This video teaches you how to set up and weave a narrow band trim for 16th and 17th century clothing. With silk and metallic threads, everything that is learned here can help you make a great jerkin, jacket, doublet and even fancy corsets if you want. The technique of weaving trim quickly is one that is elusive for many people. I can teach you how to position your body, how to smooth your movements and show you the rhythm of weaving this Early Modern embellishment for your historical dress. Fancy Menswear of the 16th century in particular was covered in yards upon yards of "laces" as they called them. These tapes were often quite plain in their weave structure. Weavers would choose instead, to use the color and the occasional use of gold and silver to accent the appearance. Some extant garments have as many as 60-80 yards of trim embellishing them and making them stunningly opulent. Yet the technique of weaving the stuff is quite simple and easily learned. With a do it yourself (DIY) approach, and an explorational attitude, you can teach yourself to make this simple decoration. Who knows, it might even encourage you to create decoration and trims for you modern wardrobe as well! They sky is really the limit. In the beginning of the video, I talk about the end use of the trim in question. It will be sewn to a 17th century jacket and is the start of a suit for a man of the upper-middle class

That is a very interesting inkle loom that you have. I have 3, each a different size. I have never seen one like yours before! ✌❤🇨🇦

I love this video! I do, however, wish that there was a way to get to weave without having to do the warping. That is my least favorite part of the whole process. I can weave all day long but I dread the warping!

That’s why I show the speedy warping technique. I too, dislike warping a loom but narrow trim on an inkle loom warps up pretty darn fast.

  • @wingthorn

About how much do you have to allow on the warp for uptake/shrinkage/whatever? Can you warp up close to the length you want, or does the weaving process shorten the end product?

  • @themodernmakermathewgnagy215

All weaving will shorten the total length. It is the nature of the weaving. When you become familiar with your loom, you can prepare for the amount of uptake. Over a five yard warp, I’ve lost about 8” of total length
