Yeezus is the sixth studio album by American rapper and producer Kanye West. It was released on June 18, 2013, through Def Jam Recordings and Roc-A-Fella Records. West gathered a number of artists and close collaborators for the production, including Mike Dean, Daft Punk, Noah Goldstein, Arca, Hudson Mohawke, and Travis Scott. The album also features guest vocals from Justin Vernon, Chief Keef, Kid Cudi, Assassin, King L, Charlie Wilson, and Frank Ocean.
Fifteen days before its release date, West enlisted the help of producer Rick Rubin to strip down the sound of Yeezus in favor of a more minimalist approach. The album has been characterized as West's most experimental and sonically abrasive work. It draws from an array of genres, including industrial, acid house, electro, punk, and Chicago drill. West's unconventional use of samples is also contained, as on "Blood on the Leaves", which contains a sample from Nina Simone's 1965 rendition of "Strange Fruit".
No album artwork is featured on the release of the former, and the physical CD edition was released in a clear jewel box with only a strip of red tape and sample credits. Initial promotion included worldwide video projections of the music and live television performances. West released two singles from the album; "Black Skinhead" in July 2013 and "Bound 2" the following month. The release of Yeezus coincided with that of rapper J. Cole's album Born Sinner, which was moved back a week to coincide with Yeezus' release, leading to speculation about which release would sell more copies.
Yeezus received widespread acclaim from critics, many of whom named it among West's best work and commended its brash direction, though public response was divided. The album was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 327,000 copies in the first week of release, while also topping the charts in Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, Russia and the United Kingdom. It has since been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and was named by several publications as one of the best albums of the 2010s, including Rolling Stone, who later included it at 269 on its 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Interesting fact, Virgil Abloh helped design the cover of the album. It represented the death of the CD era in music (with the streaming era coming to fruition at the time). The empty CD case with the blank CD inside actually symbolises an open casket of the CD, much like funerals. That's the genius of Kanye and Virgil (RIP).

About “Bound 2“ not supposed be there: pretty sure this song is supposed to act as a very tongue in cheek ending to the acid induced nightmare that is Yeezus. It is a complete shift in tone with themes centering around true love and finding the right person/building a family, almost suggesting an antidote to the previous nightmarish journey. But of course that comical happy ending reminiscient of a 60s TV show seems to good to be true and feels out place, we kinda know something is off. Uh-huh honey.

One thing I've noticed recently about this album is that On Sight and Bound 2 are both opposite yet perfect bookends for this album, with On Sight being a very hard, intense song cut up by breaks of a much softer sample, whereas Bound 2 is a soft sample song that is interjected by a hard bass more reflective of the rest of Yeezus throughout. The sample used in "On Sight" that plays in the middle of the track states that "He'll give us what we need, but it may not be what we want.". This not only perfectly shows how he knew people would react to the album, but also it explains Yeezus as a whole. The album may not be what people wanted, but Kanye felt that we needed something not done yet by him, and something new in the mainstream world of music, which he definitely brought attention to.

Bound 2 is meant for the album. It’s a purposeful contrast as it’s actually musical as opposed to the harshness of the rest of the album. It’s supposed to demonstrate the potential of the romance. It was overall indicative of him finally starting to date Kim and the hope he had for the relationship. It’s why you have that interlude in the middle of on On Sight. It foreshadows the music you’ll eventually get on Bound 2, an antidote to the intensity of everything else. Hope in the midst of darkness.

JUST AN FYI, the effect used on “Hold My Liquor” is called the “Prisimizer” effect. It’s used by fusing any auto-tune and the Antares Harmony Engine (really any harmony multiplier) together. Bon Iver was one of the first artists to use it in his music. Really beautiful sonically 🥰

Hold My Liquor isn't Prismizer, just the Antares Harmony Engine software - but they're related. Francis of Francis and the Lights "invented" the Prismizer by controlling Harmony Engine with a MIDI keyboard (obviously the functionality was there already but he was the first known to use it this way). Then he showed this to Justin Vernon of BI, whose engineer Chris Messina recreated the effect in hardware (Eventide H8000). The version that Justin uses on his albums is called the Messina. But on Yeezus it's just Harmony Engine running on an auto setting, no keyboard, which is what really makes the difference.

It was very different from what I’ve heard of Kanye up until that moment (not to imagine music in general in the early 2010’s). But as I listed again and again and finally looked into the sample he used, it became that much more grounded. It added onto the weight of the song. The original sample is so eerie and just overall morbid so although he changed it up here adds onto the monstrous theme I remember when I saw him live at SP tour, when it was dark and I heard that intro piano key - goosebumps. Arca was one of three leading producers on this album. I believe she has production credits for "Hold My Liquor", "I'm In it", "Blood on the Leaves", "Send It Up", and "New Slaves". Although she only has credits on those songs, her sound and impact is absolutely felt on the entire project. According to interviews with Arca, Kanye basically needed help making the album sound as industrial as it is. By that time, Arca had released her EP Stretch 1 and her album Stretch 2, which attracted Kanye's attention. Although she had other crazy projects out, like "Xen" and I believe "Mutant", it was the stretches that really got Kanye on the Arca wave. Kanye's team then reached out to her, and she responded by just sending them back what she considered to be her most insane and out of the ordinary production at the time. In "Hold My Liquor", you can actually hear some direct samples from Arca's album "&&&&&" in it. If you love this sound from Kanye and are looking to get into more industrial or "avant-garde" music, I really recommend Arca. I genuinely don't think there is anyone better making music currently. She also collaborated with fellow producer Sophie on the song "La Chiqui" off of her of album KiCk i and it's literally divine with how extravagant and extreme that track is. That quote your dad said about "Blood on the Leaves" with how it sounds like a two hour climactic movie condensed into song is basically the perfect way to describe all of Arca's music. Everything she does is indescribable and leaves both musicians and producers baffled at how she does what she does. If you particularly like the sound of Yeezus, I recommend starting with her album "KiCk iii", as it is her most straightforward, aggressive album. Arca is like a psychedelic for music -- none of it makes too much sense at first glance, you can't really grasp it, but once you get comfortable with the experience her art is genuinely profound. It also shows how tasteful Kanye actually was, as Arca was really underground by the time Yeezus was coming out. With that being said though, Arca was attracting attention to herself at the time due to her collaborations with Bjork -- which are also phenomenal and life changing. I can't imagine having enough respect as a musician and producer to be directly requested by KANYE to be one of the lead designers of his project. It also really shouldn't matter, but considering how hypersexual, homoerotic, and transsexual Arca's work has always been, it again is just a testament to her craft that Kanye and his collaborators looked past all their biases to just collaborate with her artwork.

Hold my Liquor sums it up: Chief Keef who just emerged to the scene, Bon Iver who were already a recognized indie band.
