Reading the royals body language here is interesting. They immediately light up when they see it's Dame Edna. That "proper" exterior melts away with laughter and joy, then they are just 2 people having a great laugh, so much so, Charles points at Dame Edna because she is just so funny and he can't contain himself. For thirty seconds, they get to be real people, laughing with a large group of people in unison, and you just can't beat that

I think he got away with this because he was Australian. Lines would be harder to cross if you were brought up in the culture. I think the gentleman on the far right looks completely shocked at first. I guess the man on the left was in on it.

English Royals are all about presentation to the people (notice I didnt say public) but enjoying Dame Edna's presence and the greatest line ever said unto them truly worked to their benefit.

Didn't say a word until the punchline, and then got up and left. That was classic.

Oh this is too good! Typical Edna!! Hilarious and then you realize the punchline is even one step further!! Pure gold!!! Prince Charles was genuinely beside himself and loving it!

TO me this was the most hilarious of all when Dame Edna, sits in the Royal box with Prince Charles and Camilla. I know they both got the biggest surprise and kick out of it! I never saw Prince Charles and Camilla, laugh so hard!

I've seen him on stage. Actually, even before he utters a word. The outrageous appearance of Edna...is enough to bring down the house ...even before the show begins. He is hysterical.

It’s actually so wholesome to see an adult man, earnestly laugh with great enjoyment at something so humble

RIP Barry Humphries. There will never be another like you. Your portrayal of Dame Edna in particular bought me so much joy. You were a very funny man.

Barry Humphries funniest line with Price Charles was while he was in his Les Patterson guise. I think it was a PC birthday celebration. Appearing drunk via satellite, he had to wish PC a happy birthday from OZ. His first line was "Chuck, do you remember when we first met, because quite frankly I don't". Genius.

Just heard the sad 😞 news that Dame Edna aka Barry Humphries has passed away today after being in hospital for treatment RIP and Goodbye Possum and my condolences to his family at this sad time and I will always remember him in this now timeless sketch with the than Prince Charles and Camilla at the Royal Variety Show ❤️🌈🌹

This clip makes me love Dame Edna, of course, though I've always loved her. But more than that: it makes me love Prince Charles and Camilla much more, too. I've always admired them and this, to me, is proof they're good people. Adore Dame Edna? Then you're OK in my book.
