The Super-Secret Mac Keyboard Shortcuts Almost No One Knows About

Ғылым және технология

macmost.com/e-2511 Beyond the menu bar keyboard shortcuts and the ones you can add in System Preferences, there are a set of keyboard shortcuts called KeyBindings that you can use when writing. These customizable keyboard commands can be used to move around in text, manipuate selections and even insert frequently-used words and phrases.

    You are one of the best creators of tutorials on KZread. You hardly ever edit your videos...You flow through what you teach because you have such a thorough knowledge of whatever you present (I am a teacher so I know how to spot a great teacher when I see one...YOu are one of those great teachers). Thank you for providing such useful knowledge. Keep up the great work.

    This video really helped me out ... by coincidence. Let me tell you a little story. I bought a fully programable keyboard (ErgoDox EZ from ZSA). One of several techniques I used in configuring the layout of the keys is called "home-row mods"; placing the modifier keys on the home row for each hand so tapping one of them produces the character but holding it becomes holding a modifier. More specifically, tap/hold looks like this: 'A'/shift, 'S'/control, 'D'/option, 'F'/command, 'J'/command, 'K'/option, 'L'/control, [semicolon]/shift. Works great and it was easy to adapt to. This keeps my hand centered on the keyboard for all chords (multi-key presses to produce key combos or keyboard shortcuts) and progressions (multiple key strokes to produce one thing like [option] + 'N', 'N' to produce 'ñ'). It saves time since I no longer have to move my hands around the keyboard when using modifier keys (which I started using years ago to save lots of time moving my hand back and forth between the keyboard and mouse a thousand times a day). I use well over a hundred chords including many custom ones and only counting the Mac chords, not the Windows chords I use, as well. That's also after changing some app specific ones so they match. For example, I changed the chords used in Safari, Chrome, VSCode, Finder, etc. to cycle through tabs they all use the same two (one for each direction) which reduces the number I have to remember. Anything I can do to reduce time away from the home row can make a huge difference over a twelve- to fifteen-hour day on my Mac, plus no more pinky stretching to use shift which reduces RSI pressures. *But*, home-row mods technique breaks a common, natural typing technique called "rolling." This is when the new letter is triggered before the previous letter is released. Basically, the faster you type, the more likely it is any transition from one key to the next in a word will result in rolling. This is nothing new. For anyone who has used a hammer-style typewriter knows about jamming keys. That's often caused by rolling. Computers handle this very well, usually. In the case of home-row mods, however, if you type, the word "same," for example, and you roll from the 's' to the 'a', you get [control] + A instead; and the beginning of the paragraph now has "me". Since I am a touch typist, I catch it right away, but if you aren't better get that skill before trying this out for yourself. If I hadn't watched *THIS* video just weeks before getting the keyboard I might have thought there was something wrong with it and try to return it. I love this keyboard including how easy it is to set up really powerful techniques; of which home-row mods is only one. ZSA makes it super simple to set up multi-function keys using "tap dancing" and layering. Other boards require you to learn something called QMK to enable tap dancing options like tap/hold so I likely would not have a programmable keyboard. Tap dancing is the only thing that makes this keyboard even feasible for me and I don't have time to learn QMK much less write out the code for hundreds of keystrokes. Thanks, Gary for saving my split, mechanical, programmable keyboard future. You helped me save time, be ever-more productive, and cure my RSI!

  • @macmost

    @macmost

    Not sure what you mean. So capitalize the first word of the first sentence of a paragraph but not the first word of the second sentence of a paragraph? No way to do that. You just need to capitalize manually as normal.

    Fun! I had heard the Mac included many of the default Emacs keybindings (I believe that's what you demonstrated at the beginning). I don't use Emacs so I never used them. That .dict file format looks different from anything I have seen. It certainly isn't EmacsLisp. I would like to think Apple would have clear documentation about how to create a keybindings file, but Apple documentation has always blown hot and cold. Extensively detailed in some cases, utterly missing in others. Thanks so much for the links!

    Thanks Gary, is it possible to pass selected text to external app, process it and replace it with selection. If you want to know the use case, I’m using English and Arabic keyboard layouts and some times I find myself typed several words before switching the keyboard layout, so I have to delete those words and type them again with correct layout. I was wondering if it’s possible to select and pass the text to an app which maps each character to corresponding character to the other layout and return it for replacement.

    Chances are you weren't using any key bindings before (did you use Control+b? Control+t?) so it is just a matter of avoiding regular keyboard shortcuts. No way to see a list if them all as it varies from app to app.
