Some are thinking that I came up with this. It was Ed Schraider that came up with this many years ago. Lesson here is to listen to your elders 😎

Just an FYI to help others. Called ARP and they couldn't, or wouldn't identify any of the numbers but said one number meant it was 4.75" long. Kinda just blew me off since I was a retail customer. Talked to Summit and he tried to be helpful and said none of the numbers were in their system but he thinks it was for a KB block years ago. Didn't know if it was a head or dampener stud. Without getting a good number from ARP he couldn't order it. Edit . . . delete irrelevant info.

I updated the description with some research I did. I was able to find a kit number for the nut and one for a smaller OD washer. But a google search for the stud turned up several suppliers that claim to have stock. This is how I got the longer one myself. I hope this helps. If it becomes to much of an issue I will just order some and have a kit available at cost.

Thank you for the additional effort, James. Reputable companies like Jegs & Summit indicate plainly state "not available". Other google "smoke and mirror" companies indicate in-stock or special order! I'm not willing to order then go through the hassle when they can't deliver. Still a lot of educational value in your video. Thank you.

Thanks for solving the problem and the video, James. I called ARP and they don't have any part numbers as shown on your drawing. Is this a "special" kit from you? Or is there a different ARP part number than on your drawing?

Those are the numbers I used to order them from Summit Racing. You will most likely need to call them.

Is the loss of the cross sectional area on the crank really worth it? I understand going to a larger diameter stud increases clamp force, and that really helps coupled with the installation of the diamond encrusted washers. I guess I'd like to see a graph of clamp force vs torque before slip of the diamond washers occurs. Also what is the peak torque input onto the crankshaft. That would determine if just using a stock diameter ARP stud and washers is good enough or if drilling the crank for a larger stud for more clamp force would pay off. I think the biggest pay off is the installation of diamond washers because it moves the torque input onto the larger diameter of the crank and further in.

To start the first hole basically cuts the threads so there’s essentially no reduction in material strength. What I didn’t explain well in the video is that the standard bolt puts all the stress on that undercut. This is where the failure occurs. By moving it back it moves that stress to a larger diameter section. This actually compresses the small undercut instead of pulling on it. Keep in mind most failures happen with manual transmissions because of the radial force put on the crank from supper rpm changes. BTW I’m working on a real solution to this 😎

Would the crank need to be balanced after doing this mod?

  • @cobraengineering

No. As long as the hole is centered and square. Just make sure they balance it after the key is cut.

I havent looked into it much, do the 5.4/5.8 gt500s have issues with cranks and the blowers as well? Love all the tech vids btw.

Yes. Even coyotes. Basically the crank diameter is too small for blowers when spun hard.
