This Creepy DM Railroaded a D&D Player Into Being Naked (+ More) - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

We've officially reached 30,000 subscribers! Thank you all so much for your support, it means so much to me. How am I going to celebrate this? Probably by prepping another D&D game and playing more Destiny.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

I don't know what's worse, a player being an obnoxious stereotype, or people obnoxiously forcing a stereotype onto someone, a bard entirely motivated by art is cooler than a horny bard, I even wanted to play a bard that's more of a introvert and plays more melancholic songs, like nirvana

I now want to make my dragonborn bard and have them get requested to seduce someone with room for interpretation, then he takes it as intimidating the target with he/she not helping the party makes him/her an evil to be smited. My bard had the personality of a Paladin and was built for intimidation and combat.

I made a College of Lore Bard that was an archeologist and huge history lover that found their way into a secret society to preserve all history and not let it be erased or altered. They also came across a Fey being that was very curious about mortal history and offered him powers in exchange for him learning more and teaching them. A little combo of Monument Men and Indiana Jones.

Last story: if you need "event X" to happen to progress a storyline, don't be fixated on HOW event X does happen. Focus on what and why and you'll find ways to make it happen in a way that doesn't compromise player agency. Even from a purely logical viewpoint, if "bad person" wants to steal "thing" from player, unless they're total idiots they'll have multiple plans. Failing to seduce someone is not an unlikely event. Any villain of average intellect would have a backup plan.

for example, have the drow come in pretending to help with the lyrics, maybe? like, seriously, trying to push the horny bard stereotype makes no fucking sense, there's so many other bards you could play as. When the bard first refused the drow's advances, I would have switched gears. Plead instead of seduce. Having the drow whisper to the bard, "Please, if you refuse me my boss will be displeased and punish me. Just let me stay in your room for a while." This way she still gets in the room. And getting caught stealing doesn't mean she actually doesn't succeed. It just means she didn't get it without being noticed. She could still grab and bolt, leading to a chase.

@@davidtherwhanger6795 Yeah, DM got fixated. Gotta stay loose if you're trying to pass one over a player (less so if you're just trying to fool the PC). But the real problem is DM wasn't paying attention to the player's needs in the moment, if a player is giving you that much resistance then you need to talk to them about what's up and put your cards on the table about what you're trying to do in this scene, and how they want to handle that. Also, if it don't work it don't work, the DM has an unlimited supply of resources, their thieves can always try another day.

1st story: the coded messages were far to nonsensical to be acually used. I've done coded messages before you drop a letter in the players path, the letter is some basic letter about orange shipments or a letter from doting grandma. The twist is you put an obvious notation that marks it as special and the players read every third letter or something to reveal plans to steal the crown jewels

  • @davidtherwhanger6795

And that makes sense. What really got me was how the DM thought it was reasonable for the party to go to the alley and dig to china for the next clue. No reasonable person would have thought that. I've used digging for clues before. But I had the party get a tip from a villager that they saw one of the suspects "digging the other day by the big oak on the other side of the hill from the village". And then tell them it looked like they buried something and filled in the hole. It was a red herring, but it gave a reason for the party to dig and where.

Why they didn’t just do that is a riddle for the ages. First story: Oh, DM… how on earth do you manage to fuck a game up that badly? I could go through every single thing he did wrong, but we’d be here all day. New DMs should be shown this story as an example of how NOT to DM. Second story: Okay, this guy should also be shown to new DMs as an example of how not to DM. What a fucking creep. This story should also be told to new players as an example of why they shouldn’t stick around in a game that’s giving them bad vibes. Not all bad DMs are disgusting perverts, but a sizable percentage are. Third story: If you don’t want players to use abilities from certain classes, JUST DON’T LET THEM PLAY THOSE CLASSES! All you have to say is: “I’m running a low-magic campaign; bring martial characters,” or something along those lines. Also, don’t play favorites. That’s just rude. Fourth story: That’s just sickening. I desperately wish I could unhear that. Fuck you, Jared.

Third Story: That sounds like a DM who played a martial character in a campaign with a caster who could deal more damage than them, and thus has a "magic users are OP, the martials need huge buffs to even things out" mindset. Not to mention the absolutely blatant favoritism. Like, man, that barbarian sure did get anything and everything they could want before mid-tier. And as though the wizard alchemist couldn't write down recipes in code or something to recall how to make potions. Would've been insane if that PC had died and the player made a fighter, and suddenly was getting magical gear and boons left and right. EDIT: Oh yeah, the bit about how attack spells "hit the monster's tail and it falls off without hurting it" is insane. That's tantamount to saying "you blast the creature and its arm falls off, but because the body part you hit falls off, it takes no damage." It lost part of its body. That's damage.

Intro Story: If they didn't go out of their way to hog the spotlight and force the game into becoming a two-player dating sim, I don't think that the party would've had any major issues with them playing a lovey-dovey couple in-game. Though the wife inviting the husband along without even telling the group, let alone the DM, about it beforehand really rubs me the wrong way, since they probably knew that the GM would let him join just to avoid drama. Pretty underhanded stuff all around. 1st Story: Protip for any DM's out there, if you want the players to do X and you base your campaign around the players doing X, just start the game off with the players already in the process of doing X so they can actually get on to the actual campaign. Also, having every NPC treat the party like garbage with little justification or provocation is the easiest way to make them either quit the campaign or become murderhobos who become legitimate problem players down the line. Not to say it justifies anything, but it's something that'll cause issues down the line and is very counter intuitive if you really wanted the group to do X. 2nd Story: It's clear that this GM either doesn't watch One Piece or only used it to bait people like OP into their crappy campaign. It's bad enough taking away someone's agency, but to take away agency to try and force someone into a situation involving SA just pushed the situation over the edge. At least OP left as soon as she realized what the GM was actually after. 3rd Story: It always sucks when you get stuck in a campaign where you're not allowed to do the thing that your character is literally built to do, especially when other members of the party are allowed to do whatever they want and more, thanks to the DM showering them with magic items, magic weapons, and more perks than you can think of. Unfortunately, there's no real way to salvage the campaign, especially if the GM doesn't understand why it's an issue, it's just a shame that the entire experience turned OP off to D&D as a whole. Last Story: I've said it in another video where this story was featured, but I'll say it again. There are multiple ways the DM could've done to resolve this issue without involving SA, which only makes the way that OP was railroaded into the situation makes it so much worse.

Unless player intrigue versus player intrigue is the norm, secret messages need more than one person or means to solve. I don't mean one person has part of the message and needs to combine it with another, but if it's in an unusual language, you make sure multiple players have it, or you send in an NPC to prevent soloists. If it's encrypted, have an NPC around to help (not recommended), let them make checks for hints (recommended), or have an NPC in the room do something to give a tip (if every third word, have a gambling table shout My three three's beats your pair of aces!). I ran a little mission for the start of the campaign a while back where I gave each player an envelope with a number 1-5 on it. Inside was the same greeting paragraph, but the bottom paragraph was nonsense to any one player. All 4 of my players who were there were pointed out to each other as they asked the bar staff for more info. They started talking about the letters they all had, and the nonsense below. Since one of the players I prepped for never showed, I had a barmaid present them with the fifth note, as a rouge popped in the back and said: "Thanks but no thanks" to the obvious job. I think I reminded them at this point that the envelopes do have numbers on them, and that they have everything they need. It didn't take them too much longer to figure out that the bottom paragraph was split into 5 and divided amongst their letters, and the numbers on their envelopes were the order to read. This was a test by their future employer as if they couldn't solve it, then he wouldn't really want them and try to shoo them away as nothing more than meatheads when he wants thinkers. As a DM, that would mean instead of running missions that require careful thought, just send them into a dungeon crawl.

My boy, being built for fighting and only fighting, catches none of these hints so she gets very overt with him. Cue gob-barb excusing himself thinking she wants to kill him, so he excuses himself and basically barricades the room in the tavern he's staying in. Now he boobytraps his lodgings every single night and is very suspicious of the sea (she's a Triton), so that he's absolutely ready for this shark women when she comes for him in the night.

@@ArcCaravan Why are you concerned with OP keeping a character's sexuality to themselves? It's not that important compared to the DM ignoring a player's wishes and sexually assaulting them. I'm OP of the story btw A) It's not really relevant until it suddenly was. Even then DM should've just accepted a No. Man is literally ignoring consent. B) It was stated that it was a sexuality I myself were exploring and wasn't 100% fully comfortable with it. Coming out saying "my character is asexual" would've effectively been me symbolically coming out of the closet. Which I wasn't ready to do with a DM I barely knew. Again, it shouldn't have even mattered. It shouldn't have went beyond "I don't want to do this." The onus is not on me to provide the DM with every piece of information he might need about why he shouldn't rape my character. He should just not fucking rape my character and to a point me.

The "The worst thing a DM can do is to ignore a players clearly stated boundaries after acknowledging them" thing in the last story? I have a WILD horror story about that that I probably will post on that reddit eventually! Super short version is, IRL romantic partners get into a fight as one (player) has a big issue with charm and mind control spells in D&D based on IRL trauma while the other, DM, thinks she's over reacting and should be less hard line in her stance. They agree to drop it and NOT have mind manipulation in that game and just talk about it later... Then the DM has an NPC use mind control on the player and has her violently attack her friends in a scene that comes off less like, "Hey let me show you how this is fine" and more, "F YOU! THIS IS WHAT YOU GET FOR NOT LETTING ME WIN THE ARGUMENT!" I had not been in that session, but player was my roommate and I saw the fallout IRL (game was online) and basically everyone, but DM confirmed that it was SUPER F-ed up and ugly.

(value can be DPR, CC, healing, buffs, anything that contributes to the party's success, and I don't expect everyone to have the same combat output). I also have a preference for starting a game gear starved and then trickling the gear players want throughout the game, but I also express that in session 0 so that everyone knows. This guy is the worst of all worlds, explicitly unbalancing the party and only gear starving some characters while gear feasting another. +5 stuff doesn't even exist in my games and in the unlikely event that it did, it would absolutely be end game. The party managed to kite the golem back to the portal they came from and unleashed it upon the mercenary fort (and the poor countryside). I let it happen, because it was awesome, and they deserve to have fun in their adventure. After that session, I went back and adjusted the merc fort map to be half destroyed and strewn with bodies. I made it a point that whenever the party was out in the wilderness, they could hear it's thunderous footsteps and robotic voice echoing through the valley. How do you make a role play fantasy work?

Okay. That first game should have been interactive fiction (meaning the video game genre). On the one hand, nine or ten players aren't a problem when you've taken away their ability to do anything but the one action which advances the story, and I can see that having more players might imply a greater chance of somebody doing the right thing at the right time. The problem is you've also told them all to solo the adventure. Also, you forgot to tell them they can reload the game every time they do something that doesn't work - or forgot IF kind of depends on that ability because it isn't flexible enough to let players find their own ways of approaching problems. I'd like to think I'd have given it five more seconds to see if somebody came out of nowhere to clobber the old man, and then tried to do it myself, just to make sure this isn't the kind of anime-inspired setting where characters can be openly perverted because they still have no chance of getting anywhere. (While I'm dubious about inserting that into a One Piece campaign it's possible.) But honestly, I probably wouldn't have waited either.

About the last 3 stories... yeah, I don't think "don't do that" can be stated enough.

Every single DM just needs to write a book. D&D is the wrong medium to express their self-indulgent stories and creepy fucking desires.
