What I most love about this is the way Dame Judi & Sharon kick off their shoes, sit as though they're in their own sitting rooms, and just allow themselves to be entertained. Not only does it speak volumes for Dame Edna's abilities as a guest, but it's an extremely generous gesture from them to acknowledge the skill of that performance.

Barry Humphries is a genius - his performance here as Dame Edna is sublime and the interaction with Parky, Judi and Sharon is perfect. He knows how to 'read' his co-entertainers 'in the moment'. And to think that this interview was only 18 years ago - it would be banned today (as BH is today banned by certain institutions in Australia that bestowed him artistic awards, because he holds 'certain' views). That's how sad cancel culture has become. Comedy is the victim. Very few performers can come on and just hit the ground running like this, with a stream of brilliant dialogue. Robin Williams could do it. Billy Connolly could do it. As other people have said in the comments, Barry Humphries (her manager and mentor) is a genius who turned Dame Edna into what she became here. And let's pay tribute and give credit to Parky. Very few interviewers have the skill to feed the few minimal and essential questions to the guest, then stand back to let them do what they do so well. (And I've just realised that Barry Humphries was 70 at the time of this appearance.)

This is a combination of the greatest chat show host ever and the greatest chat show guest ever. Parky always did his homework meticulously but never had a script. He has interviewed all the greats of cinema, sport and entertainment for all his adult life and his technique is always 'the life and times of' his guests not the promotion of the latest film/book/tour etc.. Something which Woody Allen didn't take too kindly to. His lawyers tried but failed to prevent the broadcast of their interview ("The public perception is that you married your own daughter"). As has been said, Barry Humphries as Dame Edna was a comic genius - always outrageous but in a believable way, incredibly quick-witted, with an absolutely huge backstory and with exceptional comic timing and pace. There are two moments in this masterclass where Dame Edna almost corpses and has to pause, and they are before delivering the "He toyed with the priesthood" line because the audience were already in hysterics before he got there and after her gynaecologist, "Looked up this morning and he said to me" for the same reason. She starts her appearance by kissing Laurie Holloway (who's band also played on Dame Edna's shows) and saying that this was 'her' studio (from the Dame Edna Show/Experience - where top guests lined up week after week to be insulted) and ends by thanking "My special guest - Michael Parkinson!" - a full comic circle. Dame Judy and Sharon Osbourne represent us, the viewers in this, in being in frequent fits of uncontrollable laughter. Sharon puts up a fight at times but is then put down each time even more. "Two dames and a commoner. And there is no one commoner than you Sharon". We have lost a genius. Thank heavens for KZread.

Dame Edna is timeless. Speaking as an American, we need someone so innocently hilarious and whose comedy is brilliant! Dame Edna simply takes the audience along on a story of her life and adventures. The best part of her routine is that all of us know someone like her, and we can all relate to her life's adventures. She truly was peerless in the world of comedy, and I am disappointed that I never had the pleasure of watching her live on stage. I am so thankful that there are several videos here online where I get to enjoy her brand of humor. Thank You from all of us for posting this! It makes my day each time that I watch it. And Parkinson's reaction, along with Sharon and Dame Judy's, makes it all the better. Well done!

I knew nothing about the Dame, when a friend and I saw her on Broadway in the late 90's. One of the great theatrical experiences I have ever had! The brilliance of Barry Humphries is equal to any of the great comedians of the past; W.C. Fields comes to mind particularly. They both take us into a unique comedy reality of their own making. And, in addition, Barry does it with 4 major characters; and is witty just as himself. That we can watch and laugh over and over at the greats is another marvel. That is what I call true genius...

RIP to both Dame Edna & Sir Michael Parkinson. This is one of his funniest interviews. Another classic was with the GOAT Muhammed Ali 😇

I watch this “interview”, in which Edna hosts her mate Parky’s show, every few weeks-it never fails to deliver smiles, laughs and being bowled over by the wit, timing & professionalism of adorable Dame Edna!
