Classic Ithaca 37 Featherlight Review

#guns #shotgun #firearms
In one of the first episodes of Eclectic Collectin' Arsenal, Big Frank spoke about the matriarch of his gun collection. The Queen of the Collection: his 1938 Ithaca 37 pump shotgun. This gun is almost 100 years old and is still firing like a champion. Of all the guns in his collection, this is Big Frank's favorite. He has bought and sold 40+ guns since joining this hobby, but this lady remains with him through thick and thin. Let's see what the old girl can do.

I have one from '41 that I bought in Ephrata PA. It had a silver painted handmade plug in it. You can put 8 1 3/4 shells in it. It's a blast to shoot, and it hits everything you point it at. It really is a sweet piece. Nice vid.

Lower velocities yield tighter spreads. Past generations knew this and simply used larger pellets for the penetration energy.

Actually your 80 year old Ithaca is perfectly safe with any shotgun made today of the correct chamber length. Modern powder is not "too powerful" for it. It's not exactly a damascus black powder barrel. Just like a Model 1984 Winchester in 30-30 is perfectly safe to shoot with modern made 30-30 cartridges.

Its not the pressure from the rounds im worried about. She's just my favorite and I likely baby her. She is the one gun i will never sell. The others, I could one day. You know what i mean?

Ithaca Model 37 perfectly safe with modern shot shells of the correct gauge and shell length for the chamber. I would not use 'non lead' (steel, bismuth, etc) loads in older Model 37's barrels not warranted for use with non-lead shot.

I killed my first buck with an Ithaca model 37 at over 100 yards.

Why didn't you change targets between shots? The patterns would be easier to discern.

Wrong Zartan; The Ithica 37 wasn't developed by Ithica. It was developed by REMINGTON and was sold as the model 17, in 20 gauge only. Remington sales were disappointing, so they discontinued it. Ithica only started building it after Remington's patent exclusivity expired. I have a bunch of 37's and Remington 17's. Such an excellent design is the 17's and 37's, that Browning copied it calling their gun the BPS. Also, because it is a Browning you'll pay a lot more for it, but they sell a bunch of them.

If you want to get technical, ithaca had to wait for John Brownings patente to expire or their shotgun would have been out years earlier. I do take a compliment from being called Zartan though. Thank you
