The best start you can do with Alfred is to help hold off the Vikings in East Anglia. Once your brother dies, takes over Cornwall, grab as much of Whales as you can, let the Vikings much a bit of more of north England, then negotiate the Danelaw. You'll get the England Kingdom, so you don't have to worry about forming it, then you're free to expand across England without having to worry about succession.

Never mind the pronounciations, that was really cool :) I usually find that to do well as Scotland, you need to get busy with the assassinating early on, to break Ivar's power base. I love to play with Cornwall the most. With enough good allies you can manage to reconquer Britannia for the native romano brits. I actually managed to become emperor of Britain and got the name Pendragon. So I also gave my ruler family the name. A very good way to start is to ally with Gwynedd and one of the Irish kingdoms and go for the kingdom of Bretagne. Once you have the title king of Bretagne you can nearly choose your allies. You can ally with Wessex, with the western frank Kingdom or one of its duchys, or alba or one of the many Irish kingdoms. Then you can go after for the Welsh and with the right allies also for the vikings. And at the end, when the vikings are beaten and king Alfred is dead you can go for Wessex with the right allies.

Cornwall actually is secretly pretty powerful. You are guaranteed to get an alliance with west francia at the very start. When I played my first steps were to take out the viking count of leon (take out haesteinn if he is distracted in another war or ends up dying) then expand into wales. Once you have does this just keep expanding all over britannia and eventually take out wessex when alfred the great dies. I'm from cornwall so I have played this start many times.

Jorvik and Sudreyjar start out incredibly easy but get very difficult very fast unless you convert to Christianity. You’ll be constantly holy warred by British realms and vassals in northern France until you kill them and unless you convert to Christianity and anglo-Saxon culture you’ll be facing almost endless peasant revolts. Not to mention that your special soldiers don’t replenish and at least in the case of Jorvik you are feudal and thus don’t have the levy bonus that tribes get, meaning that combined with constant low country control from the endless revolts you’ll only have about 1-2k levies while controlling most of England. All in all despite how easy they seem (and are labeled) in my experience they’re actually pretty hard!

my guide for Wessex would be start as Alfred when you become a petty king, ally with Mercia and Cornwall and when you have a daughter make a alliance with Gwynedd (in real life Wessex used Alfred's daughter "aethelflaed" to ally Mercia and eventually she became the queen and after she dies her brother Edward (the king of Wessex after Alfred) took the throne by killing the council who were then fighting if they should put aethelflaeds daughter on the Mercia throne and that unified both Wessex and Mercia for good) but after you ally with them you should save east Anglia and when the Danes attack east Anglia again fight them with all of the Anglo Saxons help and conquer east Anglia for yourself and attack jorvik (northumbria) and once you do that you should have enough to form the Kingdom of England AND have so good relations with Mercia and Cornwall that they would accept vasilization. ofc it is a little harder than that but that should be able to do right inside Alfred's lifetime (in reality it was Alfred's grandson who united England but that doesn't matter) NOTE: LEAVE NORTHUMBRIA(during the first years) YOU CANT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT AS IF YOU DO WESSEX WILL FALL BECAUS THEY ARE SUPER STRONG (tried it many times failed each)

You did well on trying some of those pronunciations, considering you're not actually fluent in those languages. A strategy I've found that works well for dealing with Halfdan and Ivar is assassinating them. Their special armies stand down on succession, so you can kneecap their snowballing early if you can pull that off.

It's not controversial to say "Britain", it's what the island with England, Wales and Scotland on it is called. When you include Ireland and all the other smaller islands, they are "The British Isles". The controversy comes from referring to all the people that live on the islands as "British". It doesn't help that what was essentially an English Empire referred to itself as "The British Empire" for hundreds of years. CK3 actually handles this really well by calling the Empire level title "Britannia". Doesn't have the same overtones.

What are fun options for religion? Preferably I want to make my own religion, but it takes so much piety! Converting to something that is already similar to what I want may be a good idea. Or maybe even make a religion twice to spread the piety cost over two generations. If you make a religion with synchretism (either pagan or christian), how much does that solve? Will that prevent most hostility and difficulty in converting? I want a small kingdom but a HUGE dynasty, converted dynasty members that spread the religion (and good traits). The two step faith creation could include a christian faith with pagan synchretism or reverse. Maybe sacred lies, a penchant for witchcraft and concubines for fast breeding 😁. Esoterism, unrelenting faith, so many fun tenets to choose from! When the pagans are mostly extinct switch out for better tenet, or eastern synchretism and spread to far away regions by marrying into nice if randomly located noble lines. It could be cheaper to convert (again) to an existing faith and create a new one from that (so no +500% cost lunacy). I also like alexandrian catechism (coptic has it), but I suppose being fundamentalist will make spreading it hard. Would this work, and any tips?

Been meddling with a similar idea myself and i dont think syncreticism will help much because catholicism has the fundamentalist tennent (i think) which basically means they are opposed to any sort of offshoot. Maybe orthodoxy will work better, or the version of islam in Spain would probably work better as they already have syncretism with catholics as well as mines and a few duchies with special buildings.

No, that isn't true. Britain is shorthand for the island that is great britain. Scotland is included in Britain as Britain is literally the same as great britain, It's just an island and there's nothing political about it. The term "British isles" is also frowned upon in Ireland, just say the isles.

@@thevis5465 lol tf are you to tell me about my country? Great Britain is my island, Britain is short for GB but many scots I know use Britain for England and Wales especially since Scotland and NI have more devolved powers and is why Boris always says Britain to speak of the whole UK like an imperialist granddad. And finally it is the British Isles. Unfortunately for Ireland Great Britain is the bigger island and lends its name to the whole isles. I don’t care if Ireland is offended by geography, they’re lucky they’re even independent. Tho if Ireland was the bigger than it would the Irish Isles. Not once have I ever ever heard of the isles😂😂

@@ManiacalInc Fun fact: The original name given to the island of Ireland in classical geographic works was "Mikra Pretannia" -- "Little Britain", as opposed to the isle the Britons lived on called "Megale Pretannia", "Great Britain". This is probably why the island England, Scotland, and Wales are on is called "Great Britain". But given the history between the two islands, I'm not surprised that "British Isles" isn't much liked in Ireland.
