    Just bought a 12 ga. M37 last Saturday. It was produced in 1956 & has 30" full choke barrel with a solid rib. I cannot wait to shot it & use it next duck season. I also have a M37 20 ga. that was produced in 1978. That was a Christmas present when I was 11 yrs old. Oiling the 12ga. today took me right back to that Christmas day. Both are great guns. Nice video--thanks for sharing.

    I own both these models, a 1925 Model 12 riot gun clone & a 1959 Ithaca 37. Be careful, as old wood & steel shotguns are addictive. Nice guns!

    Thanks for the info. Yes the interrupted thread design makes the dual action bars not necessary unlike modern designs like the 870 and 500 which rely on the magazine cap to keep the barrel to the receiver. I think the Ithaca is a great shotgun, I like it more than the Model 12.

    I have a model 37 and it kicks so hard! My new Modsberg 500 Retrograde doesnt hurt so much lol. Does the model 12 have a recoil similar to the 37???? Also for some reason my mod 37 only holds 3 shells.

    I have owned both. I like the Model 12, but prefer the Ithaca Model 37. I just find the action and the machining of the Model 37 so much more interesting. I love the bottom loading/ejection. So unique. To each their own though.

    Looks like the stock on the Ithaca is that of a deluxe repeater model due to the checkering pattern. I've seen photos of the Ithaca line up circa 1964 & the deluxe had the same checkering & a factory recoil pad.

    I read some where that the model 12 had the 5 shot magazine tube because it was designed in the era of the market hunter. More rounds in the mag meant more ducks in the boat at the end of the day.

    I don't know where you heard that. It's one of the most reliable shotguns out there because there are so few moving parts, but the parts that are in there are big chunks of machined steel. However, it balances so well due to the way Browning designed it. It's an upland shooter's dream. Go shoot quail with it!

    Browning, Winchester Ithaca. All good names all have awesome guns from the older shotguns to the newer ones you would be hard pressed to find a bad one of the group. The Browning A5,Maxus, and Bps are all awesome shotguns. Then you have the Winchester Sx3/Sx4 follow by the Sxp are also good shotguns little to no issues with those shotguns. Then you have the Ithaca M37 a reliable work horse of a shotgun with good quality parts at a good fair price. All these guns will take a beating and never flinch. The company I would never buy a firearm from would be Remington. Ever since Freedom group took over the company has been making pisspoor guns with low quality parts at a high price. No thanks I'll stick with the other 3 instead.

    Most modern shotguns are all good, it just depends if you want the fit and finish of the vintage guns. Also if you're a waterfowl hunter, then the steel capable barrels with removable chokes. However, as I shoot more vintage shotguns, I prefer the plain non-ribbed barrels with fixed Mod or Full chokes, very versatile and easy to carry afield. I find modern guns don't carry in the hand or in the nook of your elbow as nicely and don't balance as sweetly.

  • @canadiangunnut
    @canadiangunnut12 жыл бұрын

    The new Ithaca's are probably arguably the 'best' Ithaca 37's ever made. The steel, CNC machining, choke options, walnut used etc. are top notch. Now because of modern CNC, parts will drop in and fit due to such high tolerances! However, the new guns won't be as smooth or slick as the originals from the 30's-40's. You can always buy an older Ithaca that has a serial number after 850,000 and get a new barrel from the factory. Look on the gun forums for reviews. All the ones I've seen have raved.

    I cannot stop watching this video! I finally bought a M12 three weeks ago. It was made in 1942 & has a 30" full choke barrel. The gun has great character. The butt stock does have several cracks, one of which was repaired at some time & has cracked beyond the repair. I did order a new stock & will refinish it. Not sure how I want to do it yet? Was considering tung oil, but read some where (probably a forum) that the Winchester finish of the '40s & '50s was a stain (to give the red appearance) & a lacquer top coat. What do you think? Thanks

    Awesome video...however, I have to disagree with you on your Browning BPS comment. Yes it is made in Japan but compared to the Ithaca 37 DSPS (1970's Production) the BPS is finished significantly better. It has better engraving, bluing, and probably steel. The Ithaca has a smoother action and is all forged and/or hand fitted, where the BPS is probably CNC machined/not as hand fitted. I think they both have quality actions in their own way...

  • @bajorektom

    OH btw the "toggle" WAS later removed from the threaded "nut?" that holds the Barrel. I am told because it was intended to be used ONLY for disassembly, People would use it for torque in tightening resulting in a broken gun.

  • @bajorektom
    @bajorektom10 жыл бұрын

    My 37 also very smooth, "almost pumps itself". The newer interchangeable 37s have a much larger trigger guard. The fit isn't as nice. I believe guns like yours and my 1951 37 have the bird/ dog, scene "etched" whereas it seems the ones w/ the plastic fiber optic bead, or sight on a deerslayer, seem STAMPED?. My Grandpa, got mud jammed in the barrel and a big buck walked right up to him, he fired, and the barrel looked like a banana peel. The reciever was sold, because Ithaca wanted more to make the barrel then a new gun would cost. BUT I have been told that by taking a NEWER Barrel and filing down the 1st 2 threads they work perfect.. I have the opportunity to buy it back. My question is anyone ever heard of this idea? I'd like to hand down my 1951 to my Son. I own a mid 70s Deerslayer, But when I pull my vintage 37 to my shoulder, the bead is RIGHT there, and I have NEVER missed w/ the old 28" mod choke barrel.

    Yeah the BPS is the best made affordable pump shotgun on the market. The new Ithacas are really good too, but too expensive. The 70-80s Ithacas were the bad years when they went to King Ferry, NY, lots of impressed checkering etc. 40s-Vietnam era were probably the best. BPS and Ithacas are totally different besides the bottom eject feature. I like the weight and balance of the Ithaca more.

    My Father had an Ithaca 37 he bought after WW2. It was engraved on the left side with a waterfowl scene. Can you tell me what gun this was? My Dad gave this gun to an asshole cousin of mine who is still(30 years) in prison. I would like to buy a duplicate even though I still have Dads' Belgium Browning O/U that he bought in 1970 for $1300.

  • @canadiangunnut

    @canadiangunnut

    6 жыл бұрын

    It definitely feels lighter cause of all the machined metal removed. I think it's ~7 lbs in the 12 ga model but the balance and design is compact so it feels really light.

  • @bogenshutze
    @bogenshutze9 жыл бұрын

    They aren't "takedowns". They can have their bbl removed like nearly every other pump gun. Also, only the Ithaca has ALL machined parts. The model 12 does not share that attribute.

  • @goldwolf9995

    @goldwolf9995

    bogenshutze You may want to check your facts. Model 12's had a machined steel receiver and the internals are machined from steel forgings and is a takedown.

  • @hillbillyhansforlife2763

    @hillbillyhansforlife2763

    +Goldwolf99 No. Not all parts were machined on the Winchester. Also, every shotgun is a "take down", unless it is a fixed barrel.
