Even two years later this video is teaching. The very last tip is what I was looking for. 8:37 - Your section 15 for Keyboard shortcuts for left and right was the king for me. One small note. Chrome has a different wording for this action, so for system windows it will say "Move Window to Left Side of Screen"; for Chrome though, it'll be: "Tile Window to Left of Screen". I added both versions using CONTROL+OPTION+COMMAND+ARROW (option+command+arrow was already taken in chrome to change tabs).

Gary, fantastic video. Anything I can do to prevent from using a 3rd party app is fine with me. I knew a couple of these tricks and learned a lot of new ones. After watching the video, seeing your examples being put to use, why would anybody use a 3rd party app to achieve those tasks?

Thank you for the video. My main problem is the issue with delete. Sometimes I want to just delete the file on my iPad but keep it in the iCloud. So when I use the delete it. Appears to delete from iCloud and on my iPad. The scenario I want is to just delete it on my iPad to free up space on the iPad but I may want to download the file to my iPad again in the future. No. The app developer has to build that into the app.

Not sure what you mean, sorry. You can always make the icons the size you want, and then use the Preview pane or Quick Look to preview the file. See kzread.info/dash/bejne/lmqmw9GzYZTAitI.html

Is there anything standard that "Option", "Control", and "Cmd" do? It's really hard to remember the apparently random assignment of these keys, especially when combined.

There is a loose system to it. Command is used most of the time, and sometimes another is added. Primary things like Copy, Quit and Close are Command+letter. Command+Option is usually the next preferred combination, with lots of alternative shortcuts using Command+Option. Then like shortcuts try to use the same letter. So Close Window is Command+W and Close All Windows is Command+Option+W. But often the letter just sticks with the name to hep you remember. So Command+N in the finder is a New Finder window, and Command+Shift+N is New Folder. Two very different things, but both using the word "New."

Best video on how to manage windows on macOS. However the Apple way isn't very productive...

I am trying to setup my newest MacBook Pro M1 to operate as much like a windows PC as possible as far as arrangement and how folders and icons snap into place so they’re all in equal alignment. Is that possible on a Mac?

Hey Gary: So many MacOS built-in features! Vast majority of 3rd party apps I find have no "unique value-add".

I had the hope you were showing me how to save and maintain my preferred window size every time I open it but unfortunately, I don't have that choice. It's very annoying to resize Mac windows every time from the tiny default option on the computer. Anyways thanks for the great information like always.

The app windows stay where you put them when you close the app. Next time you open it, they'll be right where you had them in the previous session.

I wish I could change the colors of individual windows when I have multiple open. When all of them are the same color, I think I'm going to click on one but hit the other one that looks the same.

thanks for another great tutorial. One question though: is it possible (with MacOS or third party app) to position windows and SAVE them (save the window position or save the desktops in Mission Control) so they remain in the same place when you open them after restarting the computer? I'd like to set up my Stream Deck with a multi-action command that opens several apps and folders in their dedicated place, on 2 monitors (for music production). Thanks

That happens automatically. If you position a window it will stay put. But maybe you are closing your windows? Check System Settings, Desktop & Dock, "Close windows when quitting an application." If that is checked, then when you quit the app the windows are closed and when you launch the app you get NEW windows.

These are great tips! But the Mac OS Keyboard Shortcuts function fails to work after a few minutes.... I wish Macs where less dependent on cursor movements and more keyboard friendly.

That's odd. What happens after a few minutes? Which shortcuts don't work? I've never heard of that problem before and I use keyboard shortcuts constantly.

This seems so complicated compared to Windows. Whats the difference between move window left and tile left which is like Windows snap

Move will resize the window. Tile will enter Split View mode, which is like Full Screen mode but with two apps instead of one. kzread.info/dash/bejne/in-Vm8qjk6a3nqQ.html

@@macmost Thanks, that’s helpful. Your tutorials are very thorough. I did install Rectangle which seems to simplifying this instead of remembering a bunch of keystrokes. Windows 11 has this functionality built in. Maybe it’s just a case of practicing..

need to find a way to save the desktop fixed apps layout for daily usage and every time Mac is disconnected from external monitor, the orientations messed up.

Not sure what you mean by "tap to click." You adjust sizes by grabbing the edges or corners and dragging, or double-clicking them.

@@macmost yes thanks I am aware of that :) I meant that on my mac I use the track pad, rather than pressing down on the track pad to select and move the windows, do you know how to change from 'pressing down on the track pad' to just 'tap on the track pad' which would also select the windows and adjust? I used to be able to do this with my older mac but my new one doesnt seem to do it

@@helenchengnz So you are looking for the Tap to Click setting? It is in System Settings, Trackpad, Point & Click and it is the "Tap to Click " switch.

How about this one.... When I compose or reply to an email that window is sized on top, but within, the Mail window itself. Is there a way to force the sub-window to stay on top so that if you switch around windows or desktops you don't have to hunt for it? Or better, command-tab to the sub-window.

Are you using Mail in Full Screen mode? If not, it should appear as a separate window. But in Full Screen mode it behaves differently so it can coexist on the same Space as the main Mail window.

@@macmost No, not in full screen. What I mean is the reply/compose etc subwindow is covered over by the mail window if I command-tab away and come back. Causing me to have to slide/move windows around to uncover the compose window. I'd like to pin the compose window to "always on top"

@@tomdenapoli5313 There's no way to force it to stay on top. But I don't experience the same behavior when I try that. If I reply to an email and the reply window is on top, then Option+tab to another app, then Option+tab back, the windows are in the same order with the reply window on top. Only if I click on the main Mail window will it move on top of the reply window.

Hello, I tried opening another mail window in a new Desktop, that I then moved to the left to make it my main, but it would take me back to the Desktop 2 where it was opened again... I thought you said I could have any app open in each desktop? HELP!

Not sure what you've got going on there from your description, but keep trying. Mail works best as a single-window app though.

It’s just the regular mail from Apple… since I have it on the desktop 2 when I try opening it on desktop 1 or main it doesn’t open, it just takes me to desktop 2 🤦🏻‍♀️

Picked up some goods tips here, thanks. When I use the move to left side or right side of screen, it puts the window into full screen mode. Is that normal? I noticed yours didn't?

Not sure what you are describing. Just moving a window to the left or right by dragging shouldn't do that unless you've installed something that adds that.

@@macmost I'm referring to the green button, top left that fits your window, left or right when I want side by side windows. When I do that, it goes into full screen mode. I have to hit escape to get out of it.

@@I_Mackenzie When you try it, do you have other apps on the Desktop Space you start with? You need at least two, of course. Also, have you tried a variety of apps? Some apps will not have windows that can be divided to only half your screen.

I worked out if you just move to the left, instead of tile to the left, it does not put the window in full screen mode. Then I can just move the other window in place.

different programs use different names for moving a window in their menu so the shortcut method does not always work... Firefox uses "Move Window to Right Side of Screen" when you have a second window open vs the system default of "Move Window to the Left Side of the Screen" Breaking the shortcut key

Gary, my Safari windows and tabs are constantly collapsing after about 12 minutes. Very annoying when I'm trying to read something or watching a video. How can I stop this behavior? I'm using a MacBok Air M-1 with Mac OS Monterey. This is driving me crazy... to the point that I'm about to sell the Air and go back to my Intel MacBook. Can you please help?

@@macmost yes... after roughly 12-15 minutes without any mouse pointer movement whatever Safari window that has been active collapses... it just slides off the screen and disappears for no apparent reason. It's as if I pressed the command-tab keys to switch app windows. But I didn't press that key combination or any other. The windows collapse into a small, barely visible bar (or bars, if I had more than one Safari window open) at the edge of the screen and can only be restored by clicking on that bar. The "bars" are tiny, gray elements not more than 10 pixels wide. Does that clarify what's happening for you?

@@bobgaskins That sounds bizarre. Do you mean they are collapsing into the Dock? Like if you were to select Window, Minimize? I can't really say what is going on. It is almost as if you have some sort of special window manager installed that hides unused windows. I don't recognize this behavior at all.

@@macmost Yes, it's almost as if they're collapsing onto the dock, but they're not. I keep my dock at bottom of screen and use the show/hide dock function triggered by the mouse pointer. I don't use any sort of window manager other than what's already built into the OS. I've turned off every setting I can find that might have some affect on how windows are handled but the behavior persists. I'm actually glad to discover that you are baffled by this, too: I've used Macs for over 30 years, all the way back to the Mac SE days, so thought I knew just about everything they can do. But this has me tearing my hair out. I'm going to try un-installing non-Apple software next. And if that doesn't help, I guess I'll have to make an appointment at the Genius Bar. Fortunately I live in the Chicago area, so there are several of those around here. Thank you very much for your attempt to help! If you wish, I'll let you knowhow it all works out.

I wish Apple's Finder would let us tile our windows with them all snapped together like the way you can tile windows in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I don't want to use a third party app or plugin for that.

go to finder setting then choose open folders in tabs instead of windows, now all folders open like tabs in a web browser in one window....

my windows don’t snap to edges

Now if we could only get the Launchpad Icons to sort Alphabetically....

This is a nightmare compared to Windows ... :(

This is the 1% of things that Windows and Linux do better... and it seems Apple cannot accept they "nned" to copy it. This 15 min (extremely useful) video would take 1 min to explain in Linuz and Win...
