Now that was a powerful scene. Miss Ellie paying back her debt to Jock. Her very elegant and dignified way of signing the papers with the pen she chose and not the investor. Working together to solve a big crisis. This show was a true powerhouse from 1978 to around 1982 after which it slid downhill after Jock left

Yes the dining room scene was the acme of the show's success, combining as it did business with leisure, the matriarch and patriarch capitalists with a conscience, reining in J.R, before Sue Ellen got too big for her boots and before Victoria Principal's bulimia.

The Great Jim Davis passed of Cancer and "Jock" disappeared in a helicopter crash. Everybody says JR was and is the heart and soul of Dallas. This is incorrect. When Davis died it was gut wrenching to watch that episode on Jock's necessary departure. All the life left the show and JR was never the same. Worse; the writing became politically correct to just stupid, the Dream business notwithstanding . . Dynasty overtook it in the ratings and NOTHING could bring it back. I wonder if the producers, actors, writers, investors all just really understood how important Jim Davis/"Jock" was to Dallas.

I always like how at the end Jock walked ahead of Miss Ellie to open the office door for her. The man was tough as nails but always a gentleman.

Brilliant Analysis. The one thing that Donna Reed had going for her is that she was a brilliant dresser. Her and Jane Wyman (RIP) as Angela Channing were some of the best dressed ladies of their generation. Another admirable thing was that her former TV Son Paul Petersen has worked tirelessly with former Teen Idols who fall on hard times when their celebrity ends. I would love for Paul to talk and help Aaron Carter who really fell on hard times.

Good god what a great actress Cut to the core JR face after That was her son!!!!!!!!

Miss Ellie was the heart & soul of this family- and this show, at least for the first few seasons. She was the real wielder of strength of all the Ewings, with the most soft-spoken and gentle voice, she could swing the pendulum of the whole family. Her words of disappointment could burn terribly, and her wisdom could mend long-fought battles. Look at her sitting at JR's desk with the Ewing men in the background- as long as she was the matriarch of Southfork, she held considerable sway in family business. Even Jock gave way to her judgment on several occasions.

There aren't shows like this anymore. Great acting. The characters are classy, attractive, complicated, but yet earthy. J.R. one of the most ruthless and intriguing characters ever.

Miss Ellie was a total "bad ass". I love how she reached for the desk pen to sign the papers instead of taking Vaughn's pen. Subtle "middle finger" to the banker!

I don't understand why the family seem so surprised by Ms. Ellie's decision. It seemed like the sensible and easy thing to do. The alternative was losing Southfork.

Truly powerful people never have to raise their voice.

Great show. Every character was strong and unique in their own way.

It's My Life, Miss Ellie did "Save" JR's backside but Southfork meant everything to her. I would have loved for there to be a Movie about the early days of The Ewings who came to The US from Scotland.

Know what’s awesome about this? JR basically flipped this family’s life into turmoil. Jock’s depressed that he is about to lose everything he built, and Bobby wants to kill him. Yet, when it all came down to it, they were all working together to solve this, and then they met in the living room to work as a family. In the end, they were family and they had each other’s backs.

That part confused me.

@@reginaldjackson4173 You're right. JR was prone to irresponsible decisions when it came to Ewing Oil. As much as Gary loved Southfork, it carried too much baggage for him and was emotionally weak. Bobby was the adult of the brothers. In the Dallas reboot, Bobby really took on the role of Jock.

At 2:18 Miss Ellie states that Ewing Oil saved Southfork Ranch and now it is time that Southfork Ranch repays that debt to Ewing Oil.

When they first walked into the banker's office, JR looked like he was trying to come up with an explanation for Dr. Bellows.

Miss Ellie had such grace and moral strength.

Nor does it make you always able to buy your way out of any situation. JR learned this after deceiving BD Calhoun and his gang. He had finally met his match there and with the Justice Department.

At 1:19 Miss Ellie states that her father, Aaron Southworth, gave to her all of the rights under section 40.

I know that two actors / actresses can't play the same part the same, but in my opinion, Donna Reed didn't understand the character of Miss Ellie at all. Barbara Bel Geddes made Miss Ellie clever and proud co-owner of South Fork, while Donna Reed's portrayal of Miss Ellie was a elderly housewife, capable only of serving coffee by a maid/servant.

Apparently it had been in the Family for 200 Years. Chances are The Southworths came from England and The Ewings are of Scottish Background since it means Warriors. Remember how they stood facing Garrison when he came back after all of those years.

@@laminage Gary was named after his uncle. Gary's full name is Garrison Arthur Ewing. Miss Ellie always said that Gary was "a Southworth among Ewings". If Gary had been around when his namesake uncle reappeared, he would have found a kindred spirit in him and perhaps Garrison would have been the one besides Miss Ellie who would have understood Gary.

Yes Miss Ellie went against her beliefs in this, but let JR know it was not a great position he put her in. Jock didn't want Ellie to do this and later tried to sell the leases as he cared more about Miss Ellie than his company.

The last few moments should’ve played out like 1x04 - Miss Ellie just shaking her head disappointingly at JR as she walks out the door; Bobby looking at his big brother as if to say, “I hope you’re proud now;” JR not even trying to justify anything because he’s too guilty for what happened. Silence (and a damn good music score) speaks louder than any statement can.

i love how history was never neglected in Dallas..

J.R. Mortgaging Southfork was very low and very cruel to do that to his parents. If he would have been another set parents son, he would have really go it from them-they would have disowned him, thrown him out for good.

It was a mistake to have structured their assets such that Souhthfork would be closely tied to Ewing Oil, and that the company president would have the authority to unilaterally mortgage the ranch. Usually, rich families will keep business and personal assets separate so as to protect the personal assets from any liability against the company.

I've always wondered how this episode was originally intended to end. BBG's last line was obviously dubbed in later and it doesn't appear she said it while they were actually filming the scene. It looks as if JR was about to say something but that the scene was edited to just show him standing there. Strange.

I don't know about forgive....but she definitely never forgot....which is why she left the ranch to Bobby.

I also realized this was one of Three Times that there was a Voiceover. At the end when Miss Ellie signed the Contract, then when Bobby bought Pam her own Car, then when Bobby bought Christopher home and did a monologue.

The last remark at J.R. was put in later. You can tell

Miss Ellie should have told Vaughn Leland that she will definitely never forgive him for persuading JR to mortgage Southfork because he knew it was cold blooded.

I think to Bobby Wills are very sacred especially when he found out that a Bogus Will was in JR's "Secret Briefcase" that Julie Grey looked at as collateral. He felt that a promise was a promise, yet what he conveniently forgot was that Miss Ellie was so desperate to keep Southfork going, she turned to Jock for help and the rest is history.

Ares99999 Bobby did have some boneheaded dialogue that really never made sense. The first episode of the series, Bobby told JR that "Valene had every right to be at southfork, including him". Really Bobby? Sometimes Bobby was a Buffoon! lol

when TV was good, and free..people had patience and could wait 7 days to be entertained......I would love to see a story about a Young Jock and Ms. Ellie, it would be a great TV shows..introduce Digger Barnes and that crew..man it would be great!

It depends on the state that the concern is located. Some states have differing surface rights, and what's below ( mineral rights). In Texas I the mineral right is dominant.
