The Life of Pablo is the seventh studio album by American rapper and producer Kanye West. It was released on February 14, 2016, through GOOD Music and distributed by Def Jam Recordings. Recording sessions took place from 2013 to 2016, in Italy, Mexico, Canada, and the United States. West and a variety of producers, including co-executive producers Rick Rubin and Noah Goldstein handled production. West enlisted guest vocals for the album from Chance the Rapper, Kirk Franklin, Kid Cudi, Desiigner, Rihanna, The Weeknd, Ty Dolla Sign, Post Malone, Kendrick Lamar, Sia, Vic Mensa, Chris Brown, Young Thug, and Sampha.
Several promotional singles preceded the release of The Life of Pablo, including the tracks "Real Friends" and "No More Parties in LA". During the months before its release, the album's title and tracklist went through several publicized changes. West premiered an early version at Madison Square Garden on February 11, 2016, as part of his Yeezy Season 3 fashion show. After several additional sessions and alterations, the exclusive launch occurred for streaming on Tidal three days later.
Following its official streaming debut, West continued to make changes to The Life of Pablo. A largely updated version of it, including alternate mixes and other changes, was made available on other streaming services and for digital purchase on his website on April 1, 2016. The singles "Famous", the two-part "Father Stretch My Hands", and "Fade" were released to support it in 2016. The album received generally positive reviews from music critics, with particular attention being paid to the fragmented, unfinished nature of the composition and release. Multiple publications named it one of 2016's best albums.
The Life of Pablo received five nominations at the 2017 Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Album, though the Album of the Year rejection was deemed a snub by numerous publications. Following Tidal's initial disclosure of its streaming data and its release to competing streaming services, the album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, becoming the first to reach the summit primarily through streaming, and was ultimately certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It also debuted at number one in Norway, and in the top ten in Canada, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

Coolest thing about Ultralight Beam is that Kanye didn’t use a choir at all. He’s so good at sampling he just took one woman’s voice and layered it to make it a choir.

Definitely some of the best rapping from Ye in the second half of his career, shame the verses earlier in the album lack a bit of focus. I also don't think it's Kendrick's best, I think I read it was an old verse he wasn't going to use on anything and Ye applied it to the beat so it wasn't recorded specifically for the track.

@@volkiii_ it's a good song but a bit out of place with the vibe that Kanye was on at the time, would've felt more in place in an earlier Ye album but doesn't discount how good a track it is. In terms of technical skill, it's some of his rapping no doubt but I quite like Ye when he finds the balance between flowing and having fun but also has taken some time with the writing. I think my favourite verses are probably more like Monster, Otis etc the OTT silly Kanye but with great flow.

@@volkiii_ for me Ye was more about the songs, the albums than one verse. Technically he was never the BEST rapper but he had the humour and fun of Lil Wayne, the swagger of Jay Z and the creative word play of Andre 3000 at times. He was a nice mix of different rappers with his own personality on top. It did feel like Parties and St Pablo were sort of chucked on at the end. Some of the best beats were the ones that sounded like natural developments from Yeezus like FML, Real Friends, Freestyle.

One of the most underrated aspects of TLOP is definitely the features. This album has the best features of probably any modern rap album, it's actually insanity. Just Rihanna, Frank and Kendrick is enough for an album features to be considered god tier - And besides that Kanye got Cudi, Thug, Post Malone, The Weeknd, Chris Brown etc. on here. This just speaks to how impactful Ye is in the industry, with all these all time great artists actually appearing on his album and practically all of them performing to the max of their potential. What a crazy project - I still listening to it from time to time and have a lot of tracks spread across my regular playlists as well.

I think the idea that Kanye was/is torn between the two lifestyles (family, God/excess, lust) is completely relatable to most of us. No disrespect to Christians; my experience with the people themselves was not the best. An individual would come to me and always brag about himself and being perfect and never straying away from the path of God. As a Christian myself, it's not "Christian" to brag about, then, when you slip up as this "perfect Christian" all eyes are on you and your mistakes and hypocritical way. I think 40% of Christians need to learn how to be humble with themselves.

FML is one of my favourite tracks. I dunno what the actual meaning of the song is, but it always takes me on a cool journey. Starting with Kanye's worries about not being in control of himself and always ruining the good things he has. As he peels back the layers of his soul searching for the reason for his self destructiveness it brings out the argumentative, defensive layer fuelled by some deep seated resentment to those around him. Then, around 3 minutes in, finally Kanye reveals his true self under all those layers and its a creepy repulsive creature that would freak people out. "don't stop your loving" Feels like Kanye begging that please, you gotta love this messed up creature underneath the layers. The true Kanye underneath is gross and messed up. But the true Kanye, unlike the ego-driven outer layers, only needs one person to love him. Anyway thats what always goes through my head when I listen. I have never peeled back all my layers and revealed everything to anyone. Maybe one day I will. But not today lol. Edit: I guess the whole album is just Kanye peeling back the layers to see whats underneath. In that respect, Saint Pablo is a nice track to end on.

The album represents who Kanye is as a person better than any of his albums. A person who had good intentions and wants to be good and like Jesus but struggles with lust, material desires and ego. Ultralight Beam is one of my favorite songs because of the feeling it gives me. I’m not religious whatsoever but it makes me want to be and makes me feel like I’m a believer in church. I just love how it transports you somewhere else. Also Chance’s verse is one of my favorites of his and the verse I would choose to rap to save my life (that silly little hypothetical situation) and I can do it perfectly with no music. I just love it!

No, there is definitely a theme. It's about choice. "Which one." The ablum about choice. Hedonism (freestyle 4) versus religion (ultralight beam). These are the two pictures on the cover. The album is a story about drifting from hedonism to religion and how finding his family brought him there in the end. Thats why its obsessed with mixing the sacred and profane together.

part of the reason the album seems to have so many different sounds and styles is in the name and concept itself. Life of Pablo refers to Kanye reflecting his own lifestyle and concious at that point in time and how he saw himself as a mix between the 3 famous Pablos: Pablo Picasso (artistic genius), Pablo Escobar (extremely wealthy, family-focused) and Saint Paul (religious, holy man of god)

I like to think that Yeezus to TLOP is where Kanye started getting into a more contemporary stage of his career. The music isn’t perfect like his previous works but it’s still extremely interesting and raw. I think a lot of it has that unfinished feel on purpose. I understand why your dad doesn’t love it at first, but as time has went on TLOP could be played now and sound new. The theme is interesting as well like your dad mentions (Pablo,Pablo, and Pablo).

MBDTF was the overall peak Ye for me and then Yeezus was his Kid A experimental 'as soon as people like you make them unlike you' moment. I think from that point on he really had to do something interesting to continue the run of fire albums and I think TLOP was the start of the decline sadly. Some great ideas but only a few of them executed with that Ye precision that we used to know and love (Real Friends for example). Most the other highlights (no pun intended) seemed to be half formed and rushed perhaps. It's an interesting album no doubt but it would probably site around 5th or 6th in the best Ye albums for me.
