I saw Being There in a theater in Boston when it was released in early 1980. The film blew my young mind to smithereens. When the credits rolled, I saw something I have never seen before: a blooper reel that connected to a missing scene that likely fell on the cutting room floor. I was amazed. The film lived in my head for weeks and months. When the video came out, I was so disappointed to see that the blooper bit had been removed. Still, I watched it over and over... longing for that original post-scriptum. I didn't receive an explanation for the change in the editing of the credit sequence until around 10 years ago when I read a book of interviews of Hal Ashby in which he mentioned the incident and the fact that Sellers was furious with him for doing this, but mostly AFTER he had been passed over for the Oscar. I totally disagree that his being snubbed had anything to do with the edit, which you describe as a "tonal shift". I think the reason he was passed over is simply that the film, which mostly bombed on release, was too subtle, too brilliant, too magical, to find its audience in real time. Being There was up against a batch of powerful films that were far better suited to the Zeitgeist: China Syndrome, Apocalypse Now, Breaking Away, Norma Rae... Hoffman ended up winning Best Actor for the divorce movie "Kramer VS Kramer"... Chance didn't stand a chance. The 1970s were winding down, and audiences were dumbing down. That more than anything was the reason why the film failed to make its impact. It's also the reason why a film like Forest Gump did so well a decade later: it is nowhere near as deep as Being There - and nowhere near as profound an allegory. As an aside, Melvin Douglas did win Best Supporting Actor for Being There which is another reason why the suggestion that the film had been derailed by its end credits is absurd. Oscars both reward correct and popular characterization, and/or, people who are at death's door. Oscars never address genius in their midst. Never. I would have to find the Ashby interview in question but my approximate recollection was that he had felt inspired to let some air out of the tire at the end, right at the moment people get up out of their seat and go back into the world, generally paying no attention to the credits. The whole "Tell that A-hole Raphael" speech was a missing arc in the film, since there had been a build-up to it on the street, and it was obviously scripted and shot with an intention to use the gag. I think Ashby probably felt like winking at the audience for whatever reason, and remind them that the entire film was allegorical. A play. Now, people can debate forever whether or not the tone was wrong, and they can compare both versions, but I don't think it is true that the film is saved or sunk either way. End credits in a film are often ignored or bypassed by a return to chaos as the audience exists its own state of hypnosis and Ashby, perhaps in a moment of pointed, or misguided nuttiness which he later regretted under pressure, may have wanted to take control of that chaos. Sellers was a mad bugger and quite an ego-maniacal one at that and had he won the Oscar, he may never have complained about it at all. Nor might have anyone else. The hunger for statuettes has distorted more than one perception about the worth of a film... Being There is a masterpiece and masterpieces are generally unrecognized in their own time: that's the nature of genius. If by the credit roll, someone's impression of the picture is still on shaky ground, I'd suggest that the credits are not the issue. Incidentally, as I mentioned, in 1980, I had never seen bloopers used in a credit sequence; it has been repeated a million times since -- that's another feature of masterpieces that have been shunned in their own time: they spawn copycats -- generally of far lesser quality.

Only $13 million for illegally dumping cancerous chemicals AFTER they knew genx was just as bad as pfoa.. GENX btw is on your toothbrush bristles.. for life you’ve been brushing it into your mouth and also flossing those bloody gums with it. Cancer was a rare thing before the 1950s and suddenly it exploded by something like 1000%.

I have a Republican acquaintance who believes wholeheartedly that climate change is a hoax perpetrated by *them* to do *something* (he's never been able to make a coherent argument about what anti climate change measures are doing for *them* aside from extremely vague stuff about money and control). This dude can come up with a ton of arguments about why global warming is bullshit based off of the flimsiest evidence that he gets off of right-wing news outlets (despite his claim that all the news is biased) or anecdotal evidence but any evidence to the contrary is somehow bullshit at face value. I almost got him once with the fact that Exxon, a company that has a vested interest in saying climate change is fake, paid for a study that proved there was a correlation between human activity and climate change and then covered up the facts, he was stumped for a minute, and then as we continued to debate he just moved on without doing anything to rebut my argument and evidence and eventually said *I* was brainwashed. This shit is fundamentally antithetical to critical thinking and logic. It's genuinely frightening to see how broken thinking just becomes second nature to people who get into conspiracy theories.

"You could have gotten cancer from anywhere!" Yeah, from one of the other 10 companies who also manufacture their version of PFAS and other toxic materials/mediums. I say, we sue them all at the same time! Just - don't do it like Congress did with the tobacco industry. They sold out and made it impossible to stop tobacco manufacturers from continuing to poison everyone, including non-smokers, with toxic and even radioactive chemicals and other poisons. Do it better than Congress did!

This is such a richly detailed movie. I feel one could do thesis work on it. One of my favorite details is the elevator that no longer makes it to the floor, but opens the door with three or four feet to go. The whole society that is only functioning just enough is brilliantly captured in this one detail...how he just hoists himself out so matter of factly is brilliant.

Musk is Trump for Millennials. They follow the same conman rules: 1. Always appear confident and successful, no matter how much you need to lie and steal to do so. People always believe someone who is confident and appears successful. 2. Always vehemently attack any critics and criticism, no matter how small. People will be afraid to question what you say. 3. Use the media as your scapegoat, attack dog and for positive PR. Threaten to sue them, if necessary. 4. Threaten to sue everyone, from your mistresses to your construction workers that will never get paid. 5. Lie about how wealthy you are. Make the government pay for your projects. 6. Say whatever you need to say to whoever you’re talking to in the moment. Fans are whoever supports you, no matter how bad they may be.

For me this juxtaposition between the saccharine, overly glossy media & tragic world events is best exemplified by 9/11. I was 15 when it happened, I remember all the major news networks immediately changed their logos to be more patriotic, adding some variation of red, white, & blue. They paused all the commercials. The media ate up the tragedy in the most disgusting way, each network using it to push their brand of political bias. I’d go as far to say that event was the catalyst for the current political divide in the US. I don’t have any definitive proof, but I feel like 9/11 really altered modern news aesthetics & media in a negative way, it emboldened the 24 hour news cycle. And maybe this is just me getting older, but I cannot shake the feeling that we’ve been in a slow decline ever since then, both creatively and culturally. Of course, you cannot blame everything on the event, but there was definitely a shift, at least in my eyes.

Well, what did you expect from unfettered capitalism? The rich are gonna confuse the poor into thinking, "you absolutely CANNOT be happy unless you look like me, sound like me, dress like me, have makeup like me and have the things I have." Cannot count how many times I start a KZread video or Podcast and they interrupt their own shows with no transition to... "HEY I JUST WANNA GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO THE SPONSOR THIS VIDEO, BLUE APRON! --- *tight edit quick cut with a "whoosh" sound effect * "I PERSONALLY LOVE BLUE APRON, USE IT EVERY DAY --- *tight cut again because no one today can do anything longer than 5 - 8 seconds without cutting *" Also the style and especially the editing of today's media is atrocious. It's all tight cuts, sound effect stings (royalty free scraping metal for paranormal shows, and weird high pitched squeals that sound sort of like a trumpet for cooking shows), endless endless cuts to interviews that the people in those interviews were coached to say something just before the cameras started rolling...And people CONTINUE to watch it as if saying, "I love Trash TV!" is a defence. And your reward for this? Most people who watch these shows, online or TV, continually think, "wow what idiots, I'm so much smarter than them!" as they are using a Tesla in its fake self driving mode, on a crowded road, watching the show on their phone, in the drivers seat, while pounding down fast food.... It's astounding.

I think the intent to cheat is there in everybody. But if you're a smart capable person in your field making steady income anyway and cheat to get more, you're a smart guy and can figure out how to not get caught, at least initially. But let's not kid ourselves. A lot of poor people are the kinds of people who frankly aren't that bright. And these people wouldn't be able to identify avenues of cheating where they wouldn't get caught.

Georg, I love your videos, in fact I'm one of your patreon supporters, but I have to admit it's hard for me to understand some of them. Like this one. Partly it's due to language barrier issues (I'm Spanish) but partially too because I don't understand some concepts, mostly those related to rich people doing weird things with their money. For instance, what's the deal with the hospitals owned by a company paying high rents to another company that's related to the first one? Where do these hospitals get to money to pay the rent? From Stewart? What's the business in that? I'd like having some of the points to be explained clearer for those of us unfamiliar with these topics. But keep with the good work anyway!
