My vacation was a lot of fun! Seriously, I haven't taken time off in forever, so it felt great to just get back out in the world. In any case, wrapping up the filming of Crown of Deceit was a major milestone for me. I can't wait to show you guys what I've got. Cause' it's good. Trust.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

First Story: I think the thing that really rubs me wrong about this is the way that the DM keeps saying "I can only picture your character as [insert thing here]", as though they know how you're going to play it. That makes it sound like he has a very specific idea for what he wants this story to be, and OP and their sister coming up with weird interesting stuff is throwing him off. It's bad. If OP sticks around to play this game, I hope we get another horror story about the campaign, because it sounds like it's going to be a mess just based on that.

Heyo! Liam here! Just for a bit of extra backstory; You got it exactly right. When she pulled me aside to talk she explicitly told me that she had her mental health crisis under control and would be able to play. I had only been around T a handful of times and she seemed to have a good head on her shoulders. This, combined with my limited knowledge of how bad her condition actually was, led me to run the game anyways. Not my brightest moment, but here we are. The crisis was also SO much worse than I thought. While I was writing and sending that story, she was having a meltdown in a movie theatre so bad that the staff THREATENED TO CALL THE POLICE. So you know... that happened

I should also add that while I play with a lot of people, we're not die-hard dnd players. We constantly flub rules and play rule-of-cool. In the Volcano story: I think there was a bigger problem with Joe's main character syndrome that you didn't touch upon even before the volcano. He was full on telling other characters how to play, whining about not being central, and trying to spotlight hog from what was said. The fact that he still wanted to be the hero and went so far as to not care about another character was part of that. Him not accepting responsibility seems par for the course.

I have so many questions about her mentality 1. Why would she choose a chaotic evil deity to worship 2. Why does her choice of deity give her magical control over all spiders she encounters 2b. Wouldn't commanding them require Speak With Animals and successful persuasion checks, maybe with advantage from her deity choice at most 3. Swarmkeeper's swarms aren't even actually animals, they're spirits bound to the Keeper that just take the appearance of something else?

For the cryptid story, first off, your DM hard vetoing multiple ideas after saying "You can play anything" should have been enough to make you leave the campaign Second, familiars can't attack. By definition. The way it's described makes it sound like she's playing a Beastmaster Ranger, in which case she wouldn't be able to pick up a Blink Dog anyway, and it's all just kind of a mess?

  • @wolpertinger700

    @wolpertinger700

    Жыл бұрын

It is a bit of a mix up, the creature can "attack" in so far that it does have jaws and can bite. But the main point of the creature was to be ridden as mobility for the 2 inch tall fae character. At no point would the blink dog actually attack, because it would be a waste and not the point. Further more the blink dog was chosen because "characters 3 feet and under tall are at risk of being whisked away by aerial enemies." So it was 100% an extra protection and way to get away from such enemies. I think at most if we were to reach a point where the dog does bite something, it'd be a roleplay (not combat) encounter and we'd probably just roll a D4 if damage is asked, and that's it.

Yeah, all sorts of red flags for being railroaded in this campaign. "You can do what you want, only not really, you have to stick with this narrow confines of what's acceptable. And that's how the game is going to be too, with me narrowing what you can and can't do so that it fits my specific image of what's aceptable." And from the sounds of the other things Joe plays in other games it'd be a total DM vs Players thing which is why he's nerfing anything "that would be OP."

Intro: Definitely a bad scenario waiting to happen. I think lore says Swarmkeeper Ranger's swarm aren't actually animals but fae that looks like them. Could use that to deny the other player's antics. 1st story: A cool premise wasted by a hypocrite DM. The image of a draconic centaur bathing in lava makes me interested in making something that can do that. 2nd story: Definitely a lighter story than I expected. Nice volcano scenario. Good to see horror stories where the problem player is properly punished or removed. 3rd story: Killing off late/absent players without telling them is pretty bad. As was not letting the OP play for no reason. Wastes people's time and makes attendance punishment look incredibly hypocritical. 4th story: I wouldn't be surprised if her mental health issue was a lie to prevent criticism, like the infamous airship story.

No fun for anyone except the controlling DM.

That cold open struck a chord with me. It is a yellow flag, maybe it'll be in good fun. But I would throw out two caveats if it were me: 1st: I reserve the right to veto any shenanigans involving my spiders turning against me. They are *my* class feature after all. 2nd: I reserve the right to veto any shenanigans involving my spiders during combat or stressful situations. If there isn't a good story reason for it to happen, or if all it does is endanger my character, or remove my access to class features, then it won't happen.

@@TheMightyBattleSquid yeah in hindsight thats easy to say. With the information available at the time, being worried was not overreacting, but changing characters or dropping out of the campaign without even trying to ask the DM or Maddie about it would have been overreacting. I had a friend playing an elven druid that made a joke about being able to convince my animal companion to do things since he can communicate with animals when I was playing a beastmaster ranger. I was a little concerned, but he never once tried to do anything that would harm me or be detrimental to the party. For the most part, it was RP stuff, like talking shit about me with my wolf companion behind my back, and sometimes id even let him go off on his own running errands with my wolf. They were almost as close as me and the wolf were. However, there WAS some actual combat uses for this dynamic. As im sure you know, beastmasters can only telpathically communicate with their animal if they are in line of sight. We were able to get around this limitation by using the druid to relay orders or information back and forth when me and wolfie werent able to see eachother. My wolf essentially was my animal companion and a psuedo-familiar to the druid at the same time. 😂😂 druid didnt get any direct mechanical boosts, but being able to communicate enemy locations to my wolf, who could then telepathically relay that information to me, waiting up on a hill or in the trees save our party from disaster on atleast 4 occasions. At the end of the campaign, my female ranger character had grown so close to the druid through their shared loved of the wolf (and my wolf totally snitching on anything the druid said), they fell in love and settled down together in the Cormathor Forest with the wolf being like a child to them. Damn. I miss that character. I really hope my DM decides to do a high enough level campaign to bring her back out. Hopefully i can convince my friend to dust off the ol'character sheet for his druid. By now theyve probably got a whole pack of wolves 😂 Point is, theres always potential with D&D. Dont assume the worst until someone gives you reason to.

The amount of time and effort that Jo puts in writing and sending messages to the other players, I mean think about the logged hours implicit in that description... That should have raised some red flags. Sure, maybe it's just some adhd hyperfocus acting up. But it could also be the upswing of a bipolar curve. 19:50 - I really think that OP was being too polite in describing the DM. I'm sure this warrants a few more obscenities. It's damned near the same scenario as when I joined the game I'm currently playing but the results are polar opposites. I came in on the second session, had never played with any of these people before - had voice chatted with two of them when I was being interviewed for a place in the game, but that was it - one of their players wasn't able to make it and it was basically "[Pilot] hasn't signed in. He works really weird shifts so he's probably asleep. Someone else can roll his skill checks for the session" and on we went - no fuss, nobody had to die. The crew had some stuff left over from the previous session to sort out and then they had to hire a crew for their ship - and that was *my* introduction, as someone who'd been stuck on that rock for far too long and eager to sign on just to get out of there. I think I had to wait possibly half an hour at the most, probably a lot less - I wasn't exactly timing it. And then we were off trading and fighting pirates - good shit! Similar setup - new player joining existing game and one of the players not showing up - totally different outcome... because our GM's not a wanker.

Great take on story one. Maybe the Tiefling's player plans to have his character mess with the swarm for an in-game day and then get bored with it. "Metagaming" is good when the other party explains they're not malicious they simply want to do X and if you're uncomfortable with X that's up for discussion. Also, anyone claiming it's on you to get over your discomfort is a red flag.

I can relate a little to the guy trying to tell the party what to do. I have a very active mind, then I calculate the optimal action for the state of the board for each round and adjust after any action/dice roll. BUT, I keep it all to myself, except when someone asks my opinion. And I avoid metagaming, since I have my game of d&d and play in another I helped my GM with the beta of the system, and I have a knack to have the powers of a rules lawyer.

Holy crap! ...How do people think that pretending to be useless and actually being extremely rude will get someone to like you as a person? I do think that it could be a worse story at play (especially with mental health stuff), but I've seen this exact behavior from my former sister-in-law, and it is possible that it was to gaslight and to manipulate the OP of that story, since the behavior seems to suggest that she wants OP (given where she claimed doing the exact same things she was doing to OP got her before). I think it isn't really a ridiculous thing, especially since the OP's girlfriend heard her brag about it

had a very similar situation to the story at 17:30. Was playing a play-by-post campaign on a forum. Party was split, each doing their own chores (Easier on PbP because you can take time to do everything). My character was having an emotional conversation with an NPC, trying to work through something that happened recently. I make my post, then for... some reason, still not entirely sure why... something like two weeks IRL pass by without a response to me from the DM. The DM is still active, every other character is getting replies to their conversations. Eight replies to one, five for another, three for another... meanwhile here i am... stiiiill waiting... Left two comments in the OOC thread saying "hey I'm still waiting for a response here" and everything. Nothing. Eventually i had enough and just had my PC walk out of the campaign. The NPC was clearly ignoring them, so the issue was never resolved and my PC made the wrong choice. DM made a "you were going to be the next response!!!" post which i still don't quite believe. Gave them the chance to ret-con the whole thing and just give me a reply once a week or so, and i was told this sounded "Hostage-ish", so i left. Really sucks too, as i was really enjoying the campaign. But when one PC is going through an entire conversation on the other end of town while my PC is just standing there awkwardly frozen in time... yeah... sorry but no thanks.

Well in the story with the Cryptid Id probably play a dragin born type character inspired by the koi dragon. My powers. Swim speed increase Extra spell slots/high stamina Regeration (immortality) Stream breath Increased physical attributes Increased perception (dragons have hearing, sight, and smell far stronger than movies give them credit for) Dragon form (it boosts dragon breath power and makes the increased perception passive as now you have the full dragon body) My way of balancing this would be to make it so the breath had a cool down and the senses would have to actively be used rendering me with more average perception and the regeneration would be low amounts of health over time.

I am gonna say this, NEVER start a new player in a long campaign. Do a one shot. That way it is not a long term commitment if they do not enjoy it. If they have done TTRPGs before, different story, but it still wise to do a one shot as every DM/GM is different. My style may not be a style they enjoy. once as a young, inexperienced GM, I had a new player join an in-progress game with a paladin. i planned out how to introduce the character mid-dungeon as the party would come upon them fighting and help them out. however, i made the mistake of not being flexible about this introduction - so when the party took the wrong hints and delayed arriving to the fight, i had the poor guy wait. then the party kept taking wrong hints. the guy kept waiting. he played rollies with one of the players for a bit. the end of the session came, and the party hadn't gotten to where i had planned to introduce the new character yet. i apologized to the guy. unsurprisingly, he never came back. suffice to say, i learned my lesson as a GM: introduce new characters IMMEDIATELY..

Also, it is a psychological thing that if someone offers you something and you accept it they tend to like you more, that doesn't just apply to men though.
