I made a vampire that was turned when she was only 12 because without it, she would die. She became an astrologer for 400 years learning under a very kind scholar who helped her with her vampire hunger problems. While she was forever 12, she was really mature and kind and the party was fine with it. It actually helped us in a few situation with her being young looking. Nothing gross happened, no pedo npcs or anything. Everyone loved her. She's now a wizard apprentice to a god of time

i think it ultimatly was less an issue with the character and more an issue with the player.. When a player comes in that hard with a character, especially a npc, that's red flags.. Especially when she went off about wanting her characters boobs to be explained in detail to the rest of the party, that's a big nope for most people. and typically with those types of people you don't want to give them even an inch or they will try (and most of the time actually get it) to take a mile.

I would expect "creepy" is supposed to be about impression rather than law. And a 5000-year-old looking as a 16-year-old doesn't seem to be creepy either psychologically (because psychologically, 5000-years-old is clearly old enough) or physically (because a 16-year-old female body is essentially an adult body, which is partly reflected by there existing consent laws of the kind I mentioned before) to me. The creepiness only arises if you associate the inapplicable psychological argument (countries that don't approve of sex with 16-year-old disapprove of it because those people are taken to be _psychologically_ immature, which such eternally-young characters aren't) with the _label_ of "looking sixteen" (because the actual _look_ of "looking sixteen" is barely distinguishable from "looking eighteen").

It also makes so much sense to put a literal god right before your weaker BBEG character. I mean talk about the perfect challenge for the party, right? For the 2nd story, I get the feeling the DM targeting Bard. Translating the 40k story to DnD, this is what happened: One player is going to be a custom barbarian, and the DM gives them a custom regeneration ability. Gets approved. The DM's DMPC is a Battlemaster fighter. Obviously approved. Last player asks to be a wizard. DM shoots that down for being too complex. Then player asks to be a Paladin. DM shoots that down as well. Finally, player asks to be an Aarakocra rogue. DM boots him from the call and game. Also, sleep is a wonderful spell. I see no issue with a player choosing to rely on it heavily. Especially in this situation, where DM is new and is having a hard time managing the rules. They should be grateful that the bard is keeping things simple, rather than flexing their deep spell list. It seems like the DM doesn't want Bard to play complicated classes, but also gets annoyed when the bard's playstyle is too simple/repetitive. Obviously trying to demand 18 cha sounds scummy to me, but the 40k bit made it seem like DM favors the Monk player a lot. Does the Monk have a bunch of 18's or absurd gear that makes her always steal the show in combat? Also, it's not like the Bard wants the 18 cha so that he can be the ultimate badass. His strategy is literally to spam Sleep, a support spell. DM seems to get pissy about bard "wasting his turns" when the sleep spell fails. Does DM give the martial characters a hard time when they miss all their attacks? I bet not. Also, I think DM is using incorrect rules for the sleep spell. Of course, normally Charisma has no effect on sleep, but It kinda sounds like DM was having the bard do attack rolls for it. (and mentions how he wasn't even going to make it on a 10)

Ok, the DM in the second story was big problem in his own right. He openly admits to not understanding several 40k concepts and hides behind his inexperience but then why is he running a 40k homebrew at all? First of all, D&D is not at all designed for that. Second, there are already 40k RPGs out there he could have used. Third, Monk gets to have a self heal but everyone else just has to be a basic melee marine? Also, in 40k Chaplains and lieutenants are roughly equivalent in stature so letting bard be a chaplain when rogue gets to be a lieutenant would not have been a big deal at all. It doesn't justify Bard's repeated belligerent attitude, but a lot of the issues in this 40k homebrew were fueled by the DM seeming to just want to force Bard to be something generic and not let him be on par with the other players.

  • @JackHails

Seconded. We all start somewhere, but I would never run a game where I'm unfamiliar with the world and even less so the mechanics of the system. Even if you're trying to homebrew it in dnd, how hard wouldnt it have been to take a couple wizard spells and turn them into psychic powers for a libarian? Or a couple clerics spells into litanies for a chaplain. Or just like you said - use one of the 40k ttrpg system. I don't know when the story happens, but Deathwatch, for example, is a system from 12 years ago where the players are space marines. Bard was a dick, but the DM seems like wasnt willing to do some lite prep to accomodate all of their players.

Why would he run a 40k homebrew? Probably just because he thought it could be fun. Also, it seems like he IS using a 40k roleplaying system just trying to take their characters from their DnD session and swap them over as best he can. That may be a misunderstanding on my part though. I don't know enough about 40k to be able to say anything about him saying yes/no to character choices. I do think it seems like he may have singled out Bard though seeing as how Monk often felt the need to interject and straight up mute the DM so she could talk to Bard. All in all, it just looks to be a friend group that got themselves in over their heads trying to play a fun roleplaying game together, and in the end they couldn't get over the friction it caused. Had something similar happen to me before, and it's really sad to see people you thought were good friends tear those friendships apart over something meant to be fun.

I think you've got more or less the right idea about the second story. It sounded pretty much like the DM said 'no magic classes' and let a character take a feat or something to get one spell or some cantrips. I've had DMs do that before and I like playing casters. The sensible thing to do is realise that the game they want to run isn't for you and not try to force the issue. The issue with the player was less that they got annoyed about not being able to play the class they wanted and more that it was a consistent pattern of behaviour across several games. They wanted to be the strongest character in the party all the time and couldn't share narrative space with the others. They couldn't let the DMs rulings pass without arguing them. And when the group tried to discuss this with them they repeatedly said they'd change then didn't. That kind of thing can be incredibly aggravating when you're around it a lot.

And yeah, his other mistake was to let one player have (arguably) special treatment and play a super powered warrior nun via convoluted character background bullsh!t and a limp excuse about character gender. If he was actually against complex characters he could have required her to play a female guardsman or zealot.

Make the new role someone that's enamored by the BB, and has this unconditional love and loyalty for a man "so great she can never be with" 2. instead of a completely overpowered character, make her a promising strong magic caster with spells that conveys power rather then simply squashing the party. give her a power complex, but leave her wide open against some common anti caster tactics (such like casting a silence spell on top of her then grappling her) It could be power level of a deadly encounter, but by her being so young and unexperienced in combat she offers the party an easy way out. I can sympathize with both the DM and the Player is story #2. DM felt like they couldn’t handle too many in-game variables. There are lots of rules to remember and sometimes simplifying the game makes it a little easier to learn and run. Player wanted to play a character that they actually wanted to play, not just sit at a table and be told what to play. They wanted their character to feel personal. Now all of their friends are ganging up on them for it. Rather than arguing about how difficult it would be, they should have had a Session 0. The DM could get practice running the game and they could work with the player to see how well their chosen character works out. If it’s still difficult to run, then either the player makes a new character or leaves the group.

Sounds pretty straightforward. From what I understand the DM said "I'm new to this game (they ALL are) so can you just pick really simple classes?" and then this guy does the equivalent of going "Can I be a mystic?" which is a VERY complicated class, because another player got to be a FIGHTER. Then he's like "Ok ok fine. How about I can fly?" NOPE! FUUUUUUCK YOU. I say simple and you work your way down to FLYING? That's super broken! If you don't know what your DM means by simple, ask for a list of classes they're confident in running. If you don't want to play any of those classes, don't play in this game. Especially since it was a ONE SHOT. Like OHHHH my god I get it if it's like a full campaign, but a ONE SHOT? Shit, if I get to hang out with some friends and play DnD if it's as a ONE SHOT I'll accept literally everyone being FIGHTERS. Not even like eldritch knights and arcane archers and psi warriors, I'm talking BATTLE MASTER FIGHTERS ALL AROUND! For a full campaign, that's NOT acceptable, but for a fun one shot to help the players AND the DM get used to how the game works? Yeah, that sounds like fun. And that's the MOST restrictive, this guy is being CONSIDERABLY more generous.

It always amazes me when there's players like the final story. My first dnd group had a player who wanted to minmax, and we were all first-timers so nobody complained. He started rules-lawyering and cutting off the DM before they had time to finish speaking, and basically dragged our party around without asking any of us for input. This only lasted one session before we all came together and called him out on it. He wasn't very good with picking up social cues or reading the room in general, but he at least TRIED to change. He was actually sorry, and promised to slow down and work WITH the party. He ended up being the smartest player, we honestly would have died several times if it weren't for his quick thinking. The dude was able to catch himself when he started to mess up and actively stepped down from the limelight to let other players get time to shine. He became a really good friend of mine, too. We've even collabed to make characters, since he's a numbers guy and I'm an artist. You're only an asshole if you refuse to change. Bard in the last story is absolutely an asshole, kudos to the friend group for sticking it out for so long, but it was definitely for the best that they killed that campaign and (hopefully) dropped that asshole as a friend.

As a beginning DM, i dropped this in my first campaign: we're playing a campaign in Eberron. If you want something that's not native to that setting, you may try to write it in in a way that fits the world and i'll allow it. If i find your build on a minmax website, the character is banned. If you wanna play homebrew, run it by me. Several people took me up on this. For example writing a mage build into an empty part of the map to fit the specific type of magic user he wanted into the setting. Another used a flavor swap, taking a faerun exclusive race for stats and rewriting it as a subspecies of something available in Eberron. Yet another came with a homebrewed warforged that was if anything a little underpowered but had tons of flavor to it. Now, i happen to come from a background of non-structured roleplay, so managing that all in a dnd setting was not a huge hastle, especially as i made it a requirement that they did the hard work of convincingly writing their custom content into the setting.

Ok I'll give the first story this much: the idea of a PC being the child of the BBEG and maybe becoming a suprise boss fight later in the campaign, in the right context that can really work. That being said... Everything and I mean... EVERYTHING ELSE is a deal breaker! Especially the graphic physical details of an underage character. And when the DM is being as paitent as expected, and trying to get you to understand why it's not going to happen you absolutely don't have a tantrum and call them a bigot or try the "Damn millenials" stuff. Massive red flags and I'm glad that individual had to leave! As for the tale of the toxic bard that just... It sucks all around, I agree with crab. In that situation it sucks to lose a friend but at the same time you don't need people like that as your friends because it's all about them and not about the people around them and that's not how a true friend works. I hope that group found a good replacement down the line and are having fun playing dnd.

Also being op right away is highly ridiculous you need to level up WITH the party not automatically be better than them otherwise there's no point in the party existing at all. How does a chaplain work compared to a sister of battle? They pointed out there's only like 2 classes specifically for girls, battle and silence, and Sisters of Silence are the stronger ones. A self heal alone isn't much to keep track of. I don't know how this game works, hell I don't even know specifically what game it IS. Just Warhammer isn't very specific. But if we're talking the most basic classes, sister of battle sounds like they'd deal with weapons and they basically have a fighter's second win ability. That's, nothing really. That doesn't give the DM ANY work. You can basically just say that character has a bit of extra health. Psychic powers and THE ABILITY TO FLY and whatever the fuck else Bard wanted to be "special" in a game where the DM SPECIFICALLY asks you NOT to be special and to just be as basic as possible is being an ass. Like maybe he doesn't know what the fuck sister of battle is either, and he thinks she's got this super amazing class so he wants one too, but they EXPLAINED to him why she can play that class and how it's a simple class aside from ONE snazzy ability. Assuming she's the only girl in their group, it makes sense when they're being super simple she'd choose the class that literally has sister in it. Like if I was gonna play a game of DnD and the DM was new and asked us to make really simple characters, I would NOT use my changeling shadow sorcerer because WOW is that character the opposite of simple! I'd be like, an evocation wizard or maybe a life cleric. Cause the DM, who without there is NO GAME, specifically asked us to keep it simple. If he doesn't understand what the DM means by "simple" then he could ask for a list of acceptable classes that the DM feels confident he can run. If none of those classes appeal, he can just choose to bow out of this game and come back when the DM feels more secure in running it. You know, like how NOT a cunt would act.

Pretty average stats for a level... 2 I think he was, neutral good and with a nomadic background. He was a little monotone (-1 Charisma), but kind and wanted to forge bonds with people. He loved meeting people and bonding over things. The party met up with him and at that point in the quest, the party were pretty close to the end. He asked them an interesting question. " What happens after you defeat this... enemy of yours? Do you all go your separate ways, forgetting the bonds you've made as friends? Or do you continue as one group until the next adventure comes around? " I like to think I tried to steer away from the "maximum Edgelord Chemical Romance" we get a lot of. Calm, quiet type, but means well and tries to be helpful. Not some demi-god, but useful when dealing with monsters.

Even with point buy or standard array, sure, the highest it gives is a 15, but then you put a racial bonus on it, so he should've been able to start with a 16 or 17, which would be pretty average and okay at low levels. Either he's stupid, or the DM was an asshole and didn't let him reassign his bonus to the relevant stat. Uhhhhhhhhhh, have you never even WATCHED DnD? At low levels, a 15 in charisma is, JUST fine. Like 17 is functionally identical to 16, so even mentioning it is redundant, but 16 isn't the BARE MINIMUM for a Bard. Bards at low levels, CAN HAVE LOW STATS. If you CANNOT play a bard with less than 16 charisma at level ONE, then your DM is dogshit at balancing his games, bring it up to him and help him fix it. What does the rogue who has 15 dex just fail EVERY dex check they make? What fantasy world are YOU living in where less than 16 just makes a build UNPLAYABLE? Even at a roleplay HEAVY table? What the ACTUAL fuck is wrong with your games? Anyway, moving on, he said the BIGGEST problem with Bard's.... well bard, is that ALL he'd do is put the enemies to sleep. The Sleep spell IS NOT EFFECTED BY ANY OF YOUR STATS. You roll dice to determine HP the spell effects. There's no attack rolls, there are no saving throws. Even if he was only casting charm person adding ONE to the save DC will not suddenly make him the best bard ever. An unlucky roll is an unlucky roll, having a plus 2 or a plus 3 to your FOUR isn't going to swing things massively in your direction. If every DC your DM sets just so happens to be ONE higher than every fucking roll your Bard makes, then I hate to break it to you, but your DM just hates you.

Those people instead of considering why something was done just assume they have western culture. Then try to justify their bad takes with their made up idea of what is correct.

You can still make a cute character and have them be under age. I made an Astral Self Monk character and she's a 10 year old girl. She has an interesting backstory and personality, and her monk subclass actually works with her diminutive size and strength to explain how she can punch things to death. She summons astral arms to fight, so it doesn't matter how weak her actual arms are. Even with that in mind, cause it's more fun, instead of just ending it at "Oh her astral arms punch really hard" I decided even her astral arms don't hit THAT hard, but they CAN move very fast. So each 1 point of damage I translate as a single punch, so if she deals like 14 damage she belts out 14 separate punches in like a second. Fun and unique, with just the right amount of anime. She's normally the more stoic, serious type, but she also has a more girly side that's super cute. This character isn't creepy at all, cause she's also NOT A MASSIVE SLUT! You know cause she's TEN. No, my massive slut is the busty earth genasi bard........ I swear it's just a coincidence that she's a bard.

I remember being in a D&D 3.5 group with a friend of a friend. I had a well-known character build that I had used throughout the years, and I was playing him again in this game. He's a personality; he does grappling, acrobatics, and improvised weapon shenanigans. I had a lot of fun trying to bust out fun, creative moves with him that would mess around with the DM's encounters and engage them in a fun way. This friend of a friend, though, seemed like they had Main Character syndrome. They had good RP skills; but it was always just... reacting to things and talking about things from their backstory that they remembered and how weighty and significant everything was. Very much telling and not showing. When it came time to cash the checks our mouths had written, they just always seemed to come up with insufficient funds. Don't get me wrong, character development RP can be great, but it's annoying when we're trying to fight a battle. Whenever we were trying to fight our way through a dungeon, they would always be slowing us down with drawing the spotlight over to themselves and monologuing about how things tied to their backstory. That's bad enough when there are six players and you're trying to keep a turn rhythm going, but they would get so salty, too. They would complain when I did something cool, saying that it wouldn't work like that. (I pride myself on making sure the moves I come up with actually followed game mechanics properly, and the DM never had an issue with them.) At one point, they were trying to have some kind of Naruto flashback resolve-building moment in the middle of a dungeon and kept calling attention away from other players in combat (idk, they just don't really listen) and I just cut in and went back to what I was doing. And they BLEW UP at me like "WHY CAN'T YOU JUST LET ME DO SOMETHING!? I WANT TO BE COOL LIKE YOU GUYS! I WANT THE STORY TO BE ABOUT ME FOR ONCE! I WANT TO BE SPECIAL!" I just shrugged and said "THEN DO SOMETHING. Don't tell us how special you are, BE special! Cool people do cool things." I felt like it made sense, but I think they were just mad that they had focused too much on how cute of an anime girl their character was rather than what the character was actually capable of. They stormed out of the game.

As someone that did play a 16 year old magical girl (celestial warlock) in one campaign, that first story lady is insane. But then my character was made as a parody while hers was made to be played straight. I was really proud of what I did with this character ^_^ See, I got the idea for her while looking over the races list and learning that half orcs are officially fully grown by 14. So what would happen if a 16 year old half orc with a body type considered beautiful by orc standards was bestowed magic powers to do battle with the forces of evil? Thus Pretty Princess Vladamir was created.

Do you actually know how a sister of battle WORKS or do you just think the name sounds cool? I have no idea what that class is, but it sounds like, a fighter from DnD. Like they've got a self heal, they're "of battle" so I assume they're primarily brawlers. Sounds like a basic ass fighter. Meanwhile he's like "I want crazy psychic powers" then he's like "Ok I want a JET PACK THEN" If you don't think a jet pack is that complicated, the ability to FLY can BREAK a game unless you're REALLY attentive. New DMs REALLY struggle with flying characters unless they just, turn flying off in every area that's important. Which of course just means the players are having less fun. A character that can fly out of the gate is SUPER overpowered. In DnD there's a race called Aarakocra, they're bird people and of course, they can fly. They're considered a SUPER powerful race, EXCLUSIVELY because they can fly at level 1. That's it, their other abilities DON'T MATTER cause they can fly. They can't fly in heavy armor, BUT THAT DOESN'T MATTER BECAUSE THEY CAN FLY. DMs should NEVER allow their players to make characters that can fly right off the bat unless they KNOW they're creative and hard working enough to compensate for it. This goes for even EXPERIENCED DMs, NEW DMs should just NEVER allow it for any reason. Players can learn the fly spell at level 5, they can FUCK OFF until then with flying and breaking the world. Either way, he should either have asked for a list of classes he feels comfortable running, or just dipped out of that game and asked to be called back when he felt more comfortable running more complex classes, because those are the ones most fun for him. That would've been FINE. Or how about this? HE should've asked if he could be a sister of battle too! He could even make a cool backstory in tandem with the other sister of battle. Now he gets the heal ability, which seriously just sounds like second wind, it's NOT that big a thing, and he also gets roleplay potential with another player. Like NOTHING about that post implied every character HAD to pick a different class. Actually by the sound of it he'd PREFER to have duplicate classes, cause that's one less class he needs to keep track of!

@@insertedgynamehere He's a NEW DM. Do you know what that means? It means he's taking the effort to learn a very complex system FULL of potentially hundreds of variables, and that's just classes. Becoming a dungeon master is a HUGE undertaking. It's REALLY hard and requires an IMMENSE amount of work and time investment. If you've got a new DM and he's telling you he's not very comfortable with the more complicated classes, DON'T PICK ONE OF THEM! Give him time to acclimate himself. The players aren't the only ones playing, the DM is a player too, and their fun is also important. VERY fucking important, because they're running the damn game.

sometimes you ask for simpler classes so you can learn the ropes and how everyone plays together. especially if no one's a veteran player, the more complex classes can be a lot to keep track of for player and GM alike.

Started binging some of these videos earlier this afternoon, and it's kinda getting me in the groove to take another shot at D&D. Previous attempts have been squandered due to my own shite mental state, but listening to these videos is sort of an inspiration of what *not* to do.. if that makes any sense?? I think the next opportunity I'll get, I'll sit down with a couple of my more seasoned D&D friends and write up a character for myself and try to join a game. If it ever goes anywhere, I might come back and update this.
