I presumed this would probably just be pointing out all the shortcuts I already knew from the last 12 or so years of Mac usage, but no, new useful stuff with snapping and jumping to left or right! Great! Turns out I wasn't procrastinating and wasting time after all! :D

Now I'm home and tried them on my Mac, I don't think some of the newer ones seem to work on old MacOS High Sierra. Are some only in later OS versions?

Yep, compared with a new Mac and sure enough: the jump to left/right and the hovering over the green button menu works on newer OSes, but not old High Sierra. Not sure what version it came in with, but High Sierra support/security updates finally ended in December regardless, so it looks like I'll be forced to buy a new Mac anyway. I've totally rinsed my money's-worth out this good old MacBook Pro though, so I'll finally get about a 10x performance increase with the upgrade at least! 😜

Same! But so many shortcuts, most of which aren't in system settings to learn and turns out I have been a lazy Mac user for 20 years and dont know stuff all. I just want a hard copy of every single shortcut that I can't change settings when I get excited watching Garys other videos and then I completely forget them all or somehow can't type letters and takes me 20 minutes to realise its because I thought pointer control turning on does no harm. I wish there was an export option of every single modifier key functions to have on hand before I go and make up my own. How does all of this fit in his brain... thats the coolest part!
The most sophisticated window management system nobody's even aware of. Except Gary.
I've been wanting to do this 10:19 for FIVE MONTHS. THANK YOU SO MUCH
You Sir, are a lifesaver for people switching to Mac from Windows. Excellent channel and tutorials.

I've just made the jump from Windows 10 to MacOS, Gary has been my Mac Guru, love the channel.
As a lifelong Mac user I feel humbled to learn new tricks with windows. Seriously, no pun intended.
Oooh, LOVE the SNAP function!
This is so useful, thank you. I've been a Mac user for so long and window management has always driven me crazy-until now! Cheers!
I've been a Mac user for years, and I still learned something from this video. Thank you!
Omg finally found maximise! None of my Google searches came up with the answer. Coming from Windows and not being a fan of full screen on some apps, this was a godsend. Keep up the good work.
Just found your channel and have subscribed. I was a windows gal for as long as I can remember right back to Windows 3.1 and now have my first Mac that I am getting comfortable with.
Thank you Gary, this was very helpful.
Super! All these years using Macs and no idea of most of these tricks! Thank you.
Great help Gary. Always good useful content mate.
Thank you so much! I'm new to macOS and was looking for easy ways to manage my windows. This helps a lot!
Another great tutorial. I do use a utility because on my Retina iMac I prefer to set up one-third and two-thirds window sizes (especially for my web browser), but this was a great overview that mentioned things I didn't know.

This video helped a lot. Thank you.
Very useful!! Thanks so much!
Finally! I've been trying to figure this out for a very long time ha! I no longer have to shut down Premier Pro and reopen it. Thanks for this :)
This one is great!!
This video was super helpful 👍
Woo Hoo, first viewer Gary. Thanks much. I always learn something from you.
This is very useful for someone coming from windows. It is not as convenient as windows, but still very useful! Thank you!
Simple explanation with examples. Great! While two windows were being explained I thought there can be only one left side menu for both windows. Just imagine it can both windows can be part of same left menu. Like Parent & Child.
Great tips!
Wow so the "key" to organize window is opt/shift to do it like i usually do in Window, so helpful thank you!!
You sir, are a Mac Savant!
Wow! So very helpful. NOW I get the snapping thing AND option drag. I should have figured the option thing out, myself...duh...Thanks!
This is so helpful! I’m always frustrated by windows overlapping, disappearing behind each other, or things like help screens or notifications popping up in front of what I’m working on. Now if I could just prevent windows from scrolling up and disappearing behind the menu bar.
former Windows users, you are here for 8:43 trust me on that.

Coming from Windows, this was a great video. I really need to set up the shortcuts..
Nice!!
very helpful, havent had a mac since Big Sur and never knew of these shortcuts haha
DUDE! I haven't touched a Macintosh 28 years until recently switching our whole company to MacBook Pros and "window management" is killing me. This will help big time. I had my Winderz machine tricked out with a second keyboard where the keys ran AHK scripts to manage windows. I don't think I'll ever have this Mac that dialed in but I'm still learning. Thanks for the video.
Thanks

Lots of info, thanks. What I didn't find was a way to set the default size of a window with sveral file folders displayed in it. A frequent issue, becquse my MacBook has its own idea of what size to open for each window.
Freakin great! thx!
It's funny how Mac is usually dimmed as super-convenient, but in fact Windows and Linux nowadays are way more intuitive and easy to use. So thank you for these tips, they are super-helpful!
Don't forget that when you're tired of all those windows cluttering up your screen, you can option click on the red close button to close them all immediately.
I'm running Mojave 10.14.6 How to have the size and position of various windows of different app's remembered & recalled? Example: TextEdit: I create one, size & position it, enter some text, save it with the name TEST and quit the app. When I open TextEdit again, and then go File > Open Recent > TEST, it opens small i.e., not the size nor the position that I had previously customized. So, how to get the size and position of various windows of different app's remembered & recalled the next time they are used? Thanks!
I do miss the feature to tile windows…any suggestions?
That was terrific, Gary. I thank you for it. There's one thing you didn't show us, and I have not found a way to do it: to easily put a Finder window bang in the middle of the screen (good for us visually-oriented people). Have you found a way to do this?
@willyumsstudio

Make the window the full size by option+double-clicking the corners or double-clicking the title bar, then option+drag a corner to shrink while staying centered. You can add in the shift key to keep the aspect ratio the same.
This was so helpful. I have a question I hoped would be included. I have a mac mini with two monitors. There are two windows that I want to always be on my right monitor (email and calendar) The left one is used for everything else. When the computer is woken from sleep the email and calendar windows have moved - usually to the middle of the left monitor and I have to manually move them. This happens many times a day. How can I make them stay where I left them?
@macmost

If all you are doing is putting it to sleep then they should stay where they are. Not sure why it is moving, sorry.
😎Wow - more tips I had no idea about thanks so much! :-) Gary, quick qn. Can you recommend an external backup drive for iMac 🖥? 1TB should do. I've no idea about Solid State Drives Vs Hard Disk Drives / USB 3 / Thunderbolt. I just need a backup , nothing fancy but preferably quiet! Couldn't find any vids on your channel about this topic. Hope you have some hints 🔆

For backup, get a HDD as you don't need the advantages of an SSD. Any drive with good ratings at Amazon will do. But if you think you need a 1TB, get a 2TB. Look at the prices and you'll see very little difference. Maybe even 4TB.
@EddieSkyZ

👍Thanks so much Gary! Appreciate the advice. The HDD seem less expensive than SSD, and you're right ...makes sense to boost memory capacity with little in the cost difference! Appreciate your help 😁
how can I make a window top transparent in Mac?
It is good to learn those tricks. Question: can we save the resized and repositioned window so next time when we open it, it will stay the size and position we have changed? Thank you!
@macmost
3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the situation. If you open the same location in the Finder for instance, it should open with the same position. But a new Finder window with a new location would be seen as a completely new window. In general, if you like the position of a window and want to keep it, just keep it open. Hide the app.
These simple skills are all the more important now, in combination with Stage Manager; especially filling half the space without actually creating a new space. Creating a new space (by maximising or tiling) is the last thing you want when working with Stage Manager! Now I can have the best of both worlds: 'tiling' and Stage Manager.
Hi Gary, Is there a way of setting a default size Finder window, (including width of columns in List view), so each time you create a New Window, it appears the same size? Thanks.

Thanks. Some very useful tips. I really liked the tip of using keyboard shortcuts for moving windows. But annoying how some apps have "Move Window to Left Side of Screen" and others had "Move Window to the Left Side of the Screen" ... the extra "the"! As you rightly pointed out, need to get exact wording so therefore, the shortcut works for some app and not others!

Moving and changing the size of finder windows is easy. My question: How can you drag the "File Save Dialog Box" to a different location? Often when saving a file the dialog box pops-up and covers-up information you want to include in the file name. How can you move the "File Save Dialog Box" to view the screen beneath?
Gary thanks for these helpful tips I have a random question about multi-device sound is there a good way to change the volume while on multi device output? \

I'm not sure I know the answer to that. I suppose if that is bothering you, try a different position and keep trying until you find something that works for you. I'd imagine it has a lot to do with your size, posture, the height of the table vs your chair, and many other factors.
Is there a way to have finder windows open in the center of the screen? It's something I'm constantly doing and wonder if there's a better way

Double-click on a corner to go to max size. Then Shift+Option+click and drag any corner inward and it will shrink all sides keeping centered.
Gary, where do you find out about many of these details, e.g., the various modifier keys in conjunction with dragging or double-clicking? I've looked in Apple's own public-facing documentation, and can't find these details. Do you know of some repository for all these secrets? Thanks!

How about a keyboard shortcut to place and size current window in center of screen using portrait 8.5 x 1 / 4x3 aspect ratio as compared to widescreen 16x9 aspect ratio? Is there keyboard shortcut to hide [ vs minimize ] all app windows? Is there a keyboard shortcut to restore all app windows associated with the most recently hidden [ vs minimized ] app windows that were in the foreground? What's your recommendation for utility that lets you maintain cmd + c[opy] clipboard stack and access that stack using something like shift+cmd+v or control+v keyboard shortcut similar to windows?
@macmost
2 жыл бұрын
Look in the app menu and you'll see that Command+Option+Hide is usually "Hide Others" (hiding ALL doesn't make sense as something must be there). Not sure what you mean by "hide and restore current window" -- hide is for the app, not the window. You can't hide just one window. As for centering a window, you could create a script to do that, but there is no built-in shortcut. As for a "Clipboard Manager" there are a ton in the App Store. I like CloudClip myself. But there are many other good ones.

Which app are you trying it for? Are you making sure the shortcuts you are adding match the menu items perfectly? Do you see the shortcuts then appear in the menu?

Is there a way to completely center a window?
@macmost
3 жыл бұрын
You either need to use a third-party app for window control, or create something in Automator (kzread.info/dash/bejne/iH-Gr9qMpszKhps.html). Otherwise, just drag it to the center, as close as you can get.
but why when closing and reopening it, it doesn't keep the size previously resized?
@macmost
2 жыл бұрын
Closing the window? If you close a window it is gone. It can't "keep" anything because it doesn't exist anymore. When you open a new window, it is a new window even if it has the same document or is showing the same content.

The key on your keyboard labeled "Option." It also has the symbol ⌥. Sometimes people call it the "alt" key, which is what it is called on a Windows keyboard.

@@monogramadikt5971 For a 4K screen you should be able to go to System Preferences, Display and select the Default resolution (try that first). But if that doesn't work, try the scaled resolutions. Set it to 1920x1080 and you should get the HiDPI "retina" equivalent. You shouldn't need any special software or to edit and configurations files or anything like that. The only problem is that you are running a very old version of macOS and I'm not sure if that will cause any problems. Can't you update? You want to use 1920x1080 if you can as using 2560x1440 on a 3840x2160 screen will mean things won't be sharp as the pixel dimensions can't be evenly divided.
