Some more favourites are 1) ⌘+Tab to swap between apps, and 2) when using ⌘+A, remember that Shift+⌘+A unselects everything. The Shift key reverses the shortcut, in other words. It also works like that with some other shortcuts. 3) When in a Finder window, you can change the presentation to icons, list, or frame by using Ctrl+1 or 2, 3, to suit your needs. I prefer List view, so use Ctrl+2. The best thing is that Finder remembers that choice for that window every time you return to it. The Shift, Tab, Left Option and Right Option keys all have interesting functions. When looking for accents in foreign languages, for example, the Option key plus a selected letter gives the accent, and then the next letter you type will give that accent on the letter. (Option +E gives the acute sign, then hit E again to type é. Or use Option+E followed by A for á, for example.) You can select the grave, circumflex and umlaut, plus a few more, in this way. Also the Left Option key plus the number 3 gives me the musical sharp sign (the US pound sign) and the Right Option key plus 3 gives me the Euro symbol, on a U.K. keyboard. On a U.S. Keyboard you can find the U.K. pound Sterling sign ( £ ) like that. Much of the Greek alphabet, and some typographical symbols such as the paragraph symbol § can also be found on an English keyboard via the Option key. You can also use a couple of other tricks. For example, when typing a chemical formula, you can use the ~ symbol plus a number to give suffix numbers, such as H₂ SO₄ instead of the incorrect H2SO4. Furthermore, you might be able to use raised numbers, as in mathematics or footnote digits, by using * plus the number. This can give you things like 7² or PI³ and See footnote ⁴. If that doesn't work for you, then remember that you can set up your own keyboard shortcuts in System Preferences | Keyboard | and selecting the appropriate option. I use keyboard shortcuts wherever I can remember them, and often much prefer them to using a trackpad or mouse when typing, or working with files. Many of them are very useful, good for productivity, and fun to learn and use.

I use the Mac since 1990 and saw the "Show Clipboard" menu item for the first time today *cough* To my defense I use a clipboard manager called Clippy so perhaps that's why.

Excellent tips

Option + Command + I (Inspector) comes in handy when I want to delete some of the stuff piling up in my Downloads folder. I have almost forgotten about it. I love this command better than the related Command + I (Get Info). Also, An excellent trick using Fn + E to bring up the Emoji! Thanks, Gary!

Great video as always Gary. I have to agree with your list but thanks for the tip on the option modifier on Get Info (particularly). I think once a keyboard shortcut gets into more than two keys then depending on how close they are, they can lose their immediacy appeal. Copy format is on the boundary of this for me and I have placed the copy and paste format icons in all my keynote, numbers and pages menu bar as I find this much faster. One shortcut i had to create was the show format inspector in numbers and keynote and I then attached the custom shortcut to a mouse button (Logitech Mac mouse), which I use with my thumb… but that’s now a different topic 😁 Thanks again!

My top three: 1) spacebar to stop/ start video/ dvd or audio/ music 2) command Q to quit apps ) cmnd X C V Z and Y...

for me, the best is shift command arrow to switching between tap within a browser, command m to minimise the app. command q to close to app. command t to open new tab. other stuffs I use gesture or touchpad to do.

Gary, what a brilliant tutorial. Wish I'd known about the extra functionality of with Finder ages ago. In one of your tutorials, you taught me as a shortcut for sleep and I used this all of the time with my old 2014 iMac. I have now got a new M1 iMac - so fast! But having now got a touch ID button instead of eject, this shortcut seems to have disappeared. You haven't listed this either in your great pdf for ventura shortcuts. Is there a way of getting this back? Also, is there a quick way of displaying the symbols for shirt, command, control and option, rather than having to type them in all the time? Thanks as always. You can press and hold the power button for a second and it locks your Mac. Then it should sleep shortly after that. But you can always assign a custom shortcut to Sleep in System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, App Shortcuts. As for typing the modifier symbols, use FN+e or Control+Command+Space to get symbols like that. The "command" symbol is "place of interest sign." ⌘

Good stuff. If done by use, I would have command+tab right at the top. It’s by a huge margin the most oft used shortcut for me. Also it works on iPad when you’re using Universal Control (as do the trackpad gestures, it’s pretty cool). Anyway, thanks!

I had a section at the end on how Command+tab missed the top 10, but cut it for time. I looked closely at why, and it just consistently lost in the first two rounds to shortcuts that had fewer alternatives. So use was often, but the "can I get by without it" factor was low. But that's just for me. This whole exercise is very subjective.

1. I FINALLY know the difference between Inspector, and Get Info! Couldn't figure it out on my own. 2. I was surprised Cmd-Shft-5 (calls up all the screen shot commands) didn't make the list. 3. For whatever reason, I only have to touch the Fn/Global key to call up emojis, I don't need the "e". Thanks Gary!

Command+Shift+5 just missed the top 10. If you have a newer Mac keyboard with the "globe" on the FN key, there is an option in System Settings, Keyboard for "Press 🌐 key to" and you can set it to do that. But not available on older keyboards.

Thank you Gary for an interesting video in which I learned a few more things today. One Question I have about my I-Mac is when I open an email that might have a video link or an MP4 file, my computer will not play it instantly like my I-phone or I-pad will. It always asks my to download the file. Is there a way around this or a setting to correct the problem? Thanks.

For Pages? So you are talking about a table in a Pages document, just to be clear? There's no keyboard shortcut. It is something you need to add to the table. If you were using Numbers you could just select the cells or the column and see the sum at the bottom.

Hi Gary , I think I have asked you this question before but I didn’t understand your answer. Is there a way in apple to take few audio files in a finder file not in music , and play them in a row without the need to play each one of them individually. On windows it’s called play all , so you grab the files you want to listen to and you press right click - play all , and then it just opens the music player and plays these files you choose, and you can press the back or forward to change between these tracks. How ever on mac I can not seem to find this option.. please if you can tell me how or if it’s possible on Mac . Thanks for your great teaching it’s really really helpful ❤

Th most straight-forward way is to get a media player app like VLC. That will do it.

Is there a possibility to paste from a clipboard list. In Windows I like the windows + v paste. It allows you to paste not only the last copied item but opens the history of copied text, pictures

Gary, have you ever heard of/seen issues with external Time Machine backup drives not working after MacOS updates? I've had it happen twice, once after updating to Monterey and again this weekend after updating to Ventura, where the TM drive mounts, but when I try to open it I get a spinning ball and Disk Utility can't repair it because it says it cannot be unmounted and then freezes until I unplug the drive. This has happened with two completely different external drives with two different Mac OS updates. I'm starting to think I won't use TM anymore in the future.

Haven't seen that. If Disk Utility can't repair the drive, then it suggests a problem with the physical drive not what is on the drive. Hard to tell though. Was it the same drive? Time Machine just writes and reads files to the drive like anything else.

@@timz9862 Note for Time Machine backups I highly recommend a HDD, not an SSD. You need size, not speed for a backup. Get a much larger HDD for less money.

@@macmost They we’re both pretty large drives, so the storage space wasn’t the issue. I’m wondering if the SSD format is just bad for Time Machine?

@@timz9862 No, it should be fine. It is just that SSDs are small+fast+expensive and HDDs are large+slow+cheap. You want large for a backup drive, and speed doesn't matter as much. So better to get a 14TB HDD and spend less than a 4TB SSD and waste the money. As for quality of the SSD, it could be that you just got bad ones. Quality SSDs cost a lot.

control + command + space does nothing for me and I"m running sonoma? (and I dont have a world symbol on my keyboard so the new one is a question mark too?) help?

I don't know why Control+Command+Space isn't working for you. Have it tried it in multiple apps? Did you re-assign Control or Command keys to something else? The globe key is the FN key on older keyboards.

The one vital shortcut which has been deleted is the long-established and we'll-known quick two-step shortcut for shutting down or sleeping the Mac. I wish that Apple would bring it back. My workaround uses six key presses. Not ideal.

Have you tried just creating your own? I wouldn't do it for Shut Down (you should never be shutting down that often that you need a shortcut). But for sleep I usually just press and hold the power key (Touch ID) to lock the screen and then let it sleep from there.

When you look up "nerd" in the dictionary there is a picture of you... haha... amazing methodology.

I'm still unable to memorize most of the keyboard shortcut 😭

Thank you very much! Two of my favorites are ⌘T to open a new tab and ⌘W to close a tab. This works in browsers (I use Brave and Safari) and the Finder.
