Bratko, we also produced World cup bronze medal winning team in 1994, however we no longer have the same winning mentality. Incredibly corrupt, selfish and destructive leadership in sports and in economy in general. I believe that the smallest nations to ever reach World cup medals are Uruguay, Croatia and Bulgaria.

Actually this video is wrong. Half of the team who won second place in 2018 is from Bosnia, including selector Dalic. So the area from where these players come is much larger, and with more people. Besides, size of the country means nothing because you have the same number of players on both sides. It's not like one country with much larger population plays against other with small population. It's about the will to play.

Seriously. It feels like top6 nations occupy like 90 per cent of top5 leagues. And I don't think that's unfair, but I think our talent isn't appreciated enough like iin Scandinavian teams or Belgium for example where we should be comparable. Our next gen talents look better than ever and apart from highs being so high what makes me like our football is average is much higher then before meaning when youngster is top talent in Croatia he's also top talent in Europe. Everyone is raving about Gvardiol, but that's because he's RB Leipzig player. Players such as Baturina, Beljo, Šutalo should be in top5 team next summer already. Not to mention players like Livakovič, Juranović Sosa and Majer deserve top club already.

@@hellothere9763Honestly it isn’t easy for a player like Rakitic or Modric to make it at a big club. I think there are plenty of Croatians and Uruguayans who would do well at small clubs like Bologna and Monza but the problem is once you perform really well, you start demanding wages that only big clubs can pay and it is harder to win a starting spot. So most players end up going to Saudi or MLS, and then a few years later are back playing in their domestic league.

He was a prototype of nowadays modern striker, great pace, stamina and chips, great club career...sadly he haven't got a real chance to shine in Croatian national squad alongside Davor Šuker during the first Croatian Golden Generation '96 and '98 because he we was injury prone. No , this is only if you look on the situation from the outside! The most talented players come from Dalmatia , the south of Croatia . The truth is that Dinamo has monopolized the whole Croatian League through corruption . Because they corrupted all the football system and have all the money , they buy everything that can play in Croatia and they also have or had the government behind them. The explanation why the are so many good players , is because Croatians are good in Sports and are strong mentally But everything in Croatia is improvisation, there is absolutely no plan behind this , in Croatia corruption is everywhere ... Probably the academy coaches are also doing a good job , but still it's mostly insane talent , because like I said there isn't either a plan or structure in anything here in Croatia

About 80 percent of the Croatian budget comes from tourism. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that Croatia has booming tourism, but 80 percent of tourism alone is pretty fu..ed up. If one summer, for example, Croatia had a rainy season, it would be felt very much. Also, Serbia and especially Bosnia have different problems than Croatia and had different historical circumstances than Croatia, so please be a little realistic. And if we are already talking about the European Union and who deserves to be in it, Bulgaria and Romania are economically behind Serbia and in terms of infrastructure behind Serbia and Bosnia, but they are still in the EU. So it's not all black and white.

Great analysis, the only thing I'd add to this is street football. It is rarely mentioned, but it's an important factor. Croatian kids spend much of their childhood just kicking the ball around and playing five-a-side on local concrete playgrounds, which is a proven way of developing great technique, composure, and decision-making in tight spaces, hence we have so many great midfielders and ball-playing defenders. It's just a big part of Croatian football culture that contributes to developing technically gifted players, much like Brazil's beach football and playing on small favela pitches, or Spain's futsal practices. Luka Modrić started his footballing path by just kicking the ball off the walls in his refugee camp, controlling it, and kicking it back; his early coaches stated that this is the place he learned his famous first touch and turn (probably also his outside of the boot pass because you don't learn that stuff at the academy). Almost every neighborhood and village in Croatia have its local five-a-side tournaments; you would be amazed at how much talent, competitiveness, and toughness you'd see from amateur players, a lot of them being self-thought with zero football practices in their life

Yugoslavia did not help to the development of Croatian football it suffocated it. Ethnic Croats (especially from BosniaHerzegovina) were underrepresented in exYugoslav national team either as players, either as coaches. Playing for Croatian team (especially Dinamo) was also a minus, so a mediocre player from Serbian or BosniaHerzegovinian club had privileged possibility to get into national team. The imposive state policy of "yugoslavization" of clubs, that is artificially (without any sportly reason) increase the share of players of non-native ethnicity in clubs, making it more ethnically diverse, in reality reflected mostly at the expense of Croats and Croatian clubs, bringing more Serbian, Montenegrin, Bos.-Her. Serb or Bos.-Her.Muslims into Croatian club, while local talented Croats stagnated, never having chance to make it into the first team and properly develop. Croatian mentality is Catholic, they are Central Europeans and Mediterraneans combined. Also, Catholic clubs, national teams and players are the most succesful. The rest of major exYugoslav ethnicities are not Catholics: Slovenians are, but they prefer wintersports. Croats play football similarly to Italy and Hungary, unlike Balkan countries like Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina that play similarly like e.g. Bulgaria or Greece. Croats have florished once they got rid of that exYugoslav millstone around the neck that was slowing them down, even retarding them.

No, what he meant to say was yugoslavia helped with development of football by building the necessary infrastructure in croatia that made it possible for a lot of the talent to appear. Literally every single village in croatia, no matter how small, has a football pitch where children spend most of their free time, and 95% of it was built between 50s and 70s. That's why there's so much talent to be found, cause every child in every "vukojebina" has the opportunity to play football on an ok terrain from young age. you can argue with it as much as you like, but the impact yugoslavia had on football development in croatia is huge. It's a very similar story with czechoslovakia and hockey, both of those countries are too small to have such a huge pool of good hockey players, yet they're top class. That's cause every town with 3000+ population has a hockey rink. Now what you're saying about the "unfairness" is mostly right, state policy of having a diverse team was indeed often more important than talent. But you kind of missed the point he was making

It was bankrupt and defaulted on its loans by 1980, a complete disaster and another commie experiment that lead to stagnation, poverty and genocide. It's history events that shaped DNA of Croatian people. Croatias geographic location is crossroad of civilisations - which means war. Always weaker regarding army size and technology, that's why we had to be handy, crafty, masters of improvisation, quick thinking and physically strong with mental strength (never give up!). Sports just reflect it in measurable way. Just see in what conditions these results are forged, in comparation to big sport nations (take football infrastructure first, than all other sports)

Also Lukaku had at best 3 chances, one of them could be considered clear cut, another one was offside in any case, while Croatia had chances of their own and a penalty not given because of a ridiculous offside call. Otherwise, very good vid!

Football originated in Dalmatia (part of modern Croatia) more than 2000 years ago and was played by Delmatae people. Modern ball is almost identical by structure to theirs. After Roman conquest of Dalmatia It was spread by Roman legionaries across Europe via Roman military camps. 2000 years later some Englishmen invented modern football rules and standards and that's how modern football emerged.

I think from birth year 1995 upwards Gvardiol is probably the only class player we've produced. Maybe Majer and Sosa too, depends on the perspective.

@@HScorpio1811I completely agree. Crostia's success is not because they produce an abundance of world class players, because squad-wise they're on the same level as teams like Poland or Denmark. It's because of their fighting spirit, mentality, unity and the tactical mastery of Dalic that they achieved so much success in recent years. A team like Germany might have a better squad than Croatia, but Croatia would absolutely spank Germany if they played each other today, just cause Croatia is much more well organised and has a better mentality.

@@dutchvanderlinde8034 Well, a lot of our success is due to our midfield, which is truly world class. I do think we are better than Poland individually but it won't stay that way if we don't produce better young players than we have done lately. We've had way too many talents who flopped recently. But I agree with you that we somewhat overperformed at the last two World Cups, in large part thanks to being good at penalties.
