some of the other really valuable items you can find.

You know, thinking about the utility of armor, having an open face on your helmet seems like a good way to go in these games. The world of Drangleic, Lordran... wherever the curse strikes, are all incredibly dangerous. There are traps everywhere, everything is trying to kill you, and even things that you expect to be innocuous could attack at a moment's notice. Besides, these characters are going to be walking around the world in armor all the time - it would make a lot of sense to have armor that more easily allowed you to breathe, as well as see what's around you. Overall, an interesting thing to pick up on from just the helmet of a piece of armor.
