    Thank you I've just bought this pattern to attempt making some caps from some fabric I've handwoven and your clear demo and instructions have given me the confidence and inspiration to have a go with it after a long break with seeing anything other than straight pieces for curtains etc.

    Isobel you are welcome! I would love to see the outcome as you handwoven fabric sounds fabulous! I would just suggest washing it first (not knowing what material you've used) as it could possibly shrink a little - I would also only baste the centre back dart as you can then adjust this if the cap is too tight or too loose - good luck!

    Success! I reviewed your video over and over again, followed your instructions to a ‘T’, and the final product turned out very well. I used a ‘washable’ wool, heavy sew-in interfacing for the brim, and medium-weight interfacing for the cap. The corners were still tricky, but I managed them with lots pinning and patience. Thanks again for the excellent video. Your tutorial is the best on KZread! 🇨🇦

    Hello. Very Helpful Video and Serendipitous as I purchased This very Pattern just as I found your Video. My dilemma or Confusion lies in Pre- washing or not Pre- Washing the Tweed. I'm going to be using Expensive Harris Tweed and don't want to ruin it before I ruin it Sewing the Hat ... lol. And if I use a Woven lining I would have to shrink that too! I've also seen many of these hats made on you tube by professional companies and they don't use any interfacing at all. Again, love the Video and will use it to make the Hat when I have everything in place. Agree that I would love to see a video of the Trilby? Or Fedora.

    Thank you. I am planning more videos - I just need to get round to them! I'm not sure that tweed will shrink much unless you boil wash, which is likely to ruin the tweed. You can use a woven lining - that is likely to retain moisture though so a really good quality lining material might be preferable- or a good silk. Proper Harris tweed should also come with one or two sew in labels proving its authentic- hope that helps and good luck!

    @@alancolclough1524 Hello again and Thanks. Yes it does help. I think I will go with a lightweight woven fabric for the interfacing. Poly Satin lining. I have good quality. Yes, it comes with the Harris Tweed label to sew on. I think ill just do a little (lot) STEAMING. With a Pressing cloth of course. That should shrink it up enough. Thanks again for you Attention. Hi Alan. Great job on the making the cap, especially working with plaid. Here are the problems I had…. 1. I mistakenly used buckram for all of the interfacing instead of just for the brim. It was much too stiff to work with. 2. Those two ‘corners’ are very hard to negotiate. 3. The stand is cut on the bias to enable you to ease around the crown. However, once you apply the interfacing it loses its ‘stretchability’, making easing almost impossible. I imagine that if the interfacing is also cut on the bias this would not be a problem. As I said, I used Buckram which will not stretch at all… my fault entirely. 4. I used corduroy and even though I was careful about the grainline when laying out the pattern, the crown has the corduroy lines going sideways in one direction. Best not to use corduroy, I think. Or cut the crown in two pieces and add seam allowance to the centre seam cutting line to allow for joining the two pieces. A question - is it possible to alter the pattern so that the crown is not so wide? Am I correct in thinking that I would redraw the pattern piece making it about a 1/2 inch narrower at each side? I hope that would not change the way the crown meets the stand. I have made one other flat cap using a different pattern with some success, although it was not perfect. I’m determined to follow through with this pattern. Yours is the best tutorial I’ve seen. Thanks for posting it. It is very helpful. 🇨🇦

    Hi! Yes buckram is a pain to work with - and isn't great as interfacing - I think the corners would have been easier without the buckram that would have been causing most of the issues. I found that pinning at 90 degrees to the fabric and pinning a LOT helps - also have the topmost the cap under the side as you sew - it makes it easier to hold and slightly pleat those corners . You can also sew the brim and leave the corners (I.e. from.just past one corner to just before the other) to secure the brim - remone the pins then concentrate on one corner at a time. I don't always cut on the bias for the stand - particularly if using a heavy pattern - if its a heavier material too there is much less bias stretch especially when interfaced. It can also depend on the Interfacing you use - non-woven will give anyway (depending on thickness) woven isuch more flexible but yes, would need to be cut on the bias - your other option is to use sew in - stitch it to the fabric just inside the stitch line then trim the excess so you have no interfacing at the stitch line. I can understand the cord could be problematic but I think it depends on what you are looking for - I would cut it so it runs front to back. If you do want to adjust the width - don't take it from the sides - if you do your stand won't line up properly unless you adjust that too. Take it from the centre - I.e. cut it from the centre back dart to the front peak - making it a dart at the peak so you go to a point on the front peak. You can then remove a strip.from the middle and keep the length round the sides that the stand will still match with - I'm sure you'll get there!

    @alancolclough1524

    Thank you. Yes that bit is tricky and puckers very easily (and like you I can always see an issue however small) - there is another option which is to make a small cut in the turn almost to the sewing line - it will help you move the fabric without puckering. I hope you get a great result 🙏

    Thank you! I would probably wash the Corduroy before making up as it may shrink and that's the last thing you want ! Double check the measurements as different fabrics behave differently - if in doubt - cut slightly larger than the pattern piece as you can always sew a larger seam to make it smaller - you can't however easily make it larger. I would probably use the darts in the back to reduce the size - so check the fit before basting in the lining (bear in mind once the ribbon is in it will be slightly smaller due to turning the ribbon to the inside - good luck!

    Thank you for doing this video. I have recently started some projects other than hemming with the sewing machine that we have. My small business of making and selling masks has slowed down and I have been looking for my next project. Being Irish, I own a nice tweed flatcap and have been struggling to find a pattern that closely matches the one I have. I have tried a few of the free ones available online but have not been happy with the final results. I did see this v8869 pattern in my local fabric store but $30 was alot to spend on my first pattern with it being my first sewing project from a pattern I could purchase. I enjoyed watching your video and will probably now purchase that pattern and give it a try. Can you tell me if there are instructions or patterns for different sizes in the envelope? My head is 60 cm around and I want to make sure I will be able to get the right fit. Again it was nice to see the final product from this pattern actually being made.

    Thanks Mark - yes Vogue patterns are quite expensive but they often have half price sales at many stores and I know that FabricLand have permanently discounted patterns - not sure if they have this one though. Yes the pattern has sizes - so I would recommend tracing each size - each size has imperial and the L 23 1/4 inches is equivalent to 60cm - good luck!

    Hi, do you mean how do you work out which size to pick? If so, then you use a tape measure around your head just over your ears to get your sizing - try the following link which also has a handy sizing chart. panamahats.co.uk/how-to-measure-your-head/

    how to you make the pattern for particular size head?

  • @alancolclough1524

    @alancolclough1524

    Hi, you have to measure your head - there are lots of tutorials on the Internet- but basically you measure across the forehead and just above the ears. This gives you a measurement in cm or inches and this equates to the pattern sizes.

    @@alancolclough1524 Thank you. but my undrestanding is that measuring around head gives head size not pattern hat size. that measurment is then devided by Pi and after that it becomes a mystery. all the tutorials i've seen show how to make the pattern but not how pattern size was derived.

    @@WV591 it does give the head size - the pattern size on the commercial patterns are based on head size - you would only need pi calculations if you are drafting your own pattern. I can't help if that's what you are doing- sorry.

    This is a Vogue pattern V8869 - there are other flat cap patterns available. The cap doesn't come down very far at the back - best way to measure is to go from the bump on the back of the head, just above the ears and across the forehead. You can also search how to measure fir a hat. Hope this helps 😊
