Counterattack as a method of defense:
1. There are some situations in which passive defense or defense on the side where you are attacked is simply not possible, so it will be definitely not efficient. This is a sign that you have to look for a counterplay.
2. Understand on which side you have the best chances to come up with the counterplay. Typically, it is the opposite side of the board.
3. Come up with active piece play. In many cases, just pushing Pawns on the other side of the board appears quite slow, so it’s better to do everything to activate your pieces.
4. It’s a good method to identify the most vulnerable point in your opponent’s position and to find a way to attack this point with a counterattack.
