Hi Gary, thank you so much for this informative video! I transitioned from Windows to Mac several weeks ago and your channel has been a treasure for understanding the system. I binged so many videos before getting my MacBook and I truly believe that's how I was able to start using it immediately, frustration-free! Thank you! Regarding this video, I was wondering if you knew if there's a way to create a custom keyboard shortcut for a context menu? I would love to create a keyboard shortcut for Safari that imitates the action right click>Paragraph Direction>Right to left (or left to right). Is there a way to achieve this? Perhaps even through a third-party app?

Usually you would just find the menu item in the Menu Bar and put the keyboard shortcut there. But this is one of those cases where the item only exists in the context menu so there's no way to do it.

Been playing around with all this ever since picking up a wireless keyboard for my M1 MBP. Trying to keep my hands on the keyboard as much as I can without using the mouse. Been happy with most shortcuts I've created, but one problem, Globe + C gives you Control Center, but with a third party keyboard, there's no way to map fn over the globe in the settings. Then also the fact that when you trigger Control Center, the arrow keys doesn't work in it so it sucks. I've send a feature request on this one. Hopefully they'll be interested to make some changes.

I’ve had an interesting problem. I was setting the function keys for the finder. Here, you have to know all of the functions you want to set beforehand. When I tried setting the keys, it had problems when one of them was a service I wrote with Automator. It wouldn’t hold a lot of my settings. Without that service, if I tried closing the settings window, then adding another function key later, all of my previous settings are lost. It would remember all of the menu options just not the function key assignments I gave them.

Thanks for this video! I'm looking for a keyboard shortcut to re-stack a stacked folder when I can't find the down arrow. Some of my stacks have thousands of files in them and it's virtually impossible to re-stack it because they completely fill the screen and I can't find that little down arrow. I have to restart my computer to fix it. I know the key command to invoke stacks but there doesn't seem to be a key command to re-stack them. Any help is appreciated.

I love your videos, learned so much already.. Thank you! Is it possible to create shortcuts for actions that aren't on the top menu? I would love to create a shortcut for lists on pages (numbered list, bullet list)... Unfortunately, although pages has an easy and quick option to creat a shortcut to use in that particular document, I can't create one that would work in all pages documents. Tried the shown method using the name "numbered" (format > bullets & lists > numbered) but didn't work. This action is not available on the top menu, only on the side menu on the format tab, hence my question! Thank you so much again, hope you can help me out! Greetings from Brazil!

So I want to assign Back and Forward hotkeys to them but I have no idea how. In Windows there's a name for all the mouse buttons - mouse1 is a left one, mouse2 is a second one, mouse3 is a scroll wheel and any extra buttons are just mouse4, mouse5 etc. Maybe you know, how to assign something to such extra mouse buttons in MacOS?

How do I do this for Menu points, that have special Quotes / Double quotes in their name? I have a menu point: Window -> Move to screenname In English this works as a short, like you show in the Video. In German it becomes Window -> Auf „screenname" bewegen. I tried copying the exact text from a screenshot of the menu (same like with this comment), but it still won't recognize it and My german qwertz keyboard can't type what ever quote symbol that is. You are probably not getting the right characters when you use Live Text to grab the text from a screenshot (translated menu to image, pixels in the image to text). I don't know how to type those since I'm not using a German keyboard, but I'm sure you can. Experiment and see.

Would be tough to implement though. System Settings would have to reach into other apps, examine their code, and determine if the key combination was in use. But there are many ways that an app can activate keyboard shortcuts dynamically so it wouldn't always be able to tell.
