Croatia, World Champions of Celebration, in Life and in Death

The atmosphere in Croatia right now is incredible, as the Vatreni have powered their way to the semi-finals of the World Cup, where they face Argentina. Whether or not they go all the way remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure - Croatians are already the world champions at celebration. In life and in death, they sure know how to turn on the passion and style.
A trip back to July 2018, and two very different events in the space of 2 weeks showcased the passion of Croats in very different ways. The unforgettable welcome home of the Croatian team from Moscow, when an amazing 550,000 people lined the streets of Zagreb, this in a country of just 4 million. This was followed by the death of musical icon, Oliver Dragojevic, one of the great legends of Croatia. The funeral cortege from Split to Vela Luka on Korcula, was a very fitting send-off.

It's almost 5 years since Oliver left us and I still can't believe he's gone. I'm a grown ass man in his fifties but I cried like my own father died. That's the best way to describe how beloved he was.

Don't forget about all those welcomes in other cities from where the Croatian footballers are. Zadar, Split, Omiš, Livno, Varaždin, Karlovac. So the number rises to about 800 thousand of Croats who welcomed footballers.

Awww , thank you for the nice words. It was crazy how the atmosphere changed in just 2 weeks... from pure joy and happiness to pure sadness. I never experienced that here, especially in Split (I live close to it). Even 4,5 years later we cant wrap our heads around what actually happened at the WC and as well as that Oliver is gone. It was like a family member died to be honest. And also whats happening at the WC 2022... I guarantee you that no matter how this ends there will be a massive party again. Being twice in a row in a semi final and potentially final is something you could not make up.

Very nice description of our mentality Mr. Bradbury. Thank you for that and also for every time you tried to open eyes of many Croats who are not aware what country they have. I have read some of your texts earlier and I liked them very much. Especially the one about Slavonija since I was born there. Here is a very interesting piece of information for you if you already didn't hear it. On the day of the finals will be the 31st anniversary of the murder of Modric's grandfather. Wouldn't it be mindblowing if he manage to raise that trophy in honour of his grandpa whose name, by the way, was also Luka?

@@PaulBradbury Geographically, we definitely belong to the Balkans. But some of us are too proud to admit that, because the word brings some negative connotations, like being mixed in the same pot with other Balkan nations, which we (sometimes desperately) want to differentiate from, mostly in cultural sense. So, when a Croatian tells you that we are not part of the Balkans, he actually knows we are a part of it, but still wants to express his resentment toward being mixed with other Balkan nations. That's just our pettiness talking, as we want to be recognized as an independent nation, which belongs to the Western (more civilized) culture and society. I hope you understand.
