Crisis Zone (PS2) - No Continues - 4,056,740

I've beaten the "Grassmarket District" levels without getting hit, too: • Crisis Zone: Grassmark...
Here is a no-continue (no death) run on Time Crisis: Crisis Zone. This is the PlayStation 2 port, played on the PCSX2 emulator, using a GUN4IR gun.
Crisis Zone was a 1999 arcade game by Namco that got a remake on the PlayStation 2 in 2004. "Time Crisis" was added to the title to make it more obvious this was a spin-off. The graphics and audio are updated, but the basic concept -- laying waste to terrorists and the environment with a machine gun -- remains the same.

Like Time Crisis, Crisis Zone has a "cover" system: step out of cover to shoot enemies, hide in cover to avoid damage and reload. Cover in this game takes the form of a shield.
When an enemy's gonna hit you, an aiming reticle appears around them, and a warning beep plays. If you don't hide in cover or defeat the enemy quickly, you lose a life. Some enemies throw projectiles, which may or may not have these warning signs. Certain projectiles tend to be difficult to see.
The scoring strategy is twofold: beat levels quickly, and score high combos. The faster you beat levels, the more points you get. Combo hits are scored each time you hit an enemy or part of the scenery. Enemies die faster with headshots, and apparently that gives you bonus points.
I took a crappy hit in this playthrough due to getting out of cover too soon, though it looked like I successfully avoided the hazard. I was maybe a few frames off, but it was strange regardless. There are no bonus lives--by default, you only have 4. You can still clear the game without much issue if you're good, but mistakes will accumulate and put the run in a precarious situation.
I'll probably revisit this game and go for a higher score. For now though, 4 million was my goal and I'm happy I achieved it. Crisis Zone isn't my favorite "Crisis" game currently, but I still think it's fun, well paced, and has impressive levels of destruction. The game does a good job making your weapon feel powerful.
I've never played Crisis Zone's arcade version -- I've just seen videos -- so I don't know how that version feels compared to the PS2 one. I remember seeing the cabinet at some arcades as a child, but those locations have since removed the game, sadly.

Great run! For my money, I think Crisis Zone has only gotten better over time now that most newer rail-shooters have embraced machine guns. That's not even to say Razing Storm is a bad 'sequel' either, but I think having both players on the same screen was a huge mistake. Makes blocking in 2P a huge hassle. Really hope they make another game in this series next (and with each player on their own cab!)

Thank you Jeremy! I think Razing Storm's fun, but in my opinion Crisis Zone flows a bit better. This is largely since there's little to no dialogue during gameplay that pauses the action. I would see people play Razing Storm in 2-player, and often they got confused when figuring out which shots to block (it's red for Player 1 and blue for Player 2, if I remember). And yeah, another machine gun-style Crisis game would be great!
Love this game. I used to play the arcade version with the recoil machine gun…man that was something…I’ve seen mods on here where the solenoid has been put into a g-con2 which makes it effectively the same thing. Still, the home release as you say does a great job of making the gun feel meaty and powerful. It’s hard as fuck though! I think it’s a tie between this and TC2 as my personal favourites. I wondered what version you was playing as noticed you don’t have the annoying muzzle flash present on ps2 but guessing you’ve hacked that out using PCSX2

Thanks for watching. To remove the muzzle flash, I had to dump the texture in PCSX2, change it in a photo editor to be transparent, and patch it back into the game. There's some tutorials online on how to do this. Makes a huge difference for sure!
Better Than Arcade Version ^^

I still prefer the arcade version but the PS2 port is still enjoyable. The sound effects and pacing in the arcade version jive with me more.
Much better if this game had 2 options so you would either choose the arcade version or the ps2 version

That would've been awesome for sure.
