Doggystyle and Cuban Linx made made me fall in love with hip hop. Before that I was listening to what my Mom listened to(Chaka Kahn, Anita Baker, Luther Vandross, etc.) I had the actual purple tape, I put clear scotch tape over the words so they wouldn’t smear off. I never heard anything like it and it confused me at first… by that 3rd listen I wanted a Hilfiger Shirt,a Helly Hansen Jacket and some Walabees…that’s another crazy thing about OB4CL…it influenced culture and style. N!gga I grew up in South Carolina and me and my friends were dressed like fly N!ggas from Staten Island. Wu Tang and later Kanye for better or worse raised me

Ice cream isn’t BIGGER than any song on Illmatic, but the albums are pretty neck and neck. But if I’m forced to pick one, I’d probably go with Rae cause the album is longer and still perfect. Also, the album is arguably the best produced ever, and certainly RZA’s best moment. Aquemini vs Cuban Linx? 🥶 too hard to call. It’s like splitting hairs tbh. Both on my top 10.

The Purple Tape kinda shifted NY hip hop in the 95 . Things was grimy before Rae and Ghost dropped. Illmatic was beautiful but grimy, Ready To Die is grimy mostly . Now notice the street aesthetic and presentation of the albums by the aforementioned, It Was Written is a suddenly mafioso alias drug-caper narratives are reflective of what albums ? Life After Death, with the Frank White alias, and the several drug caper stories , Spanish drug connect talk, all this is Purple Tape influenced . Suddenly a whole slew of street rappers from NY are mafioso alias or twists on real or fictional notorious figures Capone N Noriega and several other examples.

@@ZYaKnoe249I agree the first half is better but the second isn’t far off. And you know what Ice Cream has to match up with… Shook Ones and Ice Cream isn’t winning that. Drink Away The Pain beats Spot Rusherz and Cradle To The Grave and Wisdom Body is a toss up as they’re probably the weakest two from their respective albums. The first half is a problem though. Start of Your Ending is beating Knuckleheadz, Survival of the Fittest is beating Knowledge God, Eye For An Eye is beating Criminology, Incarcerated Scarface beats the Interlude which is a give me, Give Up The Goods is beating Rainy Dayz, Guillotine wins against Temperature’s Rising, Up North Trip beats Can It Be Remix and then Cuban Linx goes on its run winning with Ice Water, Glaciers of Ice and Verbal Intercourse against Trife Life, QU Hectic and Right Back At You. Cuban Linx also gets 3 at the end with Gambinios beating Party Over and getting +2 for Heaven and Hell and North Star not having match ups. Anyway you look at it, those albums are pretty damn even based on how you slice some of those match ups.

Plus songs like She Watch Channel Zero etc. The discordant pause tape production resonates with me I guess, lol. I will say that as a kid the videos to Fight The Power and Brothers Gonna Work it Out changed me and taught me more about Black history and the Black struggle than what I was learning in elementary school. I'm not sure how you can scoff at the idea of The Infamous being on par with or better than the Purple Tape, but suggest that It Takes A Nation is a close contender for the greatest album. Chuck D and Flava Flav ain't rappin' like Wu or Mobb--if lyrics are that important to you. Yes it's 88 vs. 95, but guess what Chuck D and Flav in 1995 sound like they did in 88. Personally, I have all 3 albums in my top 10, but will admit I have the Infamous higher than both. The Infamous is a top 3 album for me along with Illmatic and Midnight Marauders. I love the evil, grimey sound of the Infamous + Havoc was working with Tip, even on the tracks that Tip didn't produce you can hear the influence of Q-tip on those drums. There is very little difference between albums in my top 10 I think they are all pretty awesome. I don't have a set ranking and go back and forth on where exactly I should place them, but my list would be something akin to the following: 1. A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders, 2. Mobb Deep - The Infamous, 3. Illmatic, 4. Common - Be, 5. The Roots - Illadelphalflife, 6. GZA - Liquid Swords, 7. Raekwon - OB4CL, 8. Mobb Deep - Hell on Earth, 9. Slum Village - Fantastic Vol. 2, 10 PE - It Takes a Nation. Clearly I think very highly of prime Q-Tip, Havoc and RZA production and fucks with Dilla.

The verse on Apostle's Warning is one of my favorites in hip-hop history. Havoc starts that shit off and P bodies it for a couple of minutes with the snake/leadership references sprinkled throughout. That's a banger too. Prime Mobb is some of the best music ever created. Incredible sample flips for the time, banging beats and bars.

Ice Cream was a bigger "hit" than anything on Illmatic, guys . In '95 that song was regularly on the radio rotation and I'm from Philly . Illmatic had no radio rotation, It Ain't Hard to Tell only played in mix shows. The video got burn more the single . Also, as far as street approved Incarcerated Scarfaces dominated as far as defining tracks of the year, with the likes of O.C's Time's Up, Shook Ones pt 2, etc . I like you fellas and will give you a pass because of your ages...Respectfully you are wrong!!! I'm a Nas fan and a Wu-Tang fan and came up in the '90's but to say Illmatic & OB4CL is #1 & #2 can definitely raise an objection.... Paid in Full is the standard. I'd also argue The Chronic and Criminal Minded. The records from those albums completely changed EVERYTHING until this current day. Those albums named are also timeless as your two choices. Those records are being played more now than the other 2 in the streets of Philly and I believe that Wu & Nas work is of that high standard. You can argue top 5 or 10, but that Paid in Full movement is still full steam ahead. Peace to Eric B. & Rakim. Oh and by the way, ICE CREAM was a street banger in 1995 and the Wu was promoting skills and true hip-hop and not the flashy watered beats. Ice Cream and was a hit, we don't care about Billboard numbers. Those are masterful albums that the Source magazine f'd up and gave them 4.5 and later went back to give them their props. Criminal Minded and Paid in Full and The Chronic still bang in the streets. The other 2 do as well and they are both masterpiece albums, but the other 3 are very strong.
