Dana 60 Carrier Install

How to install a carrier in a Dana 60 axle. Please keep in mind I did NOT regear. I used my existing ring, pinion, and shims. This made the install a lot easier than a full regear. Hey buddy I just ran across your videos & I thought they were pretty good informative videos!! I did my Dana 60 front axel & 14 bolt full floater axels about 10 years ago!! I also ended up changing my gears from 4.10 to 4.56 & also In stalled ARB air lockers in both my axels!! I am so glad that I spent the extra on the air lockers for sure!! I haven’t been happier & absolutely no issues with anything!! The one thing that I did was I ended up building my own case spreader for doing the front Dana 60!! It definitely made it a breeze reinstalling the ring gear!! When I was all done with the build since it was my first time ever building a Dana 60 I took it to an axel shop to have them just double check everything to make sure I had everything just right!! I even took my case spreader that I had built my self up with me!! When they told me to just back my truck in the shop so they could unload it they had asked me what all the extra pieces of steel that I had was for I told them it was my case spreader!! They were like we have been trying to get one for several years & wanted to no wear I had gotten it from!! I told them that I had spent about 8 hours building it myself & that it worked so well!! They ended up telling the owner of the company & he had called me after I had left asking me if I would be willing to sell it to them?? I was like y do you guys want to buy it?? He told me that the way they have been doing it for years is pulling the whole front axels so they could put it in a hydraulic press to spread the case & reinstall the Carrier!! He said it would save them around 8 hours of pulling the axels completely & then having to reinstall the axel back in the vehicle!! I told him that it wasn’t to hard to build it just took about a full day to build it!! He then said well think about it & when you come back to get your axels to have a price & he would have cash for me!! I went back about a week later to get my axels & the owner came out & asked me if I would be willing to work for him!! He said that everything I did to my axels was top notch & he could tell that I cared about how my stuff was done!! He said you didn’t need to bring your axels in my guys spent mabe 30 to 45 minutes checking your axels & every thing was within specks & on the tight side so that as the new components wear in the specks should loosen up just enough so that the specks would be right in the middle where he always likes to run stuff & has had little to no issues with all the other axels they had done over the past 50 years they have been building axels!! He then asked me what I would take for the axel spreaders?? I had to tell him that I have more then a dozen Dana 60 axels & would be needing it for another build down the road!! I told him I could build another one sometime for him!! He then said it sure would help us out by saving us a bunch of time on doing the front Dana 60 rebuilds that they do!! After leaving I was thinking to my self that I really did do my first build pretty darn good & was pretty happy with it!! Love watching your videos & can’t weight to see more!!

Sounds like I could have used your help putting my axle back together! A case spreader would have been very helpful. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching.

Great job on all 3 videos on this project. Just about to put mine back together with new bearings (same carrier and pinion gears) so your timing couldn't have been better. Mine (like yours) had no carrier shims. Just out of curiosity, if your run-out was out of spec, how comfortable are you adding carrier shims where there wasn't any before?

My carrier did have shims, they were between the bearings and carrier. If the backlash was out of spec I would definitely add shims to get it within spec. If you end up needing shims you will probably have to order them, I had to. I needed pinion shims and when I asked at the parts store they looked at me like I was crazy. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you found the videos helpful. Good luck on putting your axle back together. I hope to have the next video up soon.

Hi, Would you add some extra detail about the lower adjustable king pins your dana 60 has. They now have these avail for the dana 60 for first gen dodges and some insight about them would be cool ! Thanks, Thumbs Up !

Thank you for the videos. My carrier went back in loose though it came out tight. Any idea what caused this? The end result so far is my rear end is coming back off the van and opened again.

What did you do to your carrier? The only reason for it to be loose as I'm sure you are aware is, it's not wide enough. Did you replace bearings? If so, maybe some shims were stuck to a bearing and maybe you missed them, one of the bearings could be out of spec, a bearing race could be out of spec, or just the wrong race. Thanks for watching! Let me know what you find out.

@@Offroadfarm1 thank you for your response. My belief from the get-go was the bearing race was out of spec since I've had troubles getting the correct parts on this vanbulance since day 1. The old races sat tighter in the housing but like an idiot, I tossed em with too much faith that I was done with em.

Do you put any lubricant on the bearing caps? Or install dry?

I pre-oiled the bearing and put a small amount of oil on the caps to help them slide in to position. Thanks for watching

A little bit of cussing and a lot of prying! I ended up using 2 pry bars. I leaned on the bottom one while using a hammer on the top one. After a little persuasion it finally came out. It was not easy. Thanks for watching.
