CARTA: The Origin of Us -- Chris Stringer: Fossil Record of Anatomically Modern Humans
(Visit: www.uctv.tv) Evidence points strongly to Africa as the major center for the genetic, physical and behavioral origins of both ancient and modern humans. In this talk, Chris Stringer (Natural History Museum, London) reviews recent genetic and paleontological research that suggests more complex scenarios for our origins than had been considered previously. This includes the likelihood of interbreeding between archaic and modern humans, both within and outside of Africa. Here's what's not explained by out-of-Africa: West Africa is a lot closer and easier to travel to from anywhere else in Africa than is, say, Australia... yet we have modern humans in Australia 45kya but in West Africa only 13kya. Are you sure you've got the genes flowing the right direction??

k1w1 How are we sure Homo sapiens made those tools? It seems more like a guess to me. My only logical assumptions is it is either there were no humans present at the time, or the environment is more prone to degrading fossils than other areas hence the lace of evidence for a human presence.

Fossils don't preserve well in tropical environments. But stone tools do, and there are so many stone tools in West Africa that it's the null hypothesis that there were modern humans there.

@NA Phiri Most of Africa is not tropical; it's dry steppe.
