When the Incel Uses D&D to WHITE KNIGHT His True Love (+ More) - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

The stories in this one were... well they were certainly something. I'm going to get back to playing Minecraft. Hopefully, it will get my mind off whatever those last two stories were.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

Paladin's player was grooming the ranger character, the paladin would have just been stalking. The whole reason he introduced the "I'm going to marry this baby" plot was because he was called out on his character not raising the abandoned girl raised by solves.

With the Pokemon story, it's not Spooky being a DM trying to help OP make things good with their game. It's Spooky evolving into a 'That Girl' with the 'murderhobo' mindset with a dash of 'Player vs DM'. She wants to be powerful and be able to do everything without any resistance or care. When OP decides to try and add challenge to the game and nerf Sleep, she instead gets argumentative and lashes out instead of working with OP. Ultimately, nothing of value lost when OP ended the game and get her out of his life

Spooky's DM was like 5 billion times TOO NICE. I can't believe they called themself stupid rather than calling out Spooky for being just a horrible, horrible person. There were plenty of ways to be encouraging and nice while still expressing the same opinions--the kindest thing I can say about Spooky is that she probably has a personality disorder and could benefit a lot from therapy and medication so that she stops taking a game so personally. But that, of course, doesn't mean anyone should have to hear her garbage or deal with her in the meantime.

DM in the story about Spooky is way to hard on themself. It sounds as though they took a lot of Spooky's verbal abuse to heart, and that's really unfortunate. DM, if you see this, if you haven't been discouraged from ever DMing again, try to trust yourself a little bit more. Lots of players enjoy games that have moral dilemmas and deeper meanings. And if you make mistakes, most reasonable players will point it out politely, not with all that nastiness. If you end up with someone like her again, I want you to remember this phrase, and use it: "It sounds like you and I aren't a good fit for each other. Good luck finding a game you enjoy more."

Hey Crispy thx for covering my story (The pokemon one). There were a ton of issues in that game i didn't include merely cause the post was getting too long. I dont really understand the adversity for dilemmas. I get that games are usually better off stressful, but I feel making a decision, even if it leads to an undesirable outcome, is why RPGS are so fun. I have been given suggestions of after removing Spooky I should continue with the game, but because i had a small set of players and was halfway through the campaign, I rather give it a rest and work on something else, as I don't want to continue a game with spiteful energy. Thanks for the support. Also good god that last story is messed up.

Yo, check out the comments of this video! There's a lot of people giving out their support for you - but the gist of their messages is that you shouldn't take Spooky's verbal abuse to heart. Words are taken from who they came from, if an asshole tries to criticize you, you have all the right to ignore them. Moreover, keep on playing! You're more than enough of a good GM to keep your players invested, and once the situation is cleared up, I'm sure they'll be understanding enough to support you throughout your tabletop journey, and to pick you up and help whenever you make a mistake! Good luck!

For what it's worth, you didn't do anything wrong that couldn't be explained away as you being new to the whole DMing thing and Spooky was being unreasonable just to try and guilt trip you into giving her perks she didn't earn or deserve. If you don't want to continue the campaign then that's fair enough, but if you ever decide to give it another shot (sans spooky) then I'm sure the rest of the players would appreciate it. Just remember, every DM had to start off somewhere, it's not an unforgivable sin to make mistakes or bad calls once in a while. It seems as though you understand why your mistakes were issues and are striving to improve over time, and that's really the best anyone can ask of a rookie who just started getting into the game. Keep it up, I'm sure you'll do fine in the long run.

Hey there, I'm glad you're here! I hope you saw my comment earlier directed at you! Short version: Lots of people would probably enjoy the style of game you were trying to run. You may make mistakes, but you don't need to be so hard on yourself, and no one has a right to treat you the way you were treated. If you're in a game and someone is just hating your game and the way you run it, they don't want to be there. Politely let them know you're not a good fit for each other, and wish them luck. I hope you're not horribly discouraged by this experience. That person was absolutely awful.

Hi. I'm tossing in with these guys. You may have been a new GM, but it really does seem like Spooky was using the fact that they GMed before against you to try and get things to go their way regardless of what the rules actually were. The example conversations were shared were prime examples of gaslighting. I know it sucks to have to boot people from your games. I've had to do that with a few players myself, and some of them were my friends because they were toxic to the group, disruptive, or turned out not to be who I thought they were. The ban hammer can even make the other players nervous. Just follow the golden rule of TTRPGS : TALK IT OUT! Don't be afraid to talk about the issues at the table and as the DM don't be afraid to put your foot down. Not every game is going to appeal to everyone. And if you have to ban someone, talk to your other players and give them assurances. We're often playing with our friends, so you should be comfortable enough to talk to them. As for DMing, there are a LOT of advice channels on KZread and other places. I suggest Seth Skorkowski. He usually focuses on things like Cyberpunk and such, but he has some very good general advice for DMs on the whole, including how to handle problem players and how to improve as a DM. I hope you keep playing and DMing!!! TTRPGs are a fantastic hobby. And your pokemon caring for children was a great idea.

We all collectively take care of the two babies (2y, 1y) and the older kids play video games or watch movies in the other room. The mom of the fiancee of the other DM (me and him swap weeks) has started coming over to help with the babies because she likes kids and we are comfortable with her now, so that helps. It takes a bit of understanding and sometimes we might get 2-3 hours of play in the 4-5 hours we are there, but def doable.

Even in the games where "you have to open the shadow pokemon's heart to make it form bonds again", there's no actual bonding mechanic, which is prominently displayed by the fact you can catch shadow pokemon but you can't make one by being a terrible person... Even though NPCs made them through that method. Happiness as a stat is basically just there for show, I've certainly never seen a pokemon just up and leave cause they were done with my shite. Intro story: Oof. Sounds like a messed-up family over there. Good thing OP had the sense to leave! First story: I guess we know where Sarah got her tendency to pick fights over what she can and can’t do in an RPG. Somehow, I don’t see OP’s relationship with Sarah going well in the future… (And yes, I’m well aware that Sarah is nowhere near as bad as her mother. Sarah’s just mildly argumentative, while her mother apparently never mentally progressed past the age of six, because anyone over that age should be mature enough to not throw tantrums over a pretend game.) Second story: Ugh, what a brat! Good on OP for blocking them. OP, if you’re reading this, I’m sure you’re an awesome DM. Keep taking constructive feedback, stay consistent with your rulings, and don’t let jerks like Spooky ruin your confidence. I hope you can get back into DMing soon! Third story: Paladin was obviously the main problem here, but OP’s not exactly blameless-why the fuck didn’t they DO anything? As a DM, I would have shut Paladin down as soon as he started trying to impose on Ranger’s backstory when she clearly didn’t want it. The DM has authority over character creation, and OP should have used it before things got ugly. Fourth story: What. The. Fuck. That is all I have to say.

    4th Story: [Internal Screaming]

  • @soultpp

    @soultpp

    Жыл бұрын

All we know from the first story is that Sara and OP had one disagreement over a single spell. For all we know if her mother hadn't exploded OP could have shown her why what she wanted to do was wrong and continued past it without issue. I am not saying that she was in the right or anything just that we cannot extrapolate a whole personality from the two-three sentences that OP wrote about the situation. Sara also was not blameless in that she agreed to let her mother attend without discussing it with OP presumably knowing that her mother already had issues with OP. This still doesn't mean that her general nature is inclined towards picking fights. The DM did try to step in after the 'ewww' moment and I would like to assume that he at least tried before that,. The problem was that Paladin was just getting more and more forceful about the situation and sounds like a very agreesive person, since he completely ignored the DM when he did mention trying. Maybe the DM in this story could have tried harder, I agree with you there, but not everyone has the ability to just "shut someone down" cold like you said, especially when this was a long time acquaintance (friend?), and perhaps he was trying a more diplomatic defusion of the dilemma (Sorry got poetic). Also, sometimes it is way harder to stand up to your friends than complete strangers. His attempts did not work of course, and this story is the result. DM's probably not totally blameless true, but most of the blame should be on Paladin from being a controlling and disgusting jerk.

Okay. That elf reminded me of "Vampire Knight" so much! The MC of it is the ML's brother, but not really as the real brother was sacrificed as a baby to reincarnate the super powerful ancestor vampire! He then fell in love with his "sister" when he saw her as a baby because she was the reincarnation of his dead lover, or something. It is beyond gross and incest is totally okay so to "keep the blood pure". Oh. And the reason the baby was sacrificed was because its uncle was salty that his sister married her other brother and not him.

Unrelated to the stories in this video, just felt like sharing. A number of years ago, I had a friend who was running a D&D home brew campaign. One of our players stipulated he would only play if he got to play a Centaur, as centaurs were his favorite fantasy race. At the time, we could not find/didn't know of any official rules for centaur as playable races, so we helped DM fabricate one. The next hurdle was figuring out what class for the centaur. Player moaned and groaned about how none of the classes fit into his preconception of what a centaur was supposed to do. Ultimately, he begrudgingly settled on druid. First couple of sessions went OK. Campaign was a little dull, but whatevs. Over time, centaur player began to withdraw from the game, only piping up when we specifically asked him to. Eventually he stopped showing up to sessions. When asked about his withdrawal from the campaign, he just said "I really just don't feel like I'm playing a centaur". uhh...ok. We asked how we could adjust to make it more fun for him, he just said "I don't know." We ended up just taking turns puppeting the character, since we liked the idea of a shape shifting centaur aiding us. Fast forward to my turn to DM. I created my own home brew campaign, but after the experience from the last game, I put forward a rule: only readily established playable races will be allowed. Centaur player then got super mad, refused to play the campaign, and said I singled him out. He never joined a game with us after that. Still friends with him, but yeesh.

I have to wonder, is there something like Main Character Syndrome, but instead of wanting to be the main character, you actually want to set other characters up for greatness while your own character remains unnoticed, in the background? It wouldn't be being a Lancer as a Lancer is the sort of character that acts like a rival to an MC, equal in nearly every way to them, and always making the MC step their game up into becoming the MC properly. The Lancer will often team up, but will never stop competing with the MC, so Lancer wouldn't describe what I enjoy doing. As an example, in a Pathfinder game, I created a Ninja who would repeatedly set up enemies to be easily picked of by the Monk and Fighter. I'd use weapons and equipment to disarm and restrain the enemies, or poison them, or deform the battlefield around them, or I'd use something to aid the frontline characters and set them up with bonuses to attacks or skill checks. I'd set up segues that would prompt them to be the ones to figure out the solutions to puzzles, or else go behind everyone's backs, in disguise, and spread positive rumors about the other party members so that when they interacted with NPC's, they'd show up on good terms, with positive reputations, being liked, all while my character contentedly lurked in the background, sometimes literally hiding (disguised) in plain sight, not drawing any attention. I love playing like that, avoiding the spotlight in the narrative sense, without just being a lurker who only shows up for combat or something. I like actively roleplaying being that support character who's always pulling strings just out of sight, enabling others to shine. Is there a term for that?

That last story... oh god. I've had nearly the same experience with my first online DM (and player in games I later DM'd), who after about a year of friendship confided that she... got off... listening to me some times. She told me all about how yes, she was married, but her husband was understanding of her needs, and she very candidly asked if I wanted to ERP. Now I'm not easily flustered and I wasn't about to break ties with an excellent roleplayer over that but boy it did leave me just a little bit weirded out! I politely sidestepped the invitation and we did stay friends for several more years until other D&D shenanigans split us apart. . . . . . On consideration, over the seven years of playing 5e I've now had five people hit on me through those channels... maybe it's just my bassy villain voices? Ultimately one player (not the aforementioned!) did cross the world and become my long-term partner, so I guess I made good from it in the end.

I have actually DM'd a game at a local gaming club with one of the player's grandma sitting in. Fortunately, I was running a game set in Zootopia which, by nature, was light, fluffy and inoffensive. I think she enjoyed the experience and was charming to chat to in downtime when players went to the bathroom and the like. So.. slightly better than the second story! --- Also, isn't the "fell in love at birth" thing a horrifying plot point from Twilight?!

Do multiple comments help the algorithm? This was supposed to be part of another comment but I accidentally sent it early and didn't feel like editing this in. Pokemon campaign sounds fun but that player gave RPG horror stories a bad name. Felt like she was gaslighting the OP/DM into thinking they were a problem player just for inconveniencing her character. I heard the elven paladin story before and I gotta say I like how ranger pointed out the plotholes in his backstory connection plan. And glad there was a relatively positive response to players being dissuaded from tabletop over these experiences. Usually it's portrayed as tragic that a potential hobby doesn't get valued enough to utterly ignore some trauma. That last story was just.... I have no words. Wow. That's it.

I've been playing/DMing D&D for 30 years and I've played with new DMs. You know what I don't do? Browbeat the DM for making mistakes. That's a good way to chase away people wanting to run a game in a game that needs new DMs. Let people play in the place they are.

I tuned most of that out due to enjoying everything else so much. That and Fairy Tail numbed me to "fanservice" after it did worse in the final arc. I just saw it as acknowledging Meliodas knows Elizabeth is a reincarnation romance right after her past self dies.

Spoilers for Seven Deadly Sins . . . . . The difference is that Meliodas and Elizabeth both met each other centuries ago, only for them to be cursed by their respective parents for falling in love, as members of the demon and sacred races respectively. Meliodas was cursed with immortality, but every time he died, he'd lose a bit more of his personality since his soul would have to go through the demon realm every single time, which eroded his soul over time until Ban was able to restore his soul later on. Elizabeth was cursed with reincarnation, but was fated to die soon after she uncovered her memories of who she was. So each time she met Meliodas as a new incarnation, she would slowly regain her memories, die, get reborn into a new person, and the cycle would continue over and over again until her curse was broken. Also, by the time Meliodas meets Elizabeth again, she's already a young woman who he happens to meet during his travels. He's not like stalking Elizabeth's mother each time she's reincarnated or anything like that until she's born, it's usually Meliodas meeting Elizabeth again in her latest incarnation, possibly as a secondary effect of her curse so he'd slowly become more and more corrupted until he loses all his emotions and becomes a better vessel for his father, the demon king.
