Indeed Gary does a much better tutorials than the Apple dudes .

As a Mac Sys Admin, I agree on everything. Except on one crucial point. The OS update. Before upgrading to a major version make sure that your softwares, drivers, peripherals will still be compatible with this new OS, especially if you're a professional. In some cases an incompatibility can cost a fortune. But I wish more of my customers would follow your advice.

Also make sure compatibility is given, switching to newer Hardware... VMware Fusion, Radiology Systems like Osirix, .... all not suitable with M1-Macs ;)

This OS update is a killer, some of my software is (old licenses, but good still) will simply not run if not (OS 10.15 or whatever the OS was when I purchased the license). Hate it.

and what about the compatibility of all those time machine back ups after an upgrade! Is it just me or is it normal to lose access to older time machine back ups when upgrading to a new os in mac book pro? Is it necessary to make a bootable external with the old os? Or is there a way to plug in the same time machine back up and somehow find all those years of back ups? I started just doing drag and drop to an external ssd for documents. I have never had to restore but not having any access at all makes me lose faith in time machine. Wish there were sterner warnings about upgrading. Would love to know what the heck I did wrong!

I've had a malware problem for over a year now on a 2010 iMac that I have in addition to this 2020 iMac. And what I didn't want to do after viewing a host of iMac adware removal procedures that required a download was to download anything for disposal. With the help of this channel I was able to locate and move to trash the adware that seemed to be able to appear and disappear whenever I looked for it before. You revealed to me different navigational means to find and locate the "TotalAdviseSearch" in the Launch Agent & Launch Daemon folders. I've searched for them before without success. And the video that helped me find the adware had nothing to do with adware or malware removal go figure. So I owe this channel a great appreciation for the help that serves all of us Mac Users. What a relief to get rid of that adware without downloading a fix what a nuisance it was. Thank you very much!

XL spreadsheets no longer worked when I upgraded to Catalina, so I decided to learn Numbers instead of buying the latest MS office. I just got a new Air & I'm having issues with the Catalina, as well! I paid $300 more than my 2017 Air & it's worse than my old PC! How can I switch from Catalina to Mojave on this new Air?

Great video! I am definitely one of those who hesitates on upgrading my OS... and now I can't, since I have a mid 2011 iMac 27, and it will only let me go up so far.

Always interesting and logical recommendations. I enjoy listening to these clearly presented practices. After migrating from Vista 11 years ago I haven’t looked back. I run a MBP for most computing and an iMac with beefed up RAM for video editing. Catalina on both at this time. Everything is either Mac or open source, no Microsoft programs. Many users just can’t break away from MS products. The iCloud is value for money and really continent. The only weakness I feel is Apple’s dreadful spell check on most devices, probably due to a licensing issue, and Dropbox which just doesn’t ‘work’ for me.

Great stuff as usual. That said, if you *rely* on a particular app or two then definitely do NOT immediately upgrade any software until you are confident everything works and is compatible. Not all developers are able to achieve compatibility as soon as Apple ships the next update. Spoken as someone who counts on Adobe Audition working perfectly at all times. :)

First one hits the spot ... my laser printer, Laserwriter 4/600 to be precise, purchased for £600 in 1996 - still works just fine.

Great video, as always. You are so right about ink jet printers drying up and being generally awful. If one doesn't print a lot, that is an even better reason to go laser. Like you, I rarely print, but when I do, my black and white HP laser works like a charm. I've had it forever, probably 8-9 years. I paid less than $200 for it, and they're cheaper now. I can't remember the last time I replaced the toner. I did recently inherit a color laser, but rarely use it.

Another option if you rarely print is to use a library or print store for high quality- to keep the printer from taking up space!

I can be away from printers for a long time. Being in 4 different locations I have thrown out a few printers. Laser printers don't dry up, so when I do need to replace one that is what I will do. However, I called epson years ago when a wf3450 wasn't printing and they taught me how to clean the print heads and do a nozzle check. (in the menu) Works every time. I was warned not to run through it more than 3 times. I love that printer. The other wise maintenance trick they taught me was to print a sheet at least once a week. Considered leaving it on and printing remotely but I am far to energy aware for that!

I'm really trying to get a handle using the file and folder system. also a top priority is learning to create documents. mainly like event flyers. I never even took typing in school (early 80s) so some of this is painfully slow. gonna keep watching your videos. THANKS AGAIN

I keep two backup drives plugged in all the time. Backups have saved my Kirsten many times over the years. I just lost my 2014 Mac mini due to a disk error. The new Mac comes this week. I know I’ll be back up and running within an hour with all of my files in tact.

When you have a problem, find out if its supposed to work this way at all. One of the greatest advise that man has ever given Gary! I learnt this the hard way. There are just one too many things that Apple does differently, which just makes clear sense, but typically we are not aware or are so used to complicate simple stuff, it appears broken to us. Rule of thumb, Apple technology does not fail, if something is not working, it is the user - you doin it wrong.

The ISP-email thing is a very big tip. I know a lot of people who used their ISP-provided email service for years, moved, and were shocked that they couldn't keep their email address. Most ISPs allow mail to be forwarded from the old address but some for only a month and then it's completely gone. You might alert all your business and personal associates about your new email address but you can be sure that some just won't update your contact information. I've been using AOL email since 1994. Their server-side spam filtering is great and in 25 years I've never experienced a major downtime event or connection problem.

Excellent advice. I too have been using Macs since 1986, and I would endorse everything you say. If there is something your Mac doesn't do, check all available apps. Someone else will probably have noticed it too, and written an app for it. Of course, if it is really good, Apple will probably include it in a future OS upgrade!!

I keep thinking about what you're saying about inkjet printers. They were always futzy in the old days but I always figured that's because the technology was new. But they have remained futzy. I've got an old color inkjet that my wife bought a ton of ink for that doesn't work more often than it does. I have a monochrome laser printer in another part of the house that I never even think about. Sometimes I have wireless connectivity problems, but it ALWAYS prints perfectly. I've been considering a color laser, you may have just helped me decide.

Great info Gary, Howerve I cannot upgrade to the newest operating system. I keep getting a ‘“lost connection message”. I have two Imacs and they both do this. My internet isn’t the greatest but I am not losing connections. Ive tried a lot of things but finally just gave up. I’m running Mojave and I like it so I guess I’ll stick with it.

5:42 - Some other good reasons for keeping the OS up-to-date: - The changes over time are small, but if you don’t update for a long time, the changes might seem abrupt - If you leave it too long you risk having no upgrade path to get to the latest version of the OS. I see far too many people make that second mistake… and then moving from their old computer to the new one is a real pain in the neck. Fortunately Apple is very, very good when it comes to maintaining an upgrade path, but eventually even they have to draw the line.

Always great advice. Not sure which tip I liked the best. Fortunately I’m one who isn’t afraid of change because every time I listen to your tips I tweak my methods (for the better.) I would disagree with you about your admiration of laser over inkjet. I won’t elaborate here because that discussion is lengthy and has to be taken in context. Short story; I agree with using as few hard copies as possible and that for text based documents lasers are easier.

I resuscitated my old Time Capsule, the flat version, with a 1tb disk in it to use for Time Machine 😁. Put it in bridge mode. So it’s just a node on my network now for backups.

I've learned something from every video of yours that I have watched. Thank you so much. However, I'm going to disagree with you on point #6 of this video (Update your Mac). Twice I've had to revert back to an older operating system because a program I use doesn't work with the new operating system. The latest is I updated to Big Sur from High Sierra. Quickbooks doesn't work in Big Sur. I downgraded to Catalina and it's working again but not as well as when I used High Sierra.

Gary, thank you for this video. It tells me you have seen it all as far as Apple users are concerned. I am guilty of delaying installing upgrades, so I will now embrace them after watching this.

You helped me by providing examples about what happens when they don't sleep.

Wish I had found your page before subscribing to the some software folks that promised to clean up my Mac but made it worst.

I use a laser printer for normal day-to-day document pricing, but I have a nice Canon Pixma Pro ink-jet for printing photographs. It's been a great printer for that purpose for several years now.

As far as for upgrading your OS, yeah not always. My late 2013 iMac is listed as supported by Catalina and that's the last OS it supports, but after having on my iMac for a week, it was a complete disaster and completely messed up all my media libraries Turns out I was not the only one having this issue and seems maybe Apple was being optimistic in saying a late 2013 iMac could handle Catalina. Maybe it can but only within certain parameters as far as music/video/book libraries are concerned. Luckily I had a perfect snapshot of my previous setup and was able to revert back to Mojave and have had no issues since. So I'll wait until I upgrade my iMac to a newer one.

I disagreed on the iCloud but i 100% agreed on the sleeping mode. Very well said!

Gary the fix problem (8) is me! I found an issue (for me) with the Dat& & Time cell format and I reported it to Apple as feedback. I found a work around, but it would be nice to have them consider a change.
