I’ve been a Windows corporate / government trainer for over 20 years. I switched to Mac about 10 years ago. I have always been aware of hidden files in both systems, but after watching this video... I don’t think I can be referred to as a ‘geek’ anymore. Thanks Gary, I am gonna watch this one a couple of times.

One of my favorite shortcuts is a keyboard shortcut for adding a "degree" symbol in temperature. Simply type the number 85 and press "Alt Key + 0". That is the number "0" not the letter O. Results are 85º

One thing I use all the time is "Disable Javascript" in the Safari Developer menu. I've even made a custom keyboard shortcut for it. It comes in handy on a lot of web sites.

Just found your channel and this video is fantastic. The only thing I'd like to suggest is that some viewers may not even understand some of the basics, like me; but that's the reason I'm here searching and watching YT vids. An example is when you say the "Debug menu in which case you'll need to run terminal". I don't know how to get to the terminal. Just food for thought. I may be a more basic user than you want to target. Anyway, thanks for the helpful info I'm looking forward to watching some of your other videos!

SFoxvideos The interface is intuitive. The innards are not. Even knowing your way around the Terminal commands isn’t enough to discover all the features on your own. Two of my sons worked at Apple and they know about hidden things that Gary hasn’t even touched on - like Easter Eggs.

That is up to you. I love using iCloud to do it so then I have access to my photos everywhere I go on all my devices.

There used to be the symbol for deg celsius and fahrenheit in the emoticons but they disappeared in an update some time ago, Is there a way of adding them back? or some other option?

They are still there. Use the search field and search for "degree."

Is there a cache on the Mac that contains data of everything recently opened, no matter which app it was? Does it grow to massive size over time?

Not an easily accessible one. You can see the recently opened items in several places though.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe for the #9 you have to disable the key repeat first or else it would keep entering the presses key

Αρνί Γιούλμπασι: There is a slight delay before the repeat function kicks in, and that might be enough to be able to select the alternate character. You can set a delay for the time to do a repeat. That’s another “hidden” feature. In iOS in Settings or in macOS in System Preferences, search for “Key repeat.”

Thank you so much @macmost, I wonder if you could help me with a problem, which is probably quite trivial but causing me a head ache !! I have my Mac set on daylight (not dark mode) but my Finder (and quite a few of the apps) are showing/typing fonts as white on black - which I find really hard, being dyslexic. Ive rebooted and looked everywhere to change to black on white but to no avail. I know its in the setting somewhere because when I am online ie Google - its fine (black on white) Thank you in advance xxx

@@macmost Thanks for getting back so promptly. Yes, I’ve checked all the settings in both and there doesn’t appear to be any option to change the font & background colour.... any suggestions as to which it might be.... i’ve messed about with all of them and nada 👎🏼

This video is from 3 years ago, so perhaps the window has changed a bit over 3 versions of macOS.

I could not find the SHOW ICONS under view show view options. Catalina 10.15.3 (19D76)

Show Icons WHAT? Make sure you are in the right mode (Icon, List, Column, Gallery) for what options you want to see in View Options.

Tried opening the debug menu but the "terminal.app" link didnt open anything. Can you go into more detail with that hack? Thank you!

First, make sure you are typing it exactly: defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeInternalDebugMenu 1 Also make sure in System Preferences, Security & Privacy, Privacy, Full Disk Access and make sure Terminal is checked there, otherwise commands like this won't work. If you don't see it in Full Disk Access, then click the + button and add the Terminal app.

oh man...seeing the examples in the video...I LOVE how large and readable the text is. I have a 3440X1440 ultra-wide with a Mac Mini M1...great sharpness and resolution as you'd expect, but all system text in any MAC window is TINY! I've seen video examples where the MAC allows you to select from 4 text size options, but oddly, my M1 doesn't seem to have these options...Chrome works great..it has a magnifying feature similar to a PC that lets you scale the contents of the browser but curiously the Mini itself doesn't seem to have this for all system windows. I could of course turn the resolution of the monitor down but then bye bye razor sharp clarity. There has to be some kind of fix for enlarging system text and windows whilst still keeping a 3440 X 1440 resolution, no?..

1440 screens are tough. I know they are popular among gamers, but a 4K (3840x2160) works better for work because you can do HiDPI resolution (1920x1080 AKA "retina"). With 1440 it is either 1440 and text is small, or 720 and it is too big.

@@macmost ahh, was afraid of that....I do multi-track audio, and the wider viewing area of the 34" screen is an incredible boon to working more efficiently. I guess I will get used to smallness lol.

What are you trying to do, exactly? Typically, you put the Bluetooth device (speaker, headphones, etc) into discoverable mode, not your Mac.

how the heck informational channels like macmost who has been here for more than a decade still has 200k subs

If you want to hide a document you made, put it in a location you can remember, then put a period(.) as the first letter of its file name.

@@sheboify It works, but you have to do it via Terminal. _mkdir ".My Secret Folder"_ You can also use _chflags hidden "My Secret Folder"_ to make it invisible without a leading period.

Hidden files are usually system and maintenance things. They are hidden because they aren't things the user needs to ever access directly, so they would just be visual clutter. All computer systems have hidden files.
