Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan Tells His Life Story (Full Interview) (Full Interview)

Ойын-сауық

Raekwon came through for his first VladTV interview in some years, and he started out by speaking about his new book, “From Staircase to Stage: The Story of Raekwon and the Wu-Tang Clan,” which he pointed out is from the Wu-Tang song, “Incarcerated Surfaces.” From there, Raekwon began telling his life story, including growing up in Brownsville in the 1980s, his dad being in the streets, and witnessing violence at a young age. Raekwon then detailed how Wu-Tang was formed and how they later signed a deal with Loud Records, which also included solo deals for the members. He also spoke about how the family dynamic of the group began to change when Wu-Tang began working on their second album, which Raekwon says he opens up more about in his book. To hear more, including Raekwon speaking about the Wu-Tang series on Hulu and possible movie projects in the future, hit the full interview above.

I was actually in HDM in Rikers Island when the wu performed, it was fire, 1996,,all of them were there, ghost was the only one wearing a big gold chain , Rae had a Cuban on but it was tucked under his shirt, I remember saying he’s short in real life, I just thought that because he was my height, lol, but his vocal skills is crazy, he’s right everyone was on there best behavior because HDM was gladiator school at that time , people were getting cut and stabbed everyday, but no one wanted to fuck up the Wu performing, dirty bastard came over from the shock program , he was on a parole violation, I remember he performed a song he said he was coming out with but it never came out, the song went (put it in there butts…) lol.. referring to females, the female guards were tight at that song, they performed every song, I remember when they finished Rae Kwon passed right by me grilling everybody, I remember laughing to myself, I guess he wanted to show he was hard amongst criminals. Some guy next to me threw a t-shirt at him for his autograph, he signed it, dam that brings back memories, glad he still here because the 90’s in NYC was a war zone… I changed my life around and never looked back.

I was born in East New York Brooklyn and raised on Staten Island. When we moved from BK we moved to Park Hill, when the apartments were brand new. Many of the cats that Rae is talking about I grew up with them, C-Allah, the original knuckle game champ from Stapelton Billy Johnson(R.I.P) We moved to Mariners Harbor(Jungle Nilz) where the original emcees from Staten Island(Force MC'S) put our borough on the map in the late 70's, early 80's. The Force MC's later became the Force MD's, they're the true pioneers of hip-hop and R&B. Every project on the Isle had brothers that would fight each other all the time, I wasn't a street dude, but I was raised amongst the Thugs. Rest in peace to Mike and Barry Blue, K-Born, Lord Justice, Quadon, and many other brothers that didn't have the opportunity to grow old. Much respect to our borough, Staten Island aka the Isle of Stat, Shaolin.

The lyrical contributions Rae and Ghost contributed to Hip Hop music STILL to this day (in my opinion) are not and have not been acknowledged or celebrated to the levels they deserve ! These guys came in with something that sounded like nothing you had EVER heard before And they didn't ask a single question in the process THIS shit is fly and we don't even care if you know it or not because WE know it! Which is in truth and in fact the very essence of Hip Hop music !

Imo Ghost influenced the whole "alternative" rap genre. Mack Miller, Action Bronson, Tyler The Creator etc... Ghost was one of the first with the flow where the words didn't actually matter, he experimented with rap song structure in way nobody else was doing. He don't get enough credit for that fr. No disrespect to Rae, he def the better rapper but Ghost's creativity is just unmatched.

What a dope interview. You can tell Raekwon is solid! It's refreshing to see his brand of authenticity and principle. A lot of wisdom in this interview, especially what he said about rza being a better manager of his emotions when compared to the rest of the guys. That line explains so much.

Salute to the whole Clan to be able to speak openly, especially to one another. Not many crews can be honest with each other and it not be a total wrestle mania.✌🏾

Man I’m about 2/3 of the way through “From Staircase To Stage” and damn it’s good. I’m a big Wu fan since I was a kid but even leaving that aside, it was really well written and gives a dope insight into the early days of the Wu, their upbringing, getting signed, touring, recording classic albums, etc. Such a good read.

I think RZA was right as far as the movie vs tv series thing. There’s no way you can tell the story of Wu Tang the right way in a 2-3 hour movie. The series allowed RZA to go in depth with all 9 members and their respective stories.

What's iconic is that throughout this whole interview his cadence matches how he shows up on record. Now I realize that he was the guiding force of 36 Chambers--besides RZA's work.Raekwon wove the album together via skit.
