In this series about bishop endgames, you will learn how to play endgames with opposite and same colored bishops. These two types of endgames will be covered in detail based on practical examples which often appear in chess games. Not only will you learn different techniques and methods on how to win these endgames with bishops and pawns, but also techniques on how to hold a draw, like the so called “Fortress” in case you are down in material.
In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy will teach you exceptions for the techniques we learned so far. The biggest problem for the defender is the short diagonal, which is basically the key to win this endgame. But it does not mean, that a short diagonal cannot lead to a draw. If you play it wrong, it can end in a draw.
Summary:
It is also possible to deflect the bishop, so that the promotion square is no longer attacked/ so that the opponent’s bishop loses the control over the promotion square. This is mainly possible, when the diagonal is short. This is the main enemy of the bishop. In case the diagonal is long, this idea of deflecting is difficult to establish.
General rule: If the pawn is on the e- or d- file and you have an active king, the game can be kept a draw by use of the drawish pattern.
If we have a pawn on the b- or g-file, it is extremely important to stop that pawn as soon as possible, because if it comes to the 7th rank it is fatal, because the diagonal is too short.
If we have pawns on the a- or h-file it is very difficult to hold the game drawish.
If we deal with pawns on the c- and the f-file, the goal is to stop the pawn as soon as possible, but if the pawn reaches the 7th rank it is not necessarily a lost game. It depends on the concrete placements of the kings.
