Cringe Explained

Well hello there! In this video, I hope to give a brief overview of our scientific understanding of embarrassment and cringe, which, as you may have guessed, isn't the most scientific of terms. You might call it vicarious embarrassment. So what causes cringe? Is cringe a good or a bad thing? Let's explore, while watching some cringe.

Classic clip of Chris (from Westchester County, as he insists on telling us), the flat earther who once claimed he was 'being followed' by helicopters, whilst parked between two of the busiest heliports in the world. I think it there's a distinction between cringe the verb and cringe the noun. Cringe (the noun) is a subset of embarrassment. Cringe is when someone does something embarrassing without realizing they're embarrassing themselves. It must be earnest and self-inflicted. If the person is aware of the embarrassment (ex: slipping on a banana peel) or the embarrassment is being brought on by someone else (i.e. being tricked without realizing it) then it's not Cringe. Rebecca Black's "Friday" is one of the greatest examples of Cringe. It's really bad, but she seems completely oblivious to that fact in the video. Larry David's characters are intentional Cringe. Watching someone trip and fall is awkward, perhaps even second-hand embarrassment. You will probably cringe as a reaction, but the act you are cringing at at is itself not Cringe.

One of the things that has always stuck with me when thinking about witnessing an embarassing moment or just seeing pure cringe, the fact that we respond very similar to gettign the sensation of living through that is telling of how much we have evolved our sense of compassion. Or at least, learning to assimilate and understand other members of our species. That the cognitive evolution in humans is also shown in situations like this that is mostly a reaction as a witness

Thanks once again Georg for your insight. Cringe--well I personally feel it if I ever look back into my own past at some shit I did 3 minutes ago when I was still immature, and I feel it deeply in my stomach and chest and entire psyche and then I don't sleep well for 3 nights (or 30 years) because of deep and recurring social rejection nightmares etc etc. When looking at others I tend to think "ok that was a bit embarrassing but you're human and we aren't perfect so there you go" kind of thing. Kindness to others, but goodness I wish we could be that kind to ourselves. May I mention how meta you got at the end there, asking for patrons. You deserve to be paid, no cringe in asking for money even if you are British. I feel immense cringe that I enjoy your work and haven't yet paid you for it.
