HOW TO MAKE the Moroni Trunkhose Part 1: Analysis and pattern making

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this talking head video, I go over my process for beginning a project. It begins with an analysis of the inspiration portrait and the things that I see when I examine it. From there I talk about the choices I am going to make, the fabrics I'm going to use and why. There is a promo for my upcoming Pattern Making class with Adobe Illustrator! After talking about all of the elements that go into my thinking at the beginning of a project, I touch on the project management app that I use. I also spend a little time talking about my renewed inspiration, the way I am going to approach The Modern Maker in this iteration and finally, a time-lapse video of my drafting the trunk hose pattern in Illustrator.

Love this video, the tip about using the eye for scale is genius. I've felt similarly a bit lost in recent times, and I'm also coming to learn that it is this crossover of creativity, business, and (surprising to me) spirituality that are letting me walk in the right direction. Really looking forward to learning how to sew paned hose, as they are one of the few things I've felt too intimidated to jump into making!

Can't wait to see how this turns out! Big fan of Moroni. I think you were still in New York when they had the show at The Frick. Did you get to it? Anyway, I was today years old when I realized that trunk hose with cannions started falling out of fashion (in some circles, or for a time anyway) in the late 1560s. They're there in The Night in Pink and Don Gabriel de la Cueva both painted @ 1560, but gone by the time he painted The Night in Black in 1567.

Fascinating right? I might be out of turn saying that they were completely out of fashion...as long as trunk hose are fashionable, canions seem to be present, but different periods and countries have varying prevalence. Honestly, for ease of wearing, I might still put a canion on these. The thought of knitting stockings so long as to reach the leg opening is a little daunting as I'm going to be knitting them in a "correct" gauge for the period...though they will have their own video.

Exactly. And it depends on where you are in Europe. Look at the 1602 portrait of Raleigh and his son. Cannions with the hose gartered over them.@@themodernmakermathewgnagy215

It is easy to forget that modern artificial light is mostly white. I bet that 'goose poop' green would look dull gold in candlelight.

Mathew, could the red wool possibly be tinted with a weak dye overwash to bring it closer to the desired hue? Just a thought. Another great video. ❤👌

I have thought about that...but decided against it. I don't want to ruin the color by accident as I don't have more of this red wool. Also, the shade of red varies, depending on which digital image one looks at...I think I can leave the color as it is. ALTHOUGH, I might do a test dip into some tea to see if I can yellow it a bit without deepening it too much.
