Yes, Gere's backtalk is futile. I'm afraid he carries a little too much anger around under that smile, and Dame Edna (not to mention the Dalai Lama) picked up on it. Real strength for him would have been to submit and enjoy the display of her unsinkable ego.

A true legend. ❤
Master class in responsive comedy. RG couldn’t keep up.
So funny, love her !!
When dame Edna began to make it big on international tv many of the American stars just couldn’t understand all the Australian turns of phrase and emphasis that dame Edna has in her voice but that’s part of her humour is the phrasing, her intonation and Aussie accent. The way she rolls her eyes or screws up her mouth. It’s very Australian. So barbed and cruel in many ways. Aussies love that. They don’t take anyone seriously, least of all “stars”, politicians or leaders. So the big American stars are often mystified as to why everyone else is laughing with the Dame and not bowing down to them, which they seem to imagine is what a chat show is about! Silly them!!!! American humour isn’t about the laconic or the ironic as British and Aussie humour is. Americans are more slapstick and not about self-deprecation. You’ll Notice some of the dame’s early shows in the states on chat shows with people like George Hamilton just went over his head as do her jokes here with Richard Gere. Lauren Bacall on the other hand (like Joan Rivers, both Jewish) had a better appreciation having come from a stronger tradition of theatre and a variety of performance styles since her early days. I think being Jewish as well gave her an appreciation for Humphries camp pantomime schtick. Joan collins, on other shows, being British , understood Humphries so she loved it all. But I find watching Gere dumbfounded here quite cringey. He’s so tortured and uncomfortable because Edna is pricking his big fat Hollywood ego endlessly. Which is the whole point of comedy. It’s a great masterclass in the differences between Britannic, Colonial and American humour to watch chat shows starring dame Edna and big American stars. In this case: old Hollywood in Bacall versus new Hollywood in Gere. Old Hollywood types were so much more exposed in their training to the traditions of musical theatre, slapstick, vaudeville, camp and pantomime to which Humphries belonged. So they “get it.” When you watch Humphries in his prime it makes you realise how pathetically untalented and overrated many big American stars actually are. They’re really just famous for their looks, sex appeal or their style. Most aren’t that funny or even that talented. Case in point with Gere, here. I think he took himself way too seriously.
@jochenstossberg5427
5 ай бұрын
Joan Collins is also Jewish. But what that's got to do with Edna is anyone's guess. Americans can be hilariously funny you just need to get out more. Richard Gere was uncomfortable because Barry Humphries, being Australian, was doing everything he could to make him feel uncomfortable. Australians like to do that with famous people. Under the circumstances I thought Richard Gere was amazingly cool. I don't think you get Edna at all by the way. You're confusing pantomime schtick with satire.
Dame Ed was amazing RIP

It took real guts to play that character how she did
