Converting From Vacuum Fuel Pump And Petcock To Manual Petcock | Bobber Build | How To

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How to bypass and convert the vacuum fuel pump and petcock on your virago xv250 vstar to a manual petcock shut off, this is a simple and easy to do it yourself mod so if you are tired of that old vacuum fuel pump and wore out vacuum petcock and searching for info on how to get rid of them for a more cleaner looking bike or a less troublesome repair than a costly vacuum pump then this video is for you. so lets add a new video to this bobber build series!!
Disclaimer: Seems some people may half to ajust their carb float with this mod and idle air mixture then some dont, but some have said it acts like it's running out of fuel and they fixed it this way, comments below, my bike never did , but as with any and all mod's test and make sure they in working order and safe.
Please drop a like and comment if you find this video helpful
How the xv250s petcocks work, they are vacuum operated petcocks. This means that they have a little diaphragm and valve set-up in them which responds to engine vacuum and allows fuel to flow only when the engine is running and supplying vacuum. This is how things work when the petcock lever is set to the “on” or “run” setting. So we see that the “on” setting is actually the “off” setting when the engine is not running. So if the engine quits for any reason (as in a “lay down” situation), the petcock(s) will automatically close and prevent the fuel from flowing out.
These petcocks also have two other lever settings:
The “prime” setting bypasses the vacuum function and allows fuel to flow at all times, even when the engine is stopped. The purpose of this setting is to allow the carb float bowls to be filled when the engine is not running. Note that if you run your petcock(s) on the prime setting all the time, you lose the safety feature provided by the vacuum petcock. Note also that on this setting, fuel is prevented from flowing out through the carbs, into cylinders, etc.) only by the float valves in the carbs, which close when the carbs are full. Should one of these float valves stick open or leak, you then get flooding through that carb.
The “reserve” setting is used to access an additional amount of fuel when you start to run out. Here is how this works. These petcocks have inlet towers which stick up into the tank. In the “on” position, fuel flows down to the petcock through an opening high on the tower. So when you “run out of fuel” you actually have some more fuel sitting in the bottom of the tank which lies below this high inlet. When you turn the petcock lever to “reserve”, a lower inlet near the bottom of the tower opens, so you can gain access to this last bit of fuel in your tank.

Note to those who are thinking to do this mod: You may need to adjust your carb float to allow more fuel into the carburetor, after performing this mod. If you don't the engine will bog and run lean. Simply set the float to allow more fuel into the carb; and, then, readjust your fuel mixture screw, and lastly your idle screw, to make the engine run just right.

@@stevegoulet5499 Yes, mine is running perfect. Note, I had to set the float a lot higher than spec, to allow enough fuel into the bowl. My motorcycle runs like a charm. I have run about three full tanks of gas through the engine since I did this mod. So I know for sure it's all good. Note, whenever you undo the fuel lines to do a mod like this, try to bleed the air from the system. I'm referring to the part of his video where he wanted to undo that screw, after the mod was completed, but then changed his mind because the screw was too tight. That screw is to drain the fuel bowl. The reason he was going to open the screw was to allow air to escape the system, as the fuel comes in. I hope you understand what I'm saying. TattsForLife was able to get by because he couldn't get the screw loose without risking stripping it; but it must have been difficult to crank and not run very well until that air got out of the system. Let me know how it goes...

@@BEEBEE159 awesome Thank you, I ended up putting in a after market fuel pump with a fuse and relay and that did not solve the problem, my floats are adjusted so that the "U" on the float is just touching the line of the bottom of the circle that is etched onto the circuit housing (if that makes sense) I will try to bend float clips to allow more gas in like you suggested. @@TattsForLife I did mine exactly like you did. I used the same exact hose that you used, and I did not install a fuel filter, which you didn't either. Those people that did not have success either installed a fuel filter or used a hose that is too long and straight. This will inhibit flow enough to cause a problem. I've gone on the highway, and there was no problem at all. I also rode with the tank near empty, on reserve; and that wasn't a problem, either.

Steven, did you ever figure out what your issue was bc I'm having similar issues but I think my fuel pump (vacuum operated) may or may not be faulty. I had an inline fuel filter placed just after this pump going to the carb and fuel is getting through but is not reaching the carb like there's not enough pressure pushing my fuel which makes me believe I have compression issues. Brand New carb. Having troubles with bringing down the top carb joint boot to top the carb. It seems to be stuck from back pressure unless I engage the throttle to the wide open position; then Im able to adjust it downward but it still leaves about a 1/8 gap between the bottom of the carb and the top of the intake boot, which I have tried to compensate for with clamps and duct tape. Still not turning over. Fuel or compression is the ❓

HEADS UP! You can change to the old-style petcock. But if you go without the fuel pump the bike won't run right. Won't keep the carb bowl full and you will have serious trouble. At higher speeds, it will perform like it is running out of gas and you will end up having a vehicle run you over. Keep the stock fuel pump. Tried it. SUCKS Trying to install an electric fuel pump will take so much to install and without a regulator will likely make fuel come out of the overflow and may even with a regulator. Plus there is no proper space on the bike to mount it or them. I did it with just replacing the petcock and keeping the fuel pump and it runs great and a lot less hose. It looks much cleaner. less to go wrong. Easier to work on. Change your gearing to 17 teeth on front 42 on the back if you're under 160lbs. Great cruising speeds. Great bike for the small (under 5'8" rider. Enjoy.

I know this is a relative old thread but here goes nothing. I have a 2009 V Star 250 that the carb kept running out of gas probably cause of my 250lb big butt. Vacuum pump couldn't keep up so my fix was to get rid of both the petcock and the vacuum fuel pump. I used a petcock for a V Star 650 and an electric pump for a Kawasaki Mule that has about 2psi. It's a pulse pump that once it reaches it's pressure it drops down to an occasional bump to keep up and will stop pumping if the engine doesn't need the fuel like when idling. I'm 71 and a 250 is all I really need. I got both from amazon for $33 that's for both. Petcock was $9 and the pump was $23.64. Draws 1 amp and holds at 2psi.

I made this mod out of necessity, if you have problems with the bike seeming to run out of gas it shuts down at high revs you feel explosions and jerks. First you should go to refill your gas tank, then retest it and if you don't notice any changes adjust the fuel hose. I put it lying on the carburetor on the part of the throttle cable. I did not have to cut the carburetor fuel inlet tube. And for now it's fine but I wouldn't leave it fixed and it's impossible to put a fuel filter on it. What I'm going to do is buy the original pump and connect it with this new Petcock. Although I also have an electric pump but for some reason it doesn't work. This direct mod is good as a second option if your pump or Petcock fails on the road. I recommend looking for the Petcock at a local store in your country. I found one just like it for $3.50 dólar, 34mm measure between screws and maybe vary a little the size of the connectors but it works.

Manual fuel valves certainly deliver enough fuel for larger engines and were standard before the vacuum abortions were imagined. Note, I am running the OEM jetts, and they were clogged. So now that the jetts are cleaned out, the fuel supply cannot keep up. I suspect that this problem can be fixed by adjusting the float height. TattsForLife so I got it done... but now it seems like just over halfway through each gear it kind of maxes out on the throttle so you have to shift a lot sooner than normal. I’m thinking since the new petcock isn’t much lower than the carb inlet it’s just not getting enough fuel for the higher demand required at the top part of each gear. I also didn’t cut off the 90 degree turn on the carb inlet, so it is rerouted around the front of the front cylinder (which would probably cause it to lose some pressure). Any thoughts?

@@mattbrown8931 it works on gravely, so yes flue line routing will have alot to do with it, if you ruuning your fuel bowl dry, I really never had any loss of power or gear shifting when I done mine, you sure you just not being paranoid lol as shifting as alot to do with gearing and nothing do with fuel lol

A sr500 them are cool bikes, single piston I think, cafe racer style, I always wanted one to make a cafe racer out of, but I think the way the tank sets on the bike that it don't gravity feed to well, but one of the common fix's on the xv250 like in video is moving the fuel float level to allow more fuel into the carb, you can also have a new custom fuel bowl made for the bike by buying a old fuel bowl and having it lengthen just a tad it dont take much, the stalling is it running out of fuel, also make sure your vent tube is not stopped up and if running a fuel filter it flows good
