Only Built 4 Cuban Linx: The Legend Of The Purple Tape
The year is 1995 and Raekwon is gearing up to drop his debut studio album. Upon dropping an album he would be the third member of the wu-tang clan to drop a solo album after the group’s debut album. Method Man had the first solo album out of the group with him dropping “TICAL” in November of 1994. ODB would be the second one with him dropping “Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version” in March of 1995.
This left some pressure for Raekwon to be the third one to release an album, especially with the standards of being a wu-tang clan member being so high and how monstrous the group’s debut album ended up being.

This album is intoxicatingly addictive. Hearing the beat to Ice Water drop for the first time is something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Once you settle into it, it sweeps you away and always leads you on an unbelievable ride. The highs, the lows, the everything in between this album depicts emotionally… genius stuff. Easily my favorite solo album of the Wu. 100/10.

By the time the Ice Cream single came out on Rap City I already had been rocking the Album. I loved the Ghostface Chef duo. Rae is my favorite MC period. After that, I bought the ODB album which is a classic and I bought Ready to Die. The South was late on the WuTang and Biggie by the time people start feeling them I already had those CDs. I didn’t like the booty bounce crap that South did and I am extremely thankful for the Geto Boys and eventually OutKast: But it’s was the Chef that held it down until the rap world start respecting the South. Thanks for the memories.
Those skits, intro, n outro is what made the tape so dope! And that's why even when Pt. 2 dropped years n years later when it was a Lil Wayne era I copped that!

My favorite album of all time. People forget how influential it was. From the Mafioso themes to the vocal heavy samples like ice water. The album continues to influence and should be recognized as such. Flawless.
The Guillotine Swordz beat came from the intro to Tical as well
Back in Alabama This kid in my school just gave me Raekwon’s Built for only Cuban Links CD back in the 96. He didn’t like it and I didn’t have a lot of CDs at the time. Another friend gave me Spice 1’s 187 He Wrote. I had two classic East and West Coast albums just given to me because they didn’t get it.I had to buy them both multiple times since then (CDs scratches from playing them so much).
This albums is absolutely flawless. Ice cream is stil one of my all time favorite beats . I remember getting all the Wu albums the day they came out but this one just hit different.
I was walking around high school with my little radio rocking “the purple tape!” At that time there was only two tapes the differed from the standard black or white, Redman had a red tape and Rae had the purple one….this was so fucking dope at the time. Even though all the songs was 🔥, I used to have incarcerated Scarface’s, verbal intercourse heaven and hell and wu gambling’s on repeat !!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

My favorite album of all time. Bought it in London when it dropped. Had heaven and hell on the fresh soundtrack then heard glaciers and criminology on Tim Westwood. Bought the tape then me and my cousin went to another store and I saw the CD had one extra song so I gave my cousin the tape and bought the CD on the spot. When I played it I could not believe how crazy it was. The beats and rhymes had me in a coma. Nas BODIED his feature too so hearing him was dope on there. Ice water was the song that shook my soul. The vocal loop fucked me up intensely. Rainy Dayz was a highlight too because of how operatic it was. I remember the review in HHC ended with them the album was so good it's scary. When I heard it I knew what they meant. Plus when I finally saw the movie the killer it made this album resonate even heavier seeing how rza based it around that movie. Thanks for this video. Really like the breakdown you gave this masterpiece.

As a 17 y.o. St. Louis native in '95, ODB's first album welcomed me through the doors of WU. But it was CUBAN LINX that fed me the food. It let me know what Wu-Tang was really about. And I had been feeding on their classics since then.
The Wu albums dropped when I was in highschool and basically defined my childhood. The purple tape being my favorite. Gritty artistic aspirational yet grounded in reality and sonically unlike anything before. A true classic. Great video my brother
This is def one of my fav albums and it was actually the first album that I got on CD (along with The Blueprint by Jay-Z). Amazing album and even tho I wasn't around in '95, this album is still somewhat nostalgic to me since I remember listening to it while riding my bike on the way to a summer job a few years back. Even this last summer I had it on heavy rotation. Idk why I always associated this album with the summer but yeah. I mean, it kinda makes sense if you look it from the perspective of OB4CL as the summer Wu album while Liquid Swords is the winter Wu album Great video as usual and I appreciate this "remaster" of your original video on this album
