Wow, I had no idea what I was getting into with this part of the build. Just getting the engine ready for removal was a beast. Getting the engine out of the frame was a major beast. Prepping it took 7 hours which bled into the next day...which was raining. But the end result is awesome...a nice satin black finish. Good as new.
Come back next Tuesday where we take the rolling frame into the metal fabrication shop for some serious custom rear end customization.

This restoration/customizing stuff is awesome man. Dude I swear, every time I work on a bike of mine and start painting something I've removed it gives me the same satisfied feeling that I used to feel so often composing music & producing. It's so great breaking everything apart and having your way with it as an artist and then once it's done you can stand back....look and listen to the creation like, "Yeah I did That!" ....idk

I personally take the screws out before painting. I do not like the looks of screws painted to the parts and also if you have to take them out ever in the future you ruin the whole paint! Same goes for all the places the parts join. I either paint them seperately or mask the joining line off. Only exeption is the cylinder head.

Only problem I see not painting parts separately is that when you take them off, covers, cylinder heads, etc. It'll mess up the finish when the seam is broken. Maybe not. I'd like to do a black base, with red accents.

Anyone have any advice/guidance/info about how clean your motor really needs to be before primer and paint? I have an ‘81 CB750 that I’m doing a brat/cafe build out of and it probably hasn’t been washed in 40 years. I’m going over it with a mixture of dawn and simple green cleaner degreaser and using anything at my disposal to get to as much of it as possible. If a little bit of dirt and grease is let behind here and there, will that hurt it? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Ive got a honda rebel 450 engine I just prepped today. Im kind of anal about my shit, so I went to harbor freight and got a soda blaster and some of their fine grit soda and blasted the grime off it. get the cheap $30 one, it works just fine so long as you have at least a 1 horse compressor. Like yours, previous owner neglected it and probably never washed it, and it came out beautiful. Only took about 2 hrs and i was able to get every nook and cranny clean of debris. just make sure to plug every in/outlet before doing this, and once done just hose er off and blow the water off with compressed air. hope this helps!
