    Windows is more friendly to use. This is powerful but on Windows you literally just click on the icon on the dock (taskbar) to see your windows for that app. Hold down Ctrl to switch between each window for that app. Windows also has Mission Control (Task View) but there's less need for as you can just switch between apps from the taskbar anyway. Windows 11 also groups app windows together, one of the main Stage Manager. Windows also easily lets you snap two windows side by side, something you can only do on MacOS by going full screen and Windows 11 takes it further with window snapping. All you do is hover over the maximise button and you can arrange up to four windows side by side. It's all very simple. No muscle memory or configuration. MacOS is powerful window management remains an over engineered mess. Stuff bolted on top of other stuff. When they could just let you click on the icon on the dock to see all the windows for that app. Why overthink it.

    Thank you @Joel. I really appreciate the quality of your instruction - pace and detail is excellent. I have learned so much from just 2 of your videos so far and reduced frustration with optimizing the features of stage manager and multiple desktops. Just one small tip can make a huge difference. I've been using the Mission Control for many many years. It works just as well with a mouse and hot corners as with the track pad. I love it! I usually have 3 desktops open, sometimes a fourth. You can set one of your hot corners to display all your windows like you were doing with your trackpad here. I've been loving that feature for a decade!

    One of my favorite tutorials I have come across. So helpful for the every-day use. I am constantly frustrated with the open windows and trying to navigate between them. I am not a fan of the new operating system layout either. I thought it was clean and simple before. One other frustration I often have is when I bring up the calculator and it switches me to another page. I want to be able to have my app full screen and use the calculator staying on top but have been unable to figure out how, if anyone has that answer. Thank you.

    Hi @thehonestman26! In addition to Stage Manager, I exclusively use the trackpad on my laptop to utilize the 3 and 4 finger gestures to do mission control among everything else. So helpful to get a Birds Eye view of all overlapping windows. From my experience, if there is an app in Full Screen Mode, nothing can go on top of it. Even with the new feature of adding widgets to the desktop doesn't go on a full screen window. The only possibility would be the Notification Center. If you're in full screen mode with an app and you bring up notification center, that does overlay on top of the full screen app, but there is no option for a calculator in there that I can find! seems a bit silly! I even downloaded a bunch of calculator apps on my iPhone to see if I could do it on there and have it sync, but that doesn't do it either! THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know! If this video was useful, I’d love for you to SHARE it with on social media and say how it helped you! Hey - terrific video thanks. I was hoping you would speak a bit about how the features of stage manager and mission control interact, as I have found this to be really problematic in some instances. For example, it is possible to drag windows from one space or desktop to another, and this works great with stage manager switched OFF. With stage manager on, I get really weird behaviour, including the window I moved existing in the new space, but not being editable sometimes (I have no idea what governs whether this happens or not). Other times the window will not be movable in the new space: you can drag it to a new position but when you let go of the mouse button, it just returns to its old position. The strangest behaviour though is that the window in the new space sometimes tries to resize to a slanted thumbnail like the stage manager thumbnails, except it is not in the far left of the screen but somewhere in the mid-left half of the screen. These quirks make it impossible to work efficiently with dragging windows between spaces with stage manager ON... at least for me. The other incredibly bizarre and irritating quirk I've experienced is often when switching between spaces/desktops, the app in focus in the space I land on will display for the first fraction of a second, but then the focus switches to one of the other apps or app groups within stage manager. For the life of me I can't imagine why this would be desirable especially because the app being switched to seems random! If I could know that the app in focus in a given space will always remain in focus when I switch away and back to that space, I think I could live with the other quirks, but this one makes using spaces and stage manager together a bit of a nightmare for me. Anyone with any tips as to what causes this and how to fix it would receive my eternal gratitude.

    Hi Joel, Just upped my MacBook - Sonoma (m series). Wondering if you can solve a couple of questions for me. Love spaces and your video, just rewatched to remind me. Also love trackpad on this new MBP! Questions: 1. the plus mark on the spaces bar moved to the right. Over an hour looking for settings...can't find how to switch it to the right (correct to me also right handed) side. My muscle memory is annoyed. I am sure I can work around it but uhhhhh! 2. Mission Control shows in applications, but I can't drag it to my dock. phhhh 3. Unrelated to this video, I have been using voice over to read as I follow along and make notes in all my "how to" pdfs. I changed a setting to highlight the current area that is being read - it manages the screen too well - I can't keep it where I want it long enough to highlight with markup. Do you happen to know how to reset that - to Not highlight the current section that is being read? (another hour hunting! - I defer). 4 MISS YOU!

    Hi Joel, just found a great deal on amazon through your link for 4tb ssd. Is there a big difference between the san disk extreme and the extreme pro? Geez the extreme was 60 ish % off! Question: on your tutorials how do I tell which OS you are on. Everything (features of apps) changes so fast and I am watching vids from years ago. Almost no-one references the os or iOS or in my case osx (not really!)

  • @Learnwithjoel

    @Learnwithjoel

    10 ай бұрын

    Hi @ny6901! There would be a slight difference between the SanDisk Extreme and the SanDisk Extreme Pro. The main difference is the Read and Write speeds. Every memory card and hard drive (either external or internal, SDD or not) has a read and write speed. This matters depending on what you're doing. For example if you shoot a lot of high resolution video like 4K or even 8K, you need memory cards that have a higher read and write speed. Otherwise the information comes too quickly and the memory card can't keep up. Same for video editing on a computer. I you do a lot of video editing as an example with multiple cameras or very high resolution, if your external hard drive is not fast enough, it will have a hard time playing the content in real time. The SanDisk Extreme Pro specs are: Read Speeds: 2000MB per second Write Speeds: 2000MB per second The SanDisk Extreme specs are: Read Speeds: 1050MB per second Write Speeds: 1000MB per second I hope that helps. Also good point on the what macOS or even iOS version. I should start putting that in the video description below or call out during video if I remember! Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! Hi @stewarthughesstewart! Yeah, the System Data is something that can fluctuate greatly and it really controlled by the Mac itself. Check out this Apple Support article below: Change Storage settings on Mac support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-storage-settings-mchl3d437fbc/14.0/mac/14.1.2 "System Data: Contains files that don’t fall into the categories listed here. This category primarily includes files and data used by the system, such as log files, caches, VM files, and other runtime system resources. Also included are temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. You can’t manage the contents of this category. The contents are managed by macOS, and the category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac. You can manage your data that falls outside the other categories using the Finder or the third-party apps that created it." I would say restart you Mac often and make sure you're up to date. This is something that many people experience and it can be quite frustrating! THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know! Thanks for your response re System Data Joel. I have done all the cleaning up (optimising) I can do using Apple’s recommendations but of course I cannot touch System Data. Since I wrote to you it has expanded from 194GB to a staggering 292GB, more than half of my 512GB storage. The major software that I use on my Mac is Cubase and I am scrupulous in moving data to external back up drives. I have also backed up the family iPad and iPhones and transferred those backups to external drives as well. I turn off the Mac daily and it is up to date with Sonoma (19GB!) I know you love your Mac but Apple’s determination to get us to use the Cloud, and pay for it, and the price it charges for internal memory is borderline fraud in my book. Cheers, Stewart

    Has anyone found a way to assign different safari windows to different desktops. I’m guessing not if the whole app option is controlled by options-assign to. Update-If I open mission control and drag and drop the safari window into the desk top I want it stays there.

    The problem I have with Stage Manager is you cant make other apps sich as small apps like calculator to overlap unless you add them in the same group.

    Great point @deevocg6692. There are some limitations. What I find a little silly is that there are widgets that you can overlay and have on each screen, however something as simple as a calculator is not even an option from Apple! This is powerful but over thought compared to how Windows does it. On Windows you literally just click on the icon on the dock (taskbar) to see your windows for that app. Hold down Ctrl to switch between each window for that app. Windows also has Mission Control (Task View) but there's less need for it as you can just switch between apps from the taskbar anyway. Windows 11 also groups app windows together, one of the main Stage Manager features. Windows also easily lets you snap two windows side by side, something you can only do on MacOS by going full screen and Windows 11 takes it further with window snapping. All you do is hover over the maximise button and you can arrange up to four windows side by side. It's all very simple. No muscle memory or configuration. MacOS is powerful but window management remains an over engineered mess. Stuff bolted on top of other stuff. When they could just let you click on the icon on the dock to see all the windows for that app. Why overthink it.

    Yeah bro, Stage Manager is really a multitasking booster. You have to combine Stage Manager with Virtual Desktops. I always open 9-11 Desktops for specific purpose. Every desktop runs perfectly with it's own Stage Manager. Amazing productivity. Windows's multitasking features still far behind.

    Crazy bad take. Windows has had their equivalent of Spaces for a long time. Not to mention window management is horrific on Mac. Alt-tab on windows alone is more powerful than any of these so called features.

    Why is the dock full of applications which are not running? Isn't this a waste of screen space? It obviously is hard to track running applications with that. Just put the running apps there and tracking running apps or switching between them should be fairly easy. Your solution to use "Stage Manager" for app-switching is weird, it will steal even more usable space from the screen. I don't get it. o) And then, maybe just use ALT+Tab to switch applications + windows? No need for "Mission Control" and touch gestures. You Mac users make your life unnecessary hard, hu? If you can switch applications with keyboard (ALT+Tab) and the left hand being over they keyboard anyway, you don't even have to move any hand when switchin applications or you can do mousework with the left hand in sync with what you press on the keyboard. I should also do some training videos I guess.. o)

    Hi @ytbone9430! I don't think there's any right or wrong way to multi-task on a Mac or any computer for that matter. There's always multiple ways to accomplish a single task The Dock and the sidebar of Stage Manager can both be hidden which can then provide the maximum amount of screen space. I'm assuming you're a windows user as one of the main keyboard shortcuts to switch between apps is "Command + Tab" not "ALT + Tab" You should totally do some training videos! Everyone learns differently! THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know!
