Worst part is both Magneto and Mystique literally have nothing to do with the actual Dark Phoenix story, so having those two reluctant actors in it was pointless.

Fassbender, reluctant? He’s been the best thing in these soft reboot films. I’ve not seen Dark Phoenix, but if he doesn’t seem to care, I reckon that’s because they gave him a shit plot, not because he doesn’t care.

Archerpool Well reluctant isn’t really a jab at him or JLaw - you’re right he is the best part, so him being reluctant to take part in a badly written/directed film that might reflect badly on him is perfectly understandable. I’m just pointing out that they were jammed into a storyline that could have been cleaner without them. (Haven’t seen the movie either, just going off this review, watching it tonight)

Phoenix comes before Dark Phoenix you could make a trilogy of the whole story. Anything can work they gotta make it work. Regardless X-Men is about social issues, they aren't the Avengers. Dark Phoenix has nothing to do with the mutant struggle, nor have the writers made it fit that narrative.

It honestly should be something they LEAD UP TO. It's be amaziiiiing!! First phase would be just introducing X-Men characters then leads to reg. Phoenix and then phase 2 leads to dark Phoenix. Phase 3 would be...idk????😱😱😱😱😱

Even when Marvel Studios gets to that story, they would already set up all the characters including Jean Grey from the ground up. That way, it doesn't feel forced or rushed unlike both X-Men: The Last Stand and Dark Phoenix.

I mean I wouldn't say SHE'S the one using the film's for a paycheck because that just paints her as selfish. As much as she doesn't care to be in these films, she's still contractually obligated to do them. At that point, for her the paycheck is the only thing TO look forward to.

I firmly believe that Fox should’ve built up to DOFP being the last foX-Men film instead of DARK PHOENIX. Spend a couple movies building up the young cast and them unite them with the original, throw in Deadpool and Domino and Cable, introduce X-23 as the new Wolverine. It could’ve been their ENDGAME. Have this franchise go out with a bang rather than the whimper we’re getting. But that would’ve required Fox having actual vision and ability to think long-term

This review reminded me of exactly what I didn't like about the Fox X-men movie line. They always seemed unsure of either to play them as this inexperienced team of persecuted people with powers; or an established/experienced super hero team. They didn't set up this transition well at all and it would shift between this back and forth in between movies; seemed very jarring. I hope that when Disney decides to do it; aside from having them look like the comics (costume design wise; no more excuses for Wolverine to not have his costume), I hope we are introduced to them as a team that has a lot of experience and who does not care if they are accepted by the masses. Having the multiverse plot device could help in the regard; but I seriously don't want to start from 0 with the X-men. I want to start with them at their best.

People forget these aren't adaptations from novels or stage plays, these are comics. Comic books have multiple variations of characters, realities, stories, etc. so the films don't have to stay true to one source either, they're their own comic book universe as well.

@@slibiz I totally agree that they dont have to follow the comics; except that when they do; they blatantly try to do so in a weak manner within these movies. I mean, I was never a Cyclops fan; but his character in the movies is similar to a plank of wood. Storm(though played by a decent actress); was never really fleshed out either. Outside of the Professor X, Beast, Wolverine and a few others; most of the characters felt like weak cosplayers, pretending to be the characters; rather than actually being them. Compare this to the portrayal of any of the Avangers from the movies and you can see what I'm talking about.

I agree with you guys on both the dialogue and the lack of character development for the younger characters. I just wanted to add that, besides the relationship between Scott and Jean, another relationship that was left out of these movies, which was in the comics, was the friendship between Jean and Storm. I believe, before Jean died, the two had become best friends. We don't see any inkling of that in this movie, besides that one throw away line by Storm, when she told Scott that Jean wasn't the same person any longer. That just felt like another reason why this film felt rushed. And I also almost fell asleep several times in the second half of the film. Probably because, like the actors, I was already emotionally checked-out of the film at that point.

  • @rogersmith3620

Jean wasn't possessed. That is just a common misconception about the comics. Jean was suffering from PTSD. So Jean had more agency and development in the movie than it was given credit for. Also, Jean didn't die in the movie. She transformed into the Phoenix at the end of the film and is apparently going to appear in the upcoming Deadpool/Wolverine. She was also shown to be alive at the end of Days of Future Past.

You'd think HANK would be (written to be) ALL OVER THAT considering his expertise. If they had him analyzing her like Reed Richards from the FF4 would, it would make sense, and would've made the movie better since it fits the character. They could have played it like John Carpenter's 'The Thing', where Hank sees activity in her cells but can only see/examine to a point due to our limited technology but knows it's not good and then it creates an unease among everyone, then trust issues occur with Scott siding with Jean of course, Xavier in the middle and the rest split in factions. So many missed opportunities.

In 1975, eight-year-old Jean Grey inadvertently uses her telekinesis to cause a car accident that kills her parents. Shortly afterwards, Professor Charles Xavier takes her to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where he mentally blocks the accident from her memories and helps her hone her psychic abilities. In 1992, the X-Men respond to a distress signal from the space shuttle Endeavour, which is critically damaged by a solar flare. While the X-Men save all of the astronauts, Jean absorbs the solar flare in her body. Her psychic powers are greatly amplified as a result. At the same time, the mental block placed by Xavier is destroyed and she travels to Red Hook after discovering that her father is still alive. The X-Men attempt to take Jean home, but she accidentally kills Raven Darkhölme and several policemen before flying away. Jean travels to Erik Lehnsherr's island of mutant refugees to seek assistance in controlling her powers, but is turned away by Erik after she engages in combat with U.S. military forces tasked with her arrest. Jean meets Vuk, the leader of a shape-shifting alien race known as the D'Bari, who explains to her that she possesses the Phoenix Force, which wiped out the D'Baris' home planet years ago. Meanwhile, Hank McCoy, who feels betrayed by Xavier's manipulation of Jean's memories, allies with Erik and his mutant refugees to bring down Grey in New York City. The X-Men and Erik's faction battle each other before Erik confronts Jean, only to be overpowered by her new abilities. Xavier and Scott Summers stop Vuk from fully absorbing the Phoenix Force from Jean before both mutant factions are captured by the U.S. government and placed in a train towards a secret facility. The train is attacked by Vuk and her D'Bari forces. When the soldiers are overpowered by the shape-shifters, the mutants are freed from their restraints to combat the threat. Vuk once again attempts to drain Jean of the Phoenix Force, but Jean unleashes her full potential and kills Vuk before disappearing into outer space. In the aftermath of the incident, the school is renamed Jean Grey's School for Gifted Youngsters, with Hank as the new dean. In Paris, Erik reunites with Xavier to play a game of chess. As they start to play, a flaming Phoenix appears in the sky.

Mystique to me in the cartoons & comics has always been a antihero/villian & mainly a side character. I hate how much screen time the character has gotten in these movies. Where the F is Gambit?? Why wasn't he introduced & developed a romance with Rogue? Another thing, Anna Paquin was highly miscast as Rogue. Should've been someone with more sass like Ashley Judd or Faith Hill or somethin.

Actually, they were kinda wrong since this is suppose to be an origin story. This is pretty much what Jean's backstory was like in the comics. Also, the Dark Phoenix Saga was not about heel turn. That is common misconception. In the comics, Jean became a drug addict and killed people by ACCIDENT.

@@Anthonycheesman33 I really like "parts" of X2 as an avid X-Men fan, but it is indeed a bit overrated. There's some weak writing in there and some even weaker character development too. The characterization is amazingly flat. Out of the entire cast, maybe three have enough personality to even qualify as characters: Professor X, Magneto, and Nightcrawler. Even Wolverine, who’s basically the star of the show, has essentially nothing going on upstairs. He has alf-baked fragments of an arc.

Just saw IT & for me it was another case of going in w/ 0-Low expectations & comin out like, well that wasn’t god awful, wasn’t a great film by any means but I wasn’t bored or angry through it like I thought I’d be. If it was on TV I’d watch a bit of it. Rental film imo. Honestly looking at some reviews it just seems Hyperbolic like usual & a few already had their torch and pitchforks ready for any film that’s not MCU Quality and I can think of MANY super hero films who deserve that score instead of this tbh, Again my opinion not a Great film at all but not a film that had me ripping my hair out from anger or getting anxiously bored.
