Unbelievable Gary. I first bought a Mac for playing around while still using Windows. Then it became my main system. I started to use it to organize myself by getting the chaos out of my head. But now I had the chaos on my Mac. Now Gary comes into play to help me a lot to use the capabilities of MacOS to get this chaos sorted out. Your tipps were by far the most helpful. So much appreciated you to play a big role in helping me getting my life organized. Thanks a lot. I think I owe you some coffees.

I think my two biggest annoyances are 1) Finder doesn't stay in Icon view for all folders/sub-folders (this is likely because I chose list view for a moment but I wish it would reset or inherit icon view from the parent for next time. 2) By default Finder allows folders and files to be anywhere in the window. To me that just looks messy and unorganized. I constantly have to do Cleanup By > Kind.

I really love this video. What brought me to it is a general frustration that I have with find... basically that it isn't Windows Explorer. I want a navigation pane. The alternatives out there all seem to push the same dual-pane feature which I find zero value in. I basically want a List view that isn't a heirarchy... when I click on a folder, it goes into the folder, but still list view, and then the navgation pane (not the breadcrumbs) follows me around. Do you have any suggestions there?

Hi. I have a doubt with Finder. A little mystery. Maybe someone can help. I got my first MacBook, M1 MacBook Air. I was testing stuff and really liked how in Finder I could change the size of the thumbnails with the Trackpad using 2 fingers, but then I was setting up stuff and updated from Big Sur to Monterey. Later I realized I couldn’t change the size of thumbnails in Finder anymore by pinching… was it the update to Monterrey or something I turned off/on? Do you know?

I have this small problem in Finder column view... when files are added, for example a download finishes or if drag and drop into a folder with other items, the alignment of the file icons gets offset a little. The spacing between file icons becomes inconsistent. I usually have to click out to another location and back in, and that resets the alignment correctly. I’m still on MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 but I’ve noticed this issue a few versions back. Does anyone else experience this? Or know how to fix it?

Use Command+Up to go up, or Go, Enclosing Folder. Back works just like in a web browser. It goes back to the previous location shown in that window or tab. Try using the sidebar to jump to several locations: Documents, Desktop, Applications, etc. Then Back, Back, Back to go back through them.

  • @macmost

    @macmost

It will remember the size, but it is folder-specific. So if you set the size while viewing one folder, close the window and then open a new window that is say, Documents, then you get the size for the Documents folder. Note that you don't need to close Finder windows. I never do. I usually have one Finder window always open with several tabs. I never worry about the size because I never close it. I hide it if necessary, but never close it.

I like using Column view as I find it best for navigating around the Finder. However, it annoys me that the column widths are NEVER automatically resized to fit the length of the file names. I wish there was a setting to allow it to automatically ‘fit’ the column widths to the longest name in that column when opening a window. I realize that occasionally a very long file name with a small window size may mean that you can only have a single column visible, but this would not happen often IMO. Is there a way around this annoyance?

What I would like to be able to do is to have Finder, in Column view, adjust column width to fit the width of the widest displayed element. I'd appreciate a tip on that. As for the thing about hiding messy files on the Desktop, a simpler option I rely on regularly is to use multiple desktops and switch among them with Mission Control. I don't bother to keep Mission Control visible in my Dock, as it is so accessible (on my iMac) as F3. Multiple desktops is handy for other reasons. For instance, I keep a hobby on one desktop, a collection of some work things on another, etc. Actually, in each case I have two screens (using an extra monitor) and they switch together.

Double-click on the line to the right of that column and it does just that.

My complaint still exists and it used to not exist in older Mac OS's. When the size of the folders in the list The Column view are shrunk, the Name width is compromised instead of the other columns. This wasn't the case in older OS's like Lion (the Name column's width wouldn't shrink even when you shrunk the folder down to a very small size). I wish they would make this optional to go back to the old behavior without adding something like XtraFinder to my OS

Thanks again! Question: as a Shortcuts rookie, I am wondering... is there a way to make a shortcut that will run the "Kill Desktop" terminal steps to hide desktop items? And, also to reverse it? And to get even fancier... could I create a voice command for my Mac that would run the whole process? "Hide Desktop Items"

  • @macmost

Do you mean the Shortcuts app? Yes, sure. You can use the Run Shell Script action to run the Terminal commands if you like. But I would caution that this is a Terminal command not meant to be run over and over all day. It may have issues. If you really need to have your Desktop clean that often, I would just keep it clean. Don't put anything in the Desktop folder. Use your Documents folder for all of your files.

@@macmost Thanks. I get it. I was hoping there could be simple way to "clear the deck" for screen sharing during Zoom sessions...even tho I rarely share the entire screen. Tho part of why I rarely share my screen is because it is often cluttered. I suppose a better solution to this Zoom dilemma is to set up a separate Mac User for me when I do Zoom sessions. I assume you do something similar with all your tutorial materials and settings shareable from that user account with a clean desktop.

@@victrolux Yes, I use a second Mac user account for many reasons while recording a tutorial. But if I was just doing zoom meetings, I wouldn't want to switch user accounts and have to deal with setting up zoom and other things in two accounts all the time. I would simply only share a single window, or keep my Desktop clean (which I do anyway).

Nice!! Do you happen to know how to get the gray and white bars in Finder's list view to disappear? (To make the background plain white and clean, as it is in column view? I have searched for ways and have not found anything that works so far. I watched your video in the hopes you would have this solution but didn't see it.

There is really no "Recents Folder." What you are seeing is a list of your recent files, from other folders. See kzread.info/dash/bejne/a5aNm8V9g7XAqMY.html to understand.

The only problem I have with the get info /show inspector is that it always by default throws the get info window to the far left of my screen when I would love to have it appear on the right side instead. I haven't found a way to make that happen or at least when I do a get info on an item that the window pops up where I last had it.

Great video, thank you..let me ask something: I’ve set file extensions to off (to be hidden), as I do NOT want to see them. However, despite having set extensions to off, each time I create a file, the extension is still displayed in finder (wheareas i don’t want to!). This means every now and then I have to select those new files, right click for “more info” and manually tick to hide extensions. How do you keep extensions hidden permanently hidden? In Windows, if you select to hide extensions, they are always hidden for all files (existing ones and new ones too, so no need for manually turning extensions off as I have to do on my Mac). Thank you.

If you create a file with the extension, it will assume you want to see the extension. So if you name a file "test.txt" then you'll get "test.txt" with the hide extensions turned off. So just name it "test" instead of "test.txt."

Thanks for the video. But the main annoyance is not addressed. Finder periodically "forgets" default view settings (eg. group by kind, name, etc.). And there is no way to make it to "remember" them for some reason.
