Create A Distressed Effect with GIMP
In this tutorial I’ll be demonstrating how to use layer masking to apply textures to objects in GIMP in order to create a distressed effect. This is good for giving your designs an aged, worn, vintage sort of appeal.

You never disappoint with your to-the-point, no-fluff, easy-to-follow tutorials. Before I click on one of your videos I know I'm going to get quality and learn something without feeling overwhelmed. You're the best!
Great tutorial! As always! Short, to the point, but perfectly explained.
Great tutorial. Straight to the point, no nonsense, and everything explained at just the right pace. And thanks for the free textures!
I appreciate the no frills nature of this video. I just needed to know how to do one little thing, and here you are, giving me *exactly* what I needed, and nothing more. Earned a sub for when I need to learn more gimp stuff.
Been looking for something like this in G'MIC and other filters. Your solution works so much better and is far easier to control. Thank you!!

I think I can finally set a conclusion that you create videos to any audience, ‘cause should you take the basic tools explainations out the video would last probably less than 1 mite. Grats for the video!

Just discovered this channel recently and I already know I'll be watching tons of your videos. Very clean and informative, just great tutorials. I've got a question though: What version of GIMP are you using and what additional plugins/themes have you installed?

wow it actually worked! thanks! subbed too :)
Love Your Tutorial & wanted to to know if you can do a video On doing a 3D Lettering Logo & Thank you So much
Thank you, Oh Gimp God!! :D
TQ!
I love you.
Do you have any idea, how to create a B&W (or just a few color) drawing out of a photo (a face, dog, etc). I'm thinking about a similar effect to your zombie hand logo, just not based on the shadows, but on actual features and the (sometimes even overlapping) geometry. Thanks for the awesome tutorials btw, you're awesome!
Thank you so much. How would you make the effect color instead of transparent?
Awesome video! Was the texture image something you created using tools in GIMP?
What up Nick! me again haha, would love to know your top 10 if not Font Choices and also a recommendation for 2020 😁⚡Would love to follow your content side by side.
@logosbynick how do you get your document history locked on the top left like that? I like that much better than what I'm doing. Great vids!
Hi Nick, I followed the tutorial step by step but in the end, my shape remained as inconclusive because - yes, I can see the layer mask on top of the (SVG) I wanted to texturise. Some of the texture is sprawling outside the solid shape underneath - but I don't know now what to do next in order to see the shape only as a cut clear shape with the texture inside. I would also need to take it back to my Inkscape to insert it as part of my illustration. What would you suggest? Thank you for any comments. I know I will need your comprehensive GIMP course! :-)
thanks for the tutorial! I just have one question, how do you get all the tools on the left on that tool docker? I only have the basics on mine.
Hello, I already tryed to do this 3 times but everytime i do it creates in reverse, what i mean by that is that the grunge overlay isnt making this white pattern like it does in your video but it creates white picture where i can see my background picture trough the particles that were supposed to be white
I wonder if this will work with this leather texture I only ever seem to be able to make with the mosaic from filters> distorts
Could you give us a link to the Wilbur image, the fonts, the textures, and the background used in the finished composition at the beginning of this video?
Hi how can use roland bn 20A with this program?
Am I supposed to create another canvas to put the distress effect then copy?
Would this same process work for making "rusty" images i.e. a rusty car or rusty metal?
Great tutorial.... Btw do you still use Photoshop or Illustrator for any of your work ?
@LogosByNick

Yes I use both. I find Illustrator really useful for certain tasks like batch exporting, CMYK, and converting vector logos into layered PSD files.
Hi Nick, so when I copy and then paste the texture nothing happens, I see the thumbnail at the lower right menu section has been added but nothing happens to the picture
Hi Nick! What font do you used?... I talk about calligraphy font...sorry if my english is not correct, I'm learning jeje

how i make an emoji in gimp or inkscape?
How do i make the dots black?
i guess it doesn't work like this on gimp 2020 or i just dont know how to download it
Say you wanted to give a texture to a Batman symbol. How can you do that to the symbol only and not the whole layer??. Thanks
Hey man I downloaded your textures and put them in the texture folder but they aren't showing up in gimp when I go to textures? Any ideas? Thanks for the video.

not sure if it's the image i want to use, but whenever i do this the white parts of the texture look extremely low quality
