While I have had campaigns die due to life events moving people away from each other, or causing insurmountable schedule conflicts, I have never personally experienced anything approaching most of the stories you cover. At most, we would have someone create 1 bad session, after which they would get a 1-on-1 with the DM. Their behaviors would be listed, along with ways to correct it, and they would be given the choice to either shape up, or ship out. It's a system that, to my direct knowledge, has never failed. 🤠👍

Im sure that she won't want to replace her bow (she's already demonstrated, in character, actual loyalty for it) , but im hoping i can bait her into submitting it for examination to, perhaps, be custom enchanted. All so i can reveal that its actually developed magical properties as a result of her loyalty and bond with it.

My group tends to have a simple method to keep a "main character" in check, since someone will inevitably catch fire when their concept gels with a setting: make them earn it. They're interacted with more, tested more, actually have to lead the action directly rather than by coincidence, and by the end of any campaign, they're naturally the ones we all rally around, and end up making sure we interact more exactly to keep us from all just being side characters. Legends are made, not born.

Okay, some of the edge lord transformations could work with tweaks. The righteous Paladin could have faced an enemy that honor alone was impossible to defeat, the fact that he held to his morals meant many died a needless death. That fear of weakness was exploited by the entity, and cruelly morphed into a mindset of total victory at any cost. The freedom loving character could simply be turned chaotic evil, where they desire to spread "freedom" no matter who it may harm. Essentially becoming an avatar of pure anarchy. Basically, make the antagonistes be very clearly corrupted by a higher being. There deepest desires and fears used to twist them into something unrecognizable. They think they are the heros in their own twisted way. Also remove the targeted attack on OP.

After YEARS of this (long-runner game), I finally explained all this and the players told me they wanted my character to do and guide MORE, not less. Relief combined with "Yes, I'm an idiot!" ensued.

So only sort of related but this story got me thinking it might be interesting to do a few sessions in a campaign with doppleganger bizzaro counterparts to your party. It would have to be done properly and respectfully of course, you'd probably have to plant the seeds of it early on maybe even in a session zero kinda thing, but I think there might be some potential there. I might just be thinking this because our DM recently introduced some of our previous campaigns characters as NPC's since they left off in the same place our new party started.

"If she's not leaving in tears, you are a failure to your peers." Something my husband and I live by when we play anything that puts us on opposite teams. I refuse to let him actually use one specific model when we play warhammer, always nuking it in the first turn, and then he turns around and just wipes my battle sister squads off the table. Any game of cards, you can bet we're going to pick on each other. Hell, even when we're on the same team in shooters we sometimes turn and shoot each other up a little bit. He straight up got me kicked out of an among us lobby after also having me shot into the vacuum of space during the game, just for kicks and giggles.

The weapon destruction/recovery part reminds me of a fantasy-themed forum I used to be a part of 13-ish years ago. We had a hierarchy based on contributions and activity on the forum which was mirrored by power levels of our PCs/avatars. It was not D&D based but you could compare, say, newcomers to lvl 1-2 characters, veteran active members to 10-ish, and so on up to admin (AKA Grand Master in our setting) power level of 20. At some point we started doing co-op writing of our adventures with each of us obviously writing from the POV of their respective avatar. One of the few rules was: you couldn't be more powerful in those adventures than your forum rank indicated. One of our members, a relative newcomer was also the baby of the bunch. He was 15 or 16 when the vast majority of members were in their 20s with a few odd 30-40 yo's. He was a super-anime-otaku obviously molded by shonen genre (hey, I'm a fan too just not obsessed with it). So whenever he was describing his PCs competence in combat you could expect a Bleach/SAO level of fencing mastery whereas his PC would at that point be an equivalent to a level 3 fighter (sorry, samurai, duh!). It quickly became a running gag amongst our group that after each paragraph of his stock-shonen-protagonist shenanigans someone else's character (whoever's turn was it to write) woke him up from a dream on a claim of "you were again shouting and twitching through your sleep, seriously dude get some calming herbs!" before getting the story back on track. Sure, initially the guy was annoyed that we invalidated his feats just like that but eventually he did get the message and started asking me (I was always on good terms with him despite being the biggest "wakener" and mocker of his achievements) for writing advice that I happily gave him: I explained the importance of hero's journey, power scaling, and all the good classic tropes (hey, you need to know your basics BEFORE you start subverting). Eventually he grew both as a writer and as a valuable member of our community. When the forum imploded because of a bunch of toxic assholes taking over as admins and their lackeys (I'm no snowlake so I don't throw that word lightly but I draw the line at provoking self-harm to someone with crippling depression, crazy, IKR?) he was one of the few I kept in touch with for several years afterwards. Eventually, as it's common in life, our ways parted permanently, but I still treasure this guy's memory and growth from a hopeless teen fanfic-maker to a blossoming writer with some hidden potential. He was my apprentice if I ever had one (even called him a padawan both IC and jokingly OOC).

This is a reason why I absolutely avoid having a dmpc character in a game and avoid bringing a RL relationship late into a game. It undercuts the expectations and experiences of the other players as well as your partners. When you make it easier for them to enjoy. The entire idea of pitting players old characters against these newer ones I’d admit does sound appealing if it’s done correctly and have some thought put into the previous characters backstories (like having a character fixated at bring back a loved one and willing to go down that darker path to accomplish it) but my feelings is Serra didn’t much care about that and wanted this huge power goddess trip that the simp of a dm was oh to willingly provide. To have characters simply be edgelords or take a complete 180 in their character is just terrible writing and just makes it feel cheesy if that’s not the tone everyone was going for. Half this party seems to not understand what amorality is and be on a moral crusade. I’m feeling most this party is just fawning over what ever hill Serra is soapboxing about and just going far out on left field. Plus I’m going out on a limb as why is the party so fixated at bringing down ops character and the just toxic us vs them mentality Serra has is terrible. Destroying a player’s items just to prove a pissing contest point of this being tuff and ooooh it’s serious bruh. Just makes you look like an insufferable ass. But yes the best response if godmodding is off the table and your dm girlfriend is getting all high and mighty is just tell them No.

The changes to Lima and Echo are when I would have walked out of the campaign on the spot. I can see a cleric of love getting manipulated in that direction but adding on Echo’s changes…just nope. I don’t care if a character is designed with scars and sado-masochism, but turning a free spirited character into that overnight, even with the player’s approval, goes well beyond simple manipulation and possession would bring, especially without a half-decent explanation. And the biggest joke is how the already free spirited character becomes less free spirited for the sake of….freedom.

I want to say this after mulling The Steel Fist's motives. They're basically the defense of Megatron's morality from Transformers in the Aligned Continuity. If no one knows, the Aligned Continuity was meant to make a streamlined Transformers Universe. In this universe, Megs was morally grey and leaned more to the dark than light. But this is flawed because Megatron chose violence because he "felt betrayed by Optimus (Orion Pax at the time)". There's a hypocrisy the Aligned Continuity makes when trying to adapt the ruthless Megatron we know into a morally grey person.

Im hysterically laughing at king crab saying that the only way to maintain the power balance is to bully your partner. My partner and I run a guild and take turns DM-ing for the same group and honestly, to an extent this is kinda what we do to make sure that fairness is maintained. We've talked about it and agreed to like safety-tool-like terms for it so it doesn't ruin us but we antagonize eachother more than we do any other players and make sure to share time, resources and attention equally with everyone while playing the respective games. If we wanna be all lovey dovey and gross we can do that in our free time. Nobody wants to be the third wheel and subjecting multiple people to that at once is gross.

So far, definitely some red flags and rookie DM behavior here, and yeah, it’s shitty to sideline players in favour of a SO, but honeymoon periods do end. Hearing this, I am super aware that this is only one side of the story. I actually kind of like the idea of splitting a massive party and have half do a heel-turn, especially with a party of what? 10!? And edge-lord stuff can be fun if it’s done with self awareness and especially since they became the literal bad guys. And their issues with OP’s character? That just sounds like fun conflict to me, does OP suddenly not want the attention? Yeah, their moral logic is flawed but they are literally being the bad guys. I don’t really get OP’s issue with this.😅 Right now, it seems like a lot of the players were having fun, and OP was being a bit of a stick in the mud and getting IC and OOC stuff confused. But I’m only through 1 of 4 videos about this issue, so I will reserve judgment until the end.

My character gets too close to something out of curiosity? Bam! Its a slime, she gets enveloped and now is suffocating. Walking innocently? Bam! Face hugger bats attack her and one other player. Ngl, I feel like OP is probably more at fault than he lets on. First red flag is playing 40k Batman in a fantasy setting. It's just about as cringe as playing an anime character or a S&M body modder. A lot of his mentions of being "specifically targeted" by Sierra, just seem like roleplay scenarios that he fumbled. Like "Oh no, the villains of this campaign destroyed this largely symbolic dagger that my character didn't need for combat and specifically singled me out as the their direct ideological counterpart. This is godmoding and I'm going to immediately retcon it at the table." Like, that's a real softball plot hook that he just whiffed completely. For a guy who goes onto say that he was more concerned with story than minmaxing, that makes me raise an eyebrow. Also "railroaded their relationship at my expense" is real hater energy. Reading some subtext here, it seems like OP was initially trying to create a partnership in game with Sierra and got pissy at her when she decided she wanted to RP romance with the dude she was actually dating. Just saying. Don't think OP is that much better than the girl he's dunking on.

I know that everything can happen in life, but this story feels kind of made up or at least altered to make it more interesting to read. At least with the dagger situation, there should have been more interaction with the DM or other players, it probably got boiled down to the main conflict, between op and the gf, to make it look like op won on his own, but he was probably not the only one not ok with the situation or he would have been over ruled.
