Culture-Gene Interactions in Origins:Harpending-Nutrition and Spread of Indo-European Languages

(Visit: www.uctv.tv/) Indo-European languages are native to populations from Ireland to Afghanistan and India and, in historical times, to the Tarim Basin in China. This spread occurred within a few thousand years carried by people who were mostly horse pastoralists and who carried a mutant regulator of the lactase gene so that they could as adults digest milk sugar. Henry Harpending, University of Utah, discusses how individuals with such lactase persistence are able to extract 40% more calories from milk, while others usually ferment away the milk sugar lactose by making cheese or yogurt. While superior technology of invaders can be adapted by indigenous people, such a biological advantage cannot be copied. 9:21 this is quite accurate, the romanians for ex are by definition pastoralists throughout history, main diet included different types of milk cheese, organising their life around shepherd activities, you don't hear someone hear saying they have lactose intolerance, it's quite unusual and rare actually, I guess there is a mutation in these genes. Could this be true that modern europeans are descending from the farmers in Old Europe, proximity of the Black Sea /anatolian peninsula ? also the distribution in space of the indo-europeans languages is the same as the distributions of lactose tolerance mutation.

It makes sense for the distribution of languages to be concentric as well, from curent Turkish anatolian -> bulgarian, romanian near Black Sea and then throughout Europe. Romanian language for ex has similarities with latin that other romance languages from west don't have.
