    It's silly but the abstraction of the idea isn't too far off. Meme culture can be incredibly insular and on so many layers of irony that explaining it to someone not in the know can be tough. You don't need to go on the "dark web" but you do often have to go to deep corners of the internet. Try explaining why a loss meme is funny to a 50 year old who never heard of it and you'll see what I mean.

    To be fair - and I do not enjoy saying this with reference to rapists -, but you wouldn't believe how many, many rapists are victims of rape themselves (usually recurring child abuse). There's a horrible pattern and vicious cycle behind the phenomenon of abuse, as there is behind most forms of violence when victims don't get professional treatment. This is why SVU's work is so very important!

    That threat to take his mother's house smells A WHOLE LOT like malicious prosecution to me...

  • @mrcrhartman

    @mrcrhartman

    3 жыл бұрын

    Malicious prosecution is when a person uses the court system to push a case without evidence for a personal reason such as revenge or even career advancement. In this depiction the suspects attorney was portrayed as legitimately fearing the RICO forfeiture, so the threat was legal. Plea negotiations are for the very purpose of allowing a suspect to plea in exchange for reduced consequences, so forcefully promising pursuit of a legal consequence is well within the expectations of such a meeting. The fact that the suspect had counsel present undermines a claim of illegal action by the prosecutor, because the defense counsel can shut the meeting down at any time, invoking the fifth amendment, but here chose not to. That's an inadequate assistance of counsel CLAIM, perhaps, but that would not prevail as long as the defense attorney cited any strategic reason that fell within the normal behavior of an attorney in his position. A badly worded "threat" by a prosecutor can raise an extortion claim, but the writers had the prosecutor say he was going to seize the house, not "if you don't X, then I will seize the house". The suspect, in this depiction, succumbed emotionally on his own. RICO statutes are used all the time in surprising ways. Even that rapper 69 picked up RICO charges because he talked to others about a crime. The thing I hate about these shows is that in real life, the most inexperienced first year attorney would have ended the meeting as soon as it became coercive, and they write this dumb trope of a confession during plea negotiations into half the episodes. That LITERALLY NEVER HAPPENS. But...that's entertainment.

    You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward--reversing cause and effect. I call these the “wet streets cause rain” stories. Paper’s full of them. In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story-and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read with renewed interest as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about far-off Palestine than it was about the story you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know. They NEVER research.

    Incel is a international problem and not every country has a law forbidding sex work. An incel in Western Australia, for example, could legally find a lady companion for the night. That's not really the issue though, the issue is viewing sex a resource one is entitled to as opposed to an act that people do together out of feelings of mutual attraction and trust.

  • @Rachel_Love.

    @Rachel_Love.

    5 жыл бұрын

    I mean yeah it's illegal but so is rape, that's really not a strong argument. To ask "why wouldn't he just hire a working girl?" is a completely reasonable thought in this situation. If one is so desperate for sex that they would be willing to rape a girl they're already passed the point where breaking the law is an issue. Which leads one to conclude that if someone is willing to commit a crime to get sex which is the lesser of the two evils, soliciting a prostitute or rape?

    Why? It's a problem that turns into criminal activity. It was expressed pretty badly though, with no female incels, and with a very ignorant statement about them just getting hookers. They're secretly self loathing people that want to control someone else, sex is only part of that gratification.

    And that, ladies and gentlemen is what is wrong with this country. The state can take stuff from your family members while they investigate. That is 99 kinds of wrong. They lower themselves to the level of what they are fighting by doing this. Seize the property of the defendant? Yea. Not a problem. But if the defendant's name isn't on the deed, they shouldn't be able to touch it.

But they did and therefore to maintain credibility they would have to seize it if he hadn't confessed.

    First, this is a vivid illustration as to what is wrong with the civil asset forfeiture laws as practiced today. There is no way that a senior citizen should be out on the street because of the misdeeds of her son. Secondly, as a historical note, this whole involuntary celibacy thing started in the early days of the internet, when a young woman named Alanna began a computer bulletin board called Alanna's Involuntary Celibacy Board. The whole point of the exercises was that men and women with relationship difficulties (involuntary celibate) could brainstorm the difficulties they encountered in establishing healthy opposite sex relationships. Thirdly, the fact that some mentally unbalanced men later came to occupy front and center stage in this whole matter is nothing less than a tragedy. Finally, if the stereotypes around the Chads and Staceys of this world are accurate, why one would want to emulate them is completely beyond me.

    MsJenn1985 it’s short for involuntarily celibate. Basically someone who wants to get laid but can’t. However, the word now implies a lot more than just that. When calling someone an incel it’s likely because they are a virgin (or seem like one) and a misogynistic, sexist, all around awful person who blames women and society’s for their lack of sex rather then themselves. Many believe they are entitled to sex and some even go as far as thinking the government should provide them a sexual partner. So it’s really a lot more than just a virgin that doesn’t want to be one.
