Any cooking video that gives the recipe right up front instead of stringing people along for views, deserves a thumbs up right away. It's one of those things that shows someone cares a little bit extra. I will be trying this very soon. I just got to the end and saw them toasted with butter and jam... Maybe sooner than I planned. This made me unexpectedly really sad! My grandma always said she won’t buy crumpets from the shops because they don’t taste right but nobody she knew had a recipe for them (a problem we literally cannot experience these days…). But she’d said on many occasions she still remembered what “real crumpets” tasted like from the bakery and wished she was smart enough to make and share them with us so we knew… she passed away years ago now but I stupidly got the idea, “I wonder if these crumpets are what grandma still remembers, I should make them for her.”, for a split second before remembering she’s gone. Sorry grandma would have loved to share some with you but I’ll still have to try it now :(

My husband loves KZread and saw yours last night, asking me if I’d ever had crumpets. I said, “Yes and they’re wonderful”! I just tried your recipe and they are perfect! I made mine with Better Batter 1:1 gluten free flour since I’m intolerant. I added 3 extra Tbsp of water to my batter and proofed in the oven with the light on. They’re even better than I’d hoped!!! You mean English crumpets from England; or were your British crumpets from Wales or Scotland? Scotch whisky is from Britain and is British whisky, but it's made in Northern Britain, which is Scotland, so we call it Scotch whisky (note the spelling). I'm an Englishwoman from England, whereas a British woman who could also be Welshwoman or a Scotswoman. There are three countries in Britain, and four in the United Kingdom. England is not a sovereign country: it doesn't have its own government, nor its own King, but the UK does. The word united gives a clue to there being more than one country in the kingdom. Anything from England is precisely English, including me and my language. Simple.

I saw this as a recommended video and I used to be a chef at restaurants and cafes in New Zealand back in the 90's and 2000's. I completely lost the love to cook, let alone bake for a few reasons but mainly 1 Head Chef that just took the fun away. However, seeing the sheer kindness and excellent recipe you made, well, it made me want to subscribe and try to get back into cooking something (I never imagined I could think that way again). I had flashbacks long forgotten of growing up in the early 80's cooking Pikelets and Pancakes with my Mum on a Saturday morning that had a similar recipe to this one in many ways was a nice surprise and good motivator, she would be happy. I buy crumpets too, but NOT any more thanks to you John!!! John, if you see this, I saw that you have attempted or have given a heart and a reply to more than 500 comments (I got tired looking further), that alone is something so beautiful in nature I was humbled. Be very proud of yourself for being so selfless and thank you for being an example of what I think is just pure kindness to all. :)

About never buying another Crumpet again - you have THAT right! Only I have never tasted Crumpets before I started making them at home from your recipe and I can guarantee you I won't be buying them now. Mine come out PERFECT every time. I bought one of those infrared temp gauges and never knew there was such a thing, now I won't cook without it. I make my Crumpets on a 12" Lodge cast iron pan I already had, but I did need to buy a set of Crumpet rings...I kid you NOT ~ I must have made 8-dozen since I started as I can't resist giving them away to my friend and her husband, and my son adores them with coffee in the morning, and of course I only get a few to myself, but I enjoy each bite I do get. As a Pole who moved to the UK just before teenagehood, I got to be influenced by both, Home and the UK fairly equally. Now in my mid 20s, I combine the two often. Crumpets with Polish pate, Yorkshire puddings filled with buckwheat and gravy and so on. Don't knock it until you try it!

@@Sushilover01 I do from time to time, but (mainly due to nostalgia I imagine) I usually buy the ready/tinned stuff. The two main Polish brands are Profi and Podlaski, both about same quality wise. They’re nothing special, and admittedly, they do look like wet cat food in the tin, however the flavour is very pleasant and there’s many types to choose from with anything from garlic to sun dried tomatoes as a “topping”. They’re also handy to have in your pantry as they’re very shelf stable and cheap so I usually just buy a dozen whenever I visit the Polish shop.

During my childhood, I spent some scarce holidays in the north-eastern part of the UK, and I often heard the word "crumpet" being used in a pretty different context and meaning. I never understood that the name actually applied to this mouth-watering delicacy. I now also understand why they used the same name for the other "activity", more over I now understand why my mother doubled with laughter. One is never too old to learn. For certain I will make these for my grandchildren. When they are old enough, and I live long enough, I might explain the other meaning. Some things should never get lost.

I'm from the US and have heard about 'crumpets' for years but never tasted one or even really knew what they were. Ithink is time I remedied this and give this recipe a try because they look absolutely lovely! Almost made my mouth water watching the video!🤤 Thx for sharing the recipe. 💜

Loved crumpets since I was a child. All my life whenever I have crumpets, I have two. One with butter and jam, and one just covered in butter. (not margarine, proper butter). Absolutely love them!

Oh, I take it you guys only know it as all purpose and not plain? If that's the case I can see why it would be confusing for people. We know it as both, And the product is called either in the shops depending on brand.

A dear friend sent me this recipe after I revealed that I'd never tried crumpets, insisting it was the only proper way to have them. I tried it this evening for the very first time, with butter and jam, and it's unlike any bread or pastry I've ever tasted. The textures are fascinating and so comforting, especially paired with a hot tea. This batch is already gone, but I will definitely be making more soon to stock my freezer. Thank you!!

I grew up with “crumpet pizza” for weekend lunch. Layer on your toasted crumpet: sautéed onion rings, sliced tomato, tin sardines in tomato sauce, top with strong cheddar. Heat in oven approx 25 min. Make them for my family and we love them on a rainy day 😊

John…. I love the no nonsense straight up traditional advice and instruction. I’m autistic and super critical so please be assured this is a very big compliment from me. I am an Englishman living homeless in Australia and I am always on the look out for good simple and easy useful recipes with flour. I’m not usually a lover of crumpets but with no milk to make poor man’s pancakes this feels like it could be a good substitute. Thanks John. Brilliant work.

Wow John. another winner! Made these last night: Made the first two too thick and burned them, made the next two thinner and less scorched and finally nailed the correct temperature (I really have to get one of those thermometers) and the last four were perfect. So this morning I popped them in the toaster and served them up with a fried egg and smoked salmon on top! Not had a proper crumpet since I was in the UK 10 years ago. This recipe is right up there with your fabulous suet pudding steak and kidney which is the best I have ever tasted. Thank you!

Two weeks since I first watched this and I can't stop making them! I normally triple everything and use 4 inch crumpet rings. So far I haven't frozen any as they keep well in an airtight box. I take 2 to work for lunch every day 😁
