Couple of Ithaca model 37 featherweights 12 & 16 gauge 1937 & 1957

Two more Model 37's join the collection, both New York vintage guns. 16 gauge from the first year of production 1937, and a nice 12 gauge bird gun from 1957. Solid and fully fictional, the featherweights have always been a favorite of mine.

I believe the one on top from the serial number is a 1975 not a 1957 ?

Yeah. Got the newer 28. A 20 gauge circa 1971. A 1990 made Deerslayer Police Special 12 gauge plopped a wild boar at 70 yards. Bought the newer Waterfowl the year after I got the 28. Taken alot of grouse & bunnies with the 20 & more recently the 28. Scored a nearly new 1997 made M87 Turkeyslayer several years ago. Agreed. Superb usable shotgun.

The 37 was first a John Browning design sold to Remington wherePeterson and a co engineer redesigned a few parts and Remington produced it as a model 17 in 1918 or there about for 10 years then Remington moved on and Ithaca picked up the Patton’s and produced it as the 37 model. Just a bit of information. Both outstanding shotguns.

Browning either designed or his designs influenced a number of different shotguns over the years. His patents were used for the Model 37, and also for the Stevens 520, and 620 just to name a few. I am currently working on a 620, no a suffix so it was produced prior to 1939. I have long been an admirer of the Winchester 1897, and 1912 shotguns owning several including the Winchester 1893. The one shotgun I would never be without is the 1897 trenchgun, it's the real thing, not a Chinese knockoff, best shotgun I ever owned. That thing will lay down a field of fire so fast that with a blink you might miss it, no disconnect, just like the Model 12.

Ithaca did make a 10 gauge, but it wasn't a Model 37 pump. It was a semi-automatic called the Mag-10 I believe. Iraqveteran8888 did a video on one.

I have 10 gauge shotguns, but they are both doubles, 19th century H&R, and a Belgian made gun who's name I forget. Years back I made up some BP shells and shot both of them just to say I did, but 12 gauge is just fine for me. I never got into semi auto shotguns much, I have an ex British military stainless steel Beretta A300 riot gun that I love, and an older High Standard that I haven't played with yet, but that's it.

I dont know if someone mislead you,but the 12 gauge you have on top was manufactured in 1975(as per serial # on the right side of the receiver). There should be no serial # on the barrel,as all post #855,000 guns barrels are interchangable. Now your 16 gauge on bottom should have matching serial numbers, one marked on the barrel, and one on the very front of the receiver just above the magazine tube.A good serial # website is diamondgunsmithing.com.Either way, old Ithacas have a lot of history, both in Manufacturing and in the deer woods with lots of Dads and Grandpas!

I will look into it when I can, the date probably came from the seller, I don't recall having any reference books on Ithaca's.

As a owner of a number of 37's I want you to know your 100% correct on the serial number, my newest (most modern) is a 1961 and looks more like his "early" 37, to me the style of his forearm tells the story from 50 yds away, the year and style just didn't fit when I saw it..

Let’s all get together and demand that here ammunition companies pump out more 16 gauge cartridges . Hunters and sporting clay users start buying 16 gauge. It’s the most perfectly shot patterning round out there.

With all that's going on right now with shortages, hoarding, price hikes we are lucky to find even the most common off brand discount 12 gauge birdshot. I have 16 gauge because I picked up some with ammo hoards I bought out over the years, mostly paper shells. I have people complaining to me they can't find the most common of ammo like .22 LR, or 9mm. Mostly they find it but the price is way high for the one box they are restricted to buying. 16 gauge isn't dead, just uncommon when most shotguns are 20 gauge or 12 gauge.

Is the barrel removable on the 1937 model? I don't believe the barrel is interchangeable, but just wandering if the barrel is removable. I have a 1949 16ga, and I have not tried to take the barrel off yet.

Yep, the barrel removes easily. Just unscrew the knurled end of the magazine, partially unlock the action, turn the barrel 90 degrees, and it comes right off. Takes about ten seconds.

Great video. I acquired a model 37 mfg 1942, great condition. Am seeing conflicting info on whether or not steel ammo is ok. Thoughts or advice?

  • @RockIsland1913

One that old I would stick to lead shot, 60's and up would be better for steel shot if you keep that choke no tighter than modified. Choke is the key with steel shot safety, lead will compress to squeeze through a tight choke, steel will not. I don't think a 1942 M37 would burst of otherwise fail from steel shot ( if you watch that choke) but steel shot is hard, you could start scoring the bore with a lot of it being fired. Good rule of thumb with shotguns, shoot them with the ammunition types that were available when the guns were new, and your not likely to go wrong. For 1890 that would be black powder shells, 1942 pump shotgun, high brass 2 3/4" lead shot.

RockIsland1913 Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. This gun looks 10 years old, not nearly 80 yrs. If I hadn’t checked the s/n I would have just put modern loads down range. 😬
