My dm has this and for shits and giggles had a god side quest at a 3% chance......we landed on it and the party's actione kinda made it turn to the main campaign because it started a war which was planned since we were meant to protect a runaway king from a vampire orc. This side quest lasted like 3 in game days and so did the main quest war. After getting our wishes from the gods we went to check the aftermath which led us to finding out that the thing we were supposed to kill didnt really die but rather went somewhere else and kinda birthed a beholder god. Without context its super weird and even then i dont have much as i missed the first part where the quest started

I can see some games being established this but only if the group desires a laid back adventure. Like joining an adventure guild to choose between 5 quests on a board for money or such while high level members are off on major quests. It's generally assumed in older editions at least that a lot of major npcs have a few PC levels to get their high level spot assigned. But at the same time boss battles as cut scenes sucks and should be avoided. If a dmpc reinforces and follows combat rules-still sucks but a one off thing can work narratively, but only once and only if following mechanics rather than cut scene.

I don't understand why people think white knighting is going to help you get in a girl's pants. The only time it might improve your chances a tiny bit is if you actually speak up and help out when someone is being a creep. And even then it's not going to improve your chances by much. And I suppose your motivation would be relevant as well. People who help you because they are nice behave differently from people who help you because they want something from you.

Unfortunately, while that very logical point of view may work with you, it doesnt work with everyone. For example there are women out there that would say no when asked and then wonder why the guy asking didnt keep trying... because they want to be chased. Then of course there is the unwritten rule: Its ok to ask a woman out if you're attractive. If you an ugly guy then your advances are creepy, no matter how respectful you are. Hell in this day and age it could much worse for the ugly guy...

  • @emeralddarkness

    @emeralddarkness

    2 жыл бұрын

@@Damalon01 so, genuinely, I really hope you get better, but several points to this: 1. Asking and being told no while someone is secretly hoping you'll ask again does in fact still mean you need to ask! So my point remains essentially unchanged. But while there are girls who do think they are supposed to play those kind of mind games, they will probably end up really disappointed more often than not until they grow up get over it. If you ask and someone says "no" then no means no, and if they want more they can approach you after. "Well some people don't mean it" is not a defense. Some people have old furniture that they give away to friends or leave on the street corner for people to take if they want, but if you break into someone's house and take their tv then "well my friend got his tv because someone gave it to them" is no excuse, because what you did is still theft. The only thing you can do is take someone at their word and earnestly move on. 2. Attractive, rich guys can be just as creepy as unattractive guys, even leaving out that attractiveness can be quite subjective, and in general a lot more of being attractive boils down to self care and confidence than it does genetics. But hey, you know what is much more likely to make you look creepy? Coming on (esp in inappropriate settings) way too strong to women who have not expressed interest in that. If the only thing you are obsessed with is getting some then please find something else to do for yourself. Learn to play guitar, write a book, learn to paint, do something to focus a bit on you. You'll probably be happier, but on top of that, you'll have something to talk *to* women about rather than how much you want to bang them. Fetishizing women who do not explicitly in as many words out loud *ask* to be fetishized is mostly what labels men as creeps.

This is fairly recent, and I won’t go into too much detail about it unless someone REALLY wants to hear it, but my main group recently kicked out our DM. This short story isn’t about us kicking him out, but it was a main reason for the final decision. We had a game that was already being run that was leading into the final few sessions before the final fight, but the DM decided he wanted to make a new world and a new campaign; that wasn’t a big deal at first, we all were going to have fun with another game, but it wasn’t until much later we realized he was making this new world because he was trying to shelf the game we were playing already, which by that point we were a year and a half in to. We asked him numerous times if he’s burnt out in that game, but he always rejected what we said, but we knew it was obvious he didn’t want to do that game anymore, yet for some reason felt it was his “duty” to try and finish it (it “finished” horribly as a result). So in this new campaign, we all started out at Level 1. That was fine. The DM said the game would be a bit of a slow burn. That was fine. What WASN’T fine was staying at Level 1 for *13 SESSIONS* before he finally decided we were worthy of a Level up… _in the middle of a fight with a dragon wyrmling._ To summarize what we did at Level 1 before finally getting to Level 2, we: - Met a “friendly” Lich who saved us from being attacked by and undead god - Had to revive the CLERIC twice, once for the DM not balancing his second encounter, and once for the Cleric being dumb. - Got politically acquainted with the mafia of a town - Were witness and important figures with a meeting between the kings of the world, who would have killed each other if we didn’t intervene - Made an enemy of a god in human form - Made a friend of a god in human form - Learned that the world is a living creature wnd a dying god disguising itself, and the real world is a mess of Eldritch horror - Had Eldritch horrors attack us for no reason - Had the “World” attack us because we were forced to learn about the world being fake - Had our first BBEG boss fight at Level 1/2, and he had LEGENDARY ACTIONS - Had 3 player character’s stories basically come to an end within the first 5-7 sessions, one being mine - Etc., etc. There’s probably more that I’m missing, but the you get the gist. The DM threw WAY TOO MUCH stuff at us for being Level 1, and everyone thought the same thing. It wouldn’t have been as bad if not for the fact he kept introducing DMNPCs who joined the party for… really no reason. We already had one that we were content with, but by the final session before everyone gave their complaints and we restarted before kicking him out, we had 5 DM NPCs in the party, and there were 6 people in the party! We nearly had as many NPCs in the party as plate characters, and one of them was **the king of another nation who just randomly showed up.** Suffice to say, we felt like side characters in that game, and basically told him to either write a book or change his game up. I could go into more detail, but that would make this really long. Hope whoever’s reading this enjoys it!

IMO, if you have a crush on another player in your group, you should avoid any in-game romance role-playing until and unless you get some OUT of game consent to romance. Yes, it is possible to do romantic role play, while being just friends IRL. But if you're struggling with an unreciprocated crush, it's just foolishness to go there, because you may think that "Oh, she really likes me, after all! Look how she played that scene with me," but to her, "It's just fun role play with my good friend!" So, keep your in-game relationships platonic, IF you are crushing, and you don't have any reciprocation in real life. If you get real life reciprocation, go for it. If you have an out-of-game conversation, and admit your crush, and get a "just friends" talk, but the person agrees to have in-game romance, I think that's unwise, because it gives you a tase of something you can't have for real, but the consent is there, so you can do it, if you want. If you have no IRL crush, and both players know, "we're just friends," but you BOTH want to do the in-game romance, for story reasons, and role playing fun, that's fine. Go for it. But to protect your own heart, don't push it, if you are crushing, without addressing it in real life. It leads to problems.

"Consent" to romance...? In my (albeit limited) experience, asking a girl "Excuse me, do I have your consent to romance you?" is not going to lead to good results... The first story reminds me of RP fights that just...wouldn't end. No rolls, all freeform emotes between two powerful PCs, and each one would just keep doing these over the top attacks. Then a OOC argument breaks out. It gets boring. Fast. Second one is just...Sad. Having your friend suddenly turn you into a sexual fantasy and blame you for it is just baffling. And how vapid do you have to be to only be attracted to someone purely because you know their sexual orientation? Third, good ol' macho Nice Guys™! Been a while since I seen those. The attempt to pin the OP as a pedo is extremely gross. Finally, that campaign was doomed to fail from the start: PCs used as errand boys as powerful NPCs and any attempt to break the railroad resulting in heavy punishments is...Why not just write a book at that point? It has just as much interaction. Can't even begin to guess what the OP did to that brand new player to earn his ire to the point of conspiring to kill his PC. What a mess. Been binging on these videos (and others). Keep up the good work!

Also had the players in my group organize a private group (with the DM included ) where they planned to mess up my character because they didn't like the way I was playing, instead of just talking to me. And even when I was almost in tears and had to go outside for a breather after the gang up the instigator followed me outside to essentially make sure I'd learnt my lesson and then to make me to apologize to him. This is also the same person who tried to make a mentally ill and girl with clinical anxiety and severe social phobia apologize to him for giving her a panic attack. Instead of being like are you ok, he told her she was embarrassing him in front of his friends and she needed to apologize publicly to them and then to him. He then cut her out of the friend group. Shockingly I am no longer friends with these people.

I'm a librarian and DM for a group of 11 and 12 y/os so I do sometimes use DMPCs when it seems like the group is new, but DMPCs should always play a sideline, encouraging role. My DMPCs are essentially invisible in decision making and I leave them behind when it seems a group is getting comfortable RPing and playing in the world. Why would you even make a whole game just to sit down and hog all the story to yourself. That's just uncomfortable.

Tip for lonely people crushing on a D&D player: Join the game, by all means. And then, impress the crush with your awesome teamwork and playing skills. Do NOT engage in erotic role play with them. Don't do erotic role play, at all. Just do regular role play, engaging with the whole party, and helping the other players to have their chance to shine. Playing a great support player is great! Then, out of game, be up front. "I like you. I'd like to get to know you better, in real life. May I take you out on a date?" YES, use the word DATE. If she says yes, you know that you are allowed to get romantic with her. If she accepts "dinner" but you haven't said "date," then she may very well think you're just palling around, just like in game, only instead of your characters being friends, you're trying to be a real life friend, with your own self and her own self. If you're upfront about "I'm interested romantically," you can't get "friend-zoned." You may be turned down, and get the "just friends" talk, but you won't get "friend-zoned," where the Nice Guys complain about how "I put in all the friendship tokens, and didn't get the sex out of the female vending machine!" Now, I know a lot of you are thinking, "If I play this great support character, and I'm all about teamwork, how will I impress the woman with my manly manliness, and make her want me, sexually?" I have news for you. Many, if not most, women LOVE a team player, supportive man, who makes them feel SAFE. Safe and supported. If they're looking for husband material, they're not looking for a white knight. They're looking for someone who will support them in their career, and help with the laundry, while saying, "I love you. Your pregnant body glows with inner beauty, and I think your waddle is adorable." Some women don't, but truly, the odds are in your favor. Wise women want to marry their best friend.

Honestly I could get behind this sort of setup with some tweaks. Mainly: 1. There's no real reason the PCs need to watch DMPCs fight for 30+ minutes irl time. If the DM wants to convey how larger than life these background heroes are they can do it with rumors and the like or describing the aftermath of a fight somewhere. Smaller scale heroes can still be just as if not more entertaining to follow even if Superman is out there somewhere punching giant meteors into dust. 2. The harsh and absurd punishments for player agency.

Actually, a cool story is when the protagonist is the "little guy," who is never given a chance to do anything major, and just told to do "chores" for the "big guys" who are "doing the important stuff," and yet, still manages to save the day, with his "little chores," that "don't have any meaning," only, it turns out that they actually do. For example, the big guy is in charge of forging an alliance with a foreign nation. They does the wining and dining with the other nation's Big Guy, while the "Little Guy" is busy doing chores and little tasks, such as "Help out the damsel in distress," who actually turns out to be the Big Guy's beloved X (could be mistress, illegitimate daughter, god-daughter, pet, etc.) and thus HE clinches the deal, whereas the Big Guy was just boring him. BUT, if you're going to do that as a GAME, you have to be VERY careful how you do it. I think it would work much better as a novel.

I heard that premise of the last story, and my brain immediately tried to fix it... like the party needs to investigate an evil npc, or track down a powerful artifact in hostile territory, and the most feasible way of getting there alive is by traveling with and/or joining the army, for safety in numbers. The dm could spotlight national heroes/generals in the army camp (who the players would eventually replace/overshadow as they level up/gain a reputation), and the campaign would be a blend between joining battles in strategic/key roles, doing odd jobs for the army as they push forward into enemy territory, and investigating clues to lead the party to the evil npc/macguffin on their own.

About the last story... I had a similar idea years ago, with powerful NPCs and not-as-powerful PCs. The main difference was that it was based on the videogame "Super Robot Wars", and basically ALL the giant robots in the game were across the galaxy, fighting horrible creatures like, say, the Space Monsters from Gunbuster - which left only some Federation pilots, genius kids and overall good guys to man the home front. Because let's be honest, Char Aznable or Dr. Hell aren't going to take a vacation because Amuro Rei or Koji Kabuto are at several light years of distance. The player would be the rookies tasked with keeping the world intact until the heroes were back (and, for those who haven't seen Gunbuster, the trip back to Earth could take CENTURIES, unless a solution is found!) So, yeah - extra awesome NPCs, but they would only be seen or heard in side scenes. The role of heroes and defenders of Earth would be on the shoulders of the players.

The last story is kind of funny to me, because I was recently listening to some advice about how the PCs in a campaign should always be the ones doing the cool and exciting stuff, while all the boring chores should either: a) be handled by NPCs or b) handled off-screen. Somehow, this DM decided the opposite should be true, and the NPCs should do all the cool stuff while the PCs are left with the boring drudgery. Just some A+ game-mastering right there.

To answer your opening question, I was once in a PVP combat in a Medi-Fantasy RP sim in Second Life (SL) that was about 10 minutes of combat in game, but took 8 hours to play out. It was a great RP sim and fun combat and story line but it did start to drag after a few hours. BTW, SL RP sims are usually PVP (because programming monsters is hard and resource-intense) and most of the action happens with no GM present, although we did have GM for this fight.

That intro story sounds like a DM that wasn't very experienced & likened TTRPGs to JRPGs, where the point is to grind and level up and where all combats except for big set pieces aren't designed to be interesting, but to be walking bags of experience points. I've been guilty of this myself, but on the opposite end, where I accidentally made the PCs too powerful too quickly, and every big fight of 2 men versus 100+ gnolls was over super-quick (we were using 3.5 & the rules for Greater Cleave in that system are written in such a way that you can basically say that you can continue attacking enemies as long as you kill what you're attacking). In that case, the players felt like huge badasses while I struggled wondering how to create any challenge for them, but it was my first time, so I understand what the issue was & haven't done anything like it in the few times I have DMed in the ten years since, but I kinda get it. This DM just needs more experience and understanding. For that last story, since the player & DM want to kill the PC and not kick the character, I think it'd be interesting if, instead of his character dying & him leaving the game, if OP made a new character that was just a dark brooding edgelord that doesn't want anything to do with the party but goes along with them because he has to by orders of the army. Then he can sit back and let them make decisions, see how poorly that goes. Or even see if the newbies are the ones running the show, and see how they choose for the story to move; I kind of have to wonder if at least the one that wants OP's character dead is working with the DM to move the story based on how the DM wants it to go. The game feels like a way for the DM to worldbuild for his novel by making his players do a lot of the work for him, and by going against ideas that he has for how his book is supposed to go, he's punishing the players. For example, that questgiver was probably supposed to die during the fight with the demons, or at least get injured; I could see a plotpoint in the book being that the DM's characters find her corpse or find her gravely wounded, and swear revenge against the demons since she was a friend of one of theirs or something like that, but because that didn't happen exactly how the DM thought it should, he punished the players for it, which is a terrible way to DM a game. That character can still die or be injured in your book without it being due to them fighting these baby demons, the game & the novel can have different storylines, no one who reads the book will ever know. But because that character HAS to die or be injured for the story you have in mind to move forward, if it doesn't happen, punish the players for ruining the story you planned out, rather than come up with something different between sessions or whatever.

As someone who occasionally runs quick lone combats to test how well certain characters I've made handle stuff, I've gotta say... rolling against yourself is freaking boring. just roll, roll, roll, roll, roll *dead* good. Why would someone write an entire campaign where they're playing a group of NPC's fighting other NPC's while the players have to shut up and watch you play alone?

Ah yes, the 4+ hour fight. The BBEG boss fight I designed was one of those. Had 3 phases with lower damage output until the last phase. Each phase also had battlefield mechanics that the players COULD use to help survive easier, but were not required to technically kill it. This should only be used for game ending fights in my opinion, and is honestly difficult to make it feel entertaining the entire fight.

Regarding the question at start? Yes. Many times. Mostly an Eberron game that I left when another olayer (who now plays in the game I run) said they were also having issues with the game. Wont go over all those. The other was the oathfinder game I’ve mentioned leaving. The DM decided to have a mini boss of a Oaladin Lich(graveknight) made of the character he had played in my Icewind Dale game. Okay, maybe a little derailing until we were forced into this war type fight. He has a ton of undead, as to be expected. And also, a… mindflayer? Which doesn’t exist in Pathfinder’s setting. Meaning he bullshited a mindflayer in. Im currently a merfolk in a wheelchair right now, so I can only move in straight lines. First turn, I manage to do something, a Wall of Fire. But next turn, the lich has made Ice walls so I can’t see anything (thus forcing me to drop my spell), and he angled it so the only straight line I can do is, into a barrel. Which I can’t crawl out of my chair and over. So the only way to move is the soend an entire action (so, basically my full turn) using my tail to kick the barrel a bit so I can move a tiny bit more. Then the mind flayer screeches in the party. And only I fail it essentially since the Fighter manages to still get turns because of his Robo-Arm. Now, does a stun last a round like 5e? Nope. It’s 2d4. DM rolled 7. Meaning SEVEN ROUNDS I am stunned and unable to talk, move, or do anything at all. What’s worse, the only way to undo it? A spell that is a cleric only soell. Guess what, I’m the only cleric in the party at the moment, who is also the weakest oarty member from being reincarnated, changed to an archetype that favors Dex based clerics (I was Str and Wis based with Cha and Dex as my dump stats), and so I got to do 2 things in the entire 6 hour session. That’s literally it. Between the dm sharing some private art I had not consented to him showing the party (it was an nsfw piece I won off Twitter of my character and showed him in good faith), using an op item to not only kill, but MYTILATE my cleric (actively going out of his way to describe his dmpc boss beheading me and having the head roll away from my collapsed body), his screwy wild magic bs of 10000 results for 10 gold, his “custom” reincarnation table (hence my merfolk situation), sending an entire guild after me like a criminal because I mentioned an android while at work and answering him, and then that bs stun lock? I am surprised I stayed another, about 10-15 sessions

The very first comment does not mention what edition game they were playing. If it was AD&D, then it's possible the DM had rolled the number of monsters. For example, in AD&D, if you rolled orcs, the number appearing was 3-300. I can actually remember rolling that my players were being chased by over 250 Orcs one night. That was the first time that the players were truly scared of Orcs... But they got to have running skirmishes and then escape. But no matter what edition... against so many opponents, I have to wonder why the Player's party didn't try to run? It's entirely believable that you can run into groups of enemies that outnumber you badly enough that if you have any sense... you'll run.

The thing with the players being the B-Party could work if done right. Like they are being sent out by the "Hero-Party" to do their jobs for them while the heroes take the fame for it. Or the players are sent out to do the shady dirty work for the heroes, so they can keep their hands clean. But in both cases there should be a role reversal where eventually the players overtake the heroes that are using them.

As a DM (running a campagne for a really good group of friends- we even went on holiday tougether) I feel responsible for geving everyone a chance to shine. There is a dwarf cleric (my partner irl), human barberian (she desn't care that much for rules but- she doesn't break them or anything and noone really minds-), human ranger , half-elf ranger and a humen figher (pretty shy guy irl). Barberian and human ranger are best friends but as they would talk out of character I asked them to sit apart- solved an issue. We make 2-3 breaks during 3 hours game for me to prep and everyone can talk during this time. Back to the topic- I was really scared as my cleric bf took sort of a leader position in a group and I didn't want to seem unfair also as he has a high perception good with religion- both very usufull in the setting. I just wrote down all of characters skills, marked who is best in different areas and do my best to desing the game in the way that everyone would be good at sth- solving certen puzzels, history checks, charisma, strenght etc. Bwt- the smartes ones in the group are homebrew rat construct and half-elves pseudodragon. I just feel that DMs seeing the game and group dynamic from a different point of view whould do their best to make everyone feel important and help to work out any issues. I must say- I have the best possible group of players I could wish for. Any in game tensin is just that- character in game and not people irl. If sb makes a stupid decision that leads to certen consequences it stays in game and we may lough about it later on but there were no personal issues.

Using a game for novelization is a cool idea, but you have to do it right. 1) Record the sessions. 2) Let the players play their characters and make their choices 3) Do NOT railroad! However, keep timing in mind, and let your players know that if they dork around too long over here the BBEG might be UP TO SOMETHING over there, and they could miss it. Give plenty of hooks and clues to get them where they need to be. If they don't go there in time, let the BBEG do his thing, and them find out about it, and go, "OOOOOOOH. That's bad. We need to stop him before he does something even WORSE!" 4) Eventually, you'll get through the plot, although it may change from what you orginally planned. You'll still finish the adventure, with a REAL story, full of REAL characters who do REAL stuff. 5) Transcribe the sessions. 6) Edit it into a novel. 7) Marvel at the story that is so much more real than anything you could have planned out, in the first place.

Though I do wish I could expedite combat more so it can be gotten through faster and back to proper Roleplaying. But at least we get through a whole turn cycle before ending the game for the night and picking it up next week. perhaps it is my fault for setting up encounters that are intended to be challenging since we're drawing close to the end of the dungeon... because seeing something that is supposed to be a Miniboss, get two tapped doesn't quite sit right with me...
