Cottage Core 2023 Flat Cap Tutorial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

EDIT: THE LENGTH MEASUREMENT CALCULATION FOR THE TOP IS INCORRECT. PLEASE USE Circ/1.68 NOT Circ/0.94!
I put it out in a recent newsletter that I was really taken this year by the Cottage Core aesthetic for my menswear. I have always had a vintage feel to the way I dress, probably driven by my father's fashion choices. My favorite cap is a "golf cap" or Flat cap...sometimes called a driver's cap. It is an essential part of many looks in the cottage core style. They're soft, comfortable and super easy to make.
The pattern I have included in the video is a proportionate draft based on your head circumference. Just use the diagrams, measure your head and make the calculations. After that, just plot the lines and draw the shape!
The BEST part about the video is the use of up-cycled/recycled jeans for the exterior fabric. It gives us the opportunity to use a contrast stitching, it has a nice, middle-brow, working class feeling to it and the good feelings of re-using a piece of clothing to make something chic and new.
If you want to purchase the lining fabric, you can find it on Spoonflower.com

My books are mostly about 16th and 17th century pattern making and sewing.

    Oh this is perfect. I have a pair of corduroy pants that don't fit me anymore that would be great for this. My English great-grandfather and grandfather exclusively wear flatcaps, so I might as well continue the tradition 😁

    Perfect! As you embark on making one, please see the note in the comments that one of the calculations in the diagram for the top is incorrect. the overall length measure should be Circ/1.68 and not circle/0.94 as shown in the video.

    Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have a lovely flat cap after my late grandfather but it's slightly too big and I haven't dared to go in and try making the band fit me. Might still do that at some point but now I can make a new one to wear in the meantime!

    Great video! Your hat looks sooo good! Nice job! Lots of good tips along the way that really helps out in getting a nice finished product! I can't wait to make the first one because I already want to make a few different styles. Haha! Thank you for teaching us the ropes, Champ! PS Thanks for the correction on the last measurement, too. I was a bit lost drafting the pattern. Blessings!

    The cap turned out so well! Is grainline important for these pieces?

  • @themodernmakermathewgnagy215

    @themodernmakermathewgnagy215

    9 ай бұрын

    Yes and no...I would say the grainline on the brim isn't as important as the grainline on the top and sides. The lining doesn't really matter than much and can be cut at whatever grainline is most efficient. The felt, of course, has no distinct grainline. The grainlines I used are drawn on the pieces in the diagram.

    Fun video! Mathew, where do you get that wonderful thick felt. I've been looking for some like that for a project I have, but haven't been able to find it. (Multiple layers of craft felt won't work for the project, unfortunately. I may have to use leather if I can't find a felt like that.)

  • @themodernmakermathewgnagy215

    @themodernmakermathewgnagy215

    If you are going to use the multiple layers of thin felt...you need to channel quilt them together so they're stiff. Or use fusible between all the layers. But the felt I used in the video, I think I picked it up at Mood Fabrics, ages ago for a project. You can order similar felts online from various sources. I like The Felt Company: www.thefeltcompany.com/felt-materials/

    There seems to be a mistake in the pattern for the top part of the pattern. The longest measurement (circ/0,94) can't be right because that's almost double the second longest (circ/1,8) and would make for a really funny looking hat. Would love to know what the measurement should be :)
